Hogfather draws parallels with Sonic and the Bible.

Right let’s lay down some notes before I begin...

  • I am not saying Sonic Team copied the bible.
  • Jesus is not Sonic.
  • Anyone who hasn’t studied an academic subject at a college level (UK education since I don’t know what the US levels are) may not understand this, but those in their last two years of secondary school education may understand what I’m on about (especially English students).
  • I am not 100% an expert on the history of the Christian faith so if something isn't 100% accurate get over it.

In many subjects (mainly English) when it comes to reading material you are asked to comment on parallels between what is written in the book and other previous material. And things like metaphors and similes come out of the text. This is also done with films as well. I'm sure many of you have heard about how Star Wars is a bit like the Christian faith (or have watched it and spotted some of the stuff).

Well I decided to look at a large chunk of the Sonic universe and tried to spot some parallels between Sonic and the events logged in the bible. I was surprised at some of the things I found. However as with any subject be it English/film/media its all your own interpretation and you can either go along with it or provide evidence to go against it. So as I've already said Sonic Team didn’t intentionally copy the bible (nor any religion) but there are some parallels that have unintentionally emerged (at least that I see.)

As many people say there are so many different Sonic universes they are all correct and as a few say they could be one single universe (although I don’t subscribe to that) so please keep that in mind when reading also before I begin I must stress that the main areas I've looked at are...

  1. Sega Sonic.
  2. Fleetway Comics.
  3. Sonic OVA.
  4. The Sonic Promo.

Also consider Archie, SatAM and Sonic X (but since I don’t know too much about them I haven’t used them much.)

So here we go.

At Jesus' time the people had to pay huge taxes on almost everything to tax collectors who were working for the Roman occupying force at the time, and because the emperor of Rome at the time was considered the ruler of the empire he was in effect the dictator of their state. However before Rome invaded the land the people lived in relative peace and didn’t have to pay such huge taxes and their freedoms were larger.

In Fleetway, Archie (I think), the Sonic promo and I can imagine if Sonic 1 had a story this is what would happen. Before Robotnik came along people on Mobius lived in peace and were free. However when Robotnik came along they lived under a dictatorship and had huge numbers of freedoms restricted.

During the time of Jesus he began his quest to help people alone but then formed a group of followers (the disciples) who would go around helping educate people in the ways of the lord and an ideal of how to live their lives despite their dictated rule.

In fleetway and I'm guessing Archie and Sega Sonic, Sonic began his quest to help people alone but then he formed the freedom fighters and their task was to help him in freeing the people of Mobius and teaching others how to live under Robotniks rule. But the main thing was their task was in effect to help people.

Just before Jesus was captured in the garden of Gethsemane it is said that the devil came before him and issued him a number of challenges. One such challenge was that Jesus found himself atop a huge mountain and overlooked the whole word, the devil stood beside him and said "bow down to me and all this shall be yours to control." However Jesus refused and cast the devil out of his sight.

This is a dodgy one for Sonic. It appeared in Fleetway Comics during the Robotnik reigns supreme saga, I imagine it’s been in Archie at some point and also in one of the cartoons also at some points. I don’t know if it was in one of the Sonic Adventures but I wouldn’t be surprised if it has or will soon appear. But anyway, In the fleetway comic strip Robotnik used the power of the chaos to have the powers of a God, in this strip near to its climax Robotnik challenges Sonic in a number of scenarios and finishes by asking him to be his right hand man and join him in ruling the world. However Sonic refuses and finds a way to defeat Robotnik. I think that something like this also appeared in Sonic X a number of times but I’m not sure about the games.

Before Jesus died he was a normal man, he was capable of being hurt and could die. However when he was crucified he ironically became immortal. The reason is that when most people die their teachings and their ideas stop. They cannot carry them on in any way. But when Jesus died he came back to life a few days later and his teachings are carried on even to this day (some 2000+ years later) So Jesus' idea of loving one another, denouncing evil and fighting the dark side lives on even today, since he is dead nobody can stop his voice from being spoken and his mission to fight the dark side and his teachings live on, and in effect are more powerful than before because he himself cannot be forced to stop.

Mainly for fleetway people but in the Sonic 360 demo you can say Sega sonic also have this... Sonic can be harmed in the games and is like any other living thing as we know (lose your rings, get hit again and you die.) However there is a version of sonic that is practically indestructible. In fleetway comics Super Sonic only ever appeared when Sonic was facing a near death experience. And in the Sonic 360 demo we see Sonic hit by a barrage of laser fire and just before the screen goes dark we see him fall over lifeless. (And if this was in a game and we took all that laser fire from a robot we'd get the game over screen) Then there is a bright light and Super Sonic rises. And as we all know Super Sonic is practically indestructible to any physical attack and cannot be stopped. Therefore in death Super Sonic can carry on the original mission of sonic, to help people, fight the dark side and teach others to fight it also, even though in effect Sonic is no more Super Sonic lives on and cannot be stopped by those who would be against Sonic originally.

In the bible there is a passage which is a reference to the anti Christ.

Quote

"Hereby know ye the spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh [of David's descendants] is not of God: and this is that spirit of Antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is in the world."
- (I John 4:2,3)

According to this website the antichrist is something who knows of the existence of Christ (Jesus) and was there at the same time as Jesus and is against his teachings but is aware of them and preach near to the opposite of them.

Now In Sega Sonic and the Sonic OVA there are 2 elements of an antichrist (or anti Sonic). The first is Metal Sonic. Metal Sonic is aware of Sonic and his mission to free Mobius. he is forged in Sonics image and has all of his abilities, however unlike Sonic his mission is the opposite to Sonics and will try to undermine Sonics actions for as long as Sonic lives until he is defeated and then his rule can dominate the land (as seen in heroes metal tries to take complete control).

Or another example would be Shadow. Shadow is in effect Sonics clone, however during Sonic Adventure 2 he is acting for the dark side and against Sonics mission to stop Robotnik, and because Shadow says that he is the true version and Sonic is the fake shadow becomes a form of anti Christ. However the problem with Shadow being the anti Christ in Sonics world is that he is a temporary anti Christ. At the end of the game he has no choice but to work with Sonic and in future games he will almost work with Sonic, which removes the anti Christ title.

This next one is a bit of a debatable one but its one none the less. In the Bible the devil was said to be originally a good angel. In Fact Lucifer as he was known was God's prize angel. He did nothing but good and was the iconic figure of Christianity. However God discovered that Lucifer was trying to gain more power that God has and this power ended up being Lucifer’s downfall. God cast him out of heaven and he became the evil twisted being known as the devil.

In Fleetway and the Sonic promo its said that Dr Kintobor was a kind and friendly scientist who did nothing but good for the people and everyone loved him even Sonic. However in the promo and fleetway Kintobor was conducting a lot of experiments and had an accident, which changed him into the evil and twisted devil like madman he is today. But what is significant with this to the bible story is that in Fleetway and various other sub stories e.g. the ladybird sonic storybook. The accident involved the chaos emeralds which in Sonics world are one of the most powerful sources of power and energy. It can therefore be theorised that Kintobor was experimenting with the power and like Lucifer this power was his downfall and the cause of him becoming evil.

I think I'll leave it there for now since this took me a long time to type and I would like people to see it. Now right now there is some fool out there reading this and thinking they will try and be funny and say something like "OMG LIKE Knuxs is Moses!!!" Or some crap. As I already said it’s all down to interpretation and if you can find some good examples to back up what you see then go for it.

And also like I've already said Sonic Team didn’t say, "Hey lets copy Christianity!" mainly because it’s likely Sonics creators were Buddhists. But then again Shakespeare didn’t write his plays to be scrutinised in classrooms throughout the world and for people to draw parallels with other things but yet any schoolboy and college guy and uni student usually ends up doing that.
