This week marks the release of Netflix' first "What We Watched" report, an effort to increase viewership transparency by publishing the total hours viewed of all series seasons and movies that passed 50,000 hours from January through June this year. As such, it's worth checking out how Sonic Prime did within Netflix' full slate of programs.
I hope you're ready to jump into The Number Zone!
The only true Netflix exclusive on the list, Sonic Prime, only has Season 1 stats available since Season 2 was released shortly after the June cutoff for this report. However, in these six months, Sonic Prime was watched across 82.1 million hours. This doesn't quite pit Prime against Netflix' most popular dramas and thrillers, but it confidently ranks the series at about 137 on the entire list of over 18,000 seasons and movies.
Sonic Boom isn't available on Netflix in every region, but its two seasons did quite respectably. Viewers watched a collective 27.8 million hours of Season 1, and 26.1 million hours of Season 2. Ranking in this list gets a little messy due to hours only incrementing by the hundred-thousand, but this puts Season 1 somewhere in the 710s, and Season 2 in the 790s.
Sonic X is available on a number of services, including all three dubbed seasons on YouTube at time of writing, but the first two are currently on Netflix and seem to be doing okay for a series that's now [checks calendar] 20 years old. Season 1 was watched for 9.5 million hours (ranking in the 2100s), and Season 2 for 3.7 million hours (ranking in the 4200s or 4300s).
Bringing up the animated tail(s) is the DiC classic Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (which is also officially on YouTube), though oddly enough, only 20 episodes of the 60+ episode series are available on Netflix. Yet despite the limited run, this so-called Season 1 still racked up 1.5 million hours, ranking somewhere between the 6600s and 6800s.
Aaaaaaand finally, Paramount's Sonic series did appear on Netflix with limited availability in certain times and territories, and were each watched enough to chart. Sonic 1 got 300,000 hours, and Sonic 2 doubled it in every sense with 600,000.
If you'd like to peruse the entire list to take in the stats or compare other series, Netflix has made the full spreadsheet available here to download.
