Sonic 4: Episode 2 Screens & Media Topic

Story-wise? What the fuck is happening story-wise?

All I'm seeing is "UH OH SPAGHETTIOS SONIC EGGMAN BE TAKIN' DEM ROBATS FROM DUH OLD GAYMS AND MAKIN' 'EM ROBAT HARDER DIS TIEM. GO GET 'EM TIGUR1", and that applies to both episodes.

Hell, Episode 1's official description lists it as exactly that; Eggman remaking old machines and stirring trouble again. Episode 2? He brought back Metal Sonic and that other thing. There's literally nothing more to it.

What's to theorize about?

Well

there's the fact that Little Planet is still Death Egg.

Actually, I'll be totally honest and and say I forgot about Little Planet being part of the story until the the cutscene before the final stage. The story in this game is so not there it doesn't matter. Kinda of lame they'd bring back Little Planet to serve such 'little' purpose. S4 is over though. Let it be over, SEGA. Have Sonic Team make Sonic 5 as a full retail title instead. Make Sonic 5 the true Sonic 4.

Man, it would be awesome if Sonic Team made Episode 3 themselves...

I'll actually disagree with you on that. Sonic 4 is what it is. It'd be weird and kind of a waste to have Sonic Team come in at the 11th Hour to make some good levels that just won't fit with the rest of Sonic 4. Let DIMPS finish up the S4 series, and let Sonic Team get started on their own Sonic 5.

Or maybe on a retail version of Sonic 4 all together with something extra and different stuff in the levels. The possibilities are many but i can see not even one happening

Sonic 4 story in a nutshell:

Episode I, from Sonic's point of view, is exactly as the game originally advertised it. Eggman's just looking to defeat Sonic with everything his tight-budgeted army can muster. From Eggman's (Episode Metal) point of view though...

Eggman built Mad Gear Zone as a giant factory to recharge and improve upon Metal Sonic's abilities. I'm also guessing that it was an obstacle course to test his abilities since Metal Sonic willingly goes through the mazes and death traps.

Eggman was snooping as usual when he came across Lost Labyrinth and found that somewhere in there was a secret source of powerful energy. Eggman's "research" amounts to digging through the mines to find this powerful orb, which Metal Sonic absorbs to increase his power and resilience even further than before.

Casino Street was obviously an exploit to get more funds.

It turns out that the purpose for Mad Gear and Lost Labyrinth were to revive and overclock Metal Sonic when Little Planet returns as a safety measure for Eggman to encase the Little Planet inside of his newly created Death Egg mk.II, as seen in Episode II, and I imagine the purpose of Oil Desert was to rig some petroleum to help build the thing, but that isn't really official information.

It's interesting to note that the Death Egg mk.II is powered by purple energy, the same color as the hidden power that he gave to Metal Sonic. Is it possible that Eggman mined more of this during the events of Episode I in preparation for the new Death Egg (since the Master Emerald was a lost cause at this point) unbeknownst to Sonic or even Metal Sonic? It's also worth noting that the Death Egg mk.II never actually explodes outright, but rather lays dormant and powered off, opening up 2 possibilities:

1) The Death Egg mk.II stays there until Episode III, where it'll finally be destroyed, or...

2) It teleports along with the Little Planet, and will make a comeback in a future Sonic game unrelated to Sonic 4.

I dunno about you, but I'm liking this so far.

I think it would have been better to have little planet-death egg as an entire episode (i.e. episode 3). After all Sonic CD was an entire game based soley on little planet.

Also I think Death Egg Mkii in Ep2 should of had at least four acts like a normal Sonic 4 zone. Death Egg is supposed to be epic like in S3&K and seems too short in Ep2.

I know you guys are going to hate me for this, but leaked assets include art ripped from the game. Do not post them.

Ripped assets are going to be fair game after release though, right?

Yes, it's fair game after. We're being really strict on this right now due to Sega's embargo on info until the release date.

...I'm sorta liking the idea of the sequel being an all-new Sonic game after what you've said there. Not that I would mind an Episode 3 (I'd love one very much), but that would make for an epic saga!

Something's telling me that in the full game when you get all of the Chaos Emeralds and/or Red rings the will Death Egg mk.II blow up. Just an assumption, considering they didn't make a difference in the beta.

So, has anyone just stood around for a minute yet? The idle animations...

ARE SO CUUUUUTE. Q_Q Tails curls up like a cat and sleeps with lil' ear flicks and everything.

I love Tails' derpy look up animation too, and the special stage failure animations are some of the nicest facial/body-language animations they've done with the pair.

You know I'd be okay with mute cut-scenes in games if they are all this lovingly animated. Generations was pretty great but Classic Sonic was never animated this expressive.

Yes, but we won't. Out of respect to SEGA, assets from this leak (be music, screenshots, videos and ripped data) are not allowed to be posted on this forum.

I understand... Well, I guess I'll really have to wait for the final release in mid-May...

Yes, and we're still not supposed to be posting these things.

Anyway, with the "To be continued", pretty much confirming the story will continue, I've had an idea.

Well, first the team gimmick would have to be changed from forced to a bonus when selecting Sonic & Tails or any other pairing. Second, Knuckles would have to be in.

Now, I'd love for the final Zone to be the Death Egg again with the three of them splitting up and having their own little mission à la Cannon's Core (Except you only go through their stage if your playing their adventure). Like Tails shuts some shields down, Knuckles goes and destroys the core or something and Sonic goes after Eggman. It's nothing big, but I think it would be cool and give the different characters different levels.

That's really cool. I'd love to see that.

I was thinking how they will adapt the co-op if and when Ep 3 comes. We'll have Tails and Knuckles behind us? or maybe they'll go the classic route and Eggman make Knuckles go against Sonic and Tails again because he blackmailed him with the Emerald and have him later on with us. Put a proper char selection so you can play with Tails and Knuckles alone. Maybe have Eggman abduct Tails and you go Sonic & Knukcles to save him. That would be pretty cool i think.

In any case that's an idea i had really quick. On the other hand i finished Ep 2. pretty awesome. I am really excited to play the PS3 ver. on my big HDTV since my laptop can only handle basic stuff.

All the Red Rings are relatively easy to find. They're on the more difficult paths, but not the hidden paths. It's a shame, there are some great hidings spots in some of the levels that go unused.
