  • Sonic Superstars Places 9th in Circana US Sales Charts

Sonic Superstars Debuts in the top 10.

Sonic Superstars managed to land the 9th spot in Circana's sales charts, which tracks US video game sales. The Circana charts are released monthly by Mat Piscatella, Circana's executive director and video game analyst, via his Twitter account. For any old farts who don't know, Circana is just a new name for the NPD Group, which has been tracking video game sales in the US for decades.

Circana doesn't provide sales numbers, but this at least confirms that Sonic Superstars sold well enough to chart in the top 10. For comparison's sake, last year's Sonic Frontiers charted in the fourth spot when it launched. The chart counts both physical and digital sales, and ranks them by dollar sales rather than units sold. This does technically give $70 games like Spider-Man 2, Madden NFL 24, Mortal Kombat 1, and NHL 24 an edge over $60 games like Super Mario Wonder and, of course, Sonic Superstars.

You can check out the full chart below:

We'll be reporting on Sonic Superstars' sales journey in the Circana chart for as long as it tracks. The November 2023 chart will release on December 13.

Be interesting to see if it does. I was really hyped for Superstars, but im suprised as on "OG since '91" fan that its not as enjoyable as frontiers. Its solid, really good in parts but im not in a hurry to go back to it in the same way as frontiers. A few QOL improvements would help with it, but lets see. I hope it does hold on...but lets see

That's a solid result. We'll see how people play ball with it once Sega initiates price slashes for it, which should be happening in a week or so if the timing is the same as usual. #9 with full price for such a game is a good sign in user engagement. I have my doubts about it having the same staying power as Frontiers, but it should still be plenty of financial incentive for Sega to keep greenlighting future 2D games. Especially if they're made on the cheap like Superstars seemingly was.

Happy to see Sonic Superstars be in the top 10 though it does deserve to be a bit higher. As a Venom fan (particularly of the comics/source material, unlike what most adaptions portray the character as Venom in the original material is more like Shadow than Surge or Metal Sonic) I'm not so happy about Spider-Man 2 getting number 1 since the adaption was horrible.

Hopes for an (improved) sequel seem be doing well at this point!

Oooh yes!  I do hope that if they get a sequel, the gameplay mechanics will improve a bit.

And if they do a sequel, they'll have an excuse to use Bean and Bark again... right?

C'mon, Sega, throw me a bone. I mean, sure I'll take another new character if they're good, or some more character development for Trip, but I really want my bird and bear boys back in the spotlight. Team Hooligan must rise again!
