  • Sonic Dream Team Likely to Remain Exclusive to Apple Arcade

    If you want to play SEGA HARDlight's next Sonic game, you'll need an Apple device.

    Sonic's upcoming Apple Arcade adventure, Sonic Dream Team, is likely to remain exclusive to Apple's service for the foreseeable future. Sonic Stadium was able to confirm this via a source involved in the game's production that has asked us to keep them anonymous, but we were able to confirm that they are indeed involved in the game's production.

    While Apple Arcade exclusives have gone multiplatform in the past, our source told us that this would be unlikely for Dream Team, due to the nature of the game's production. Specifically: Apple was involved in the game's production. Our source was not able to confirm anything beyond this, but this almost certainly means Apple has some sort of financial investment in the game at the very least.

    This means that, much like HARDlight's previous Apple Arcade efforts, Chu Chu Rocket Universe and Sonic Racing, Sonic Dream Team almost certainly isn't going anywhere else any time soon. Apple Arcade is available on iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs and Macs, all of which Sonic Dream Team has been confirmed for.

    Sonic Dream Team will be coming out December 5.

    Guess I'll just copy/paste my response from the last topic.

    As others here have said, kind of expected. Still, amazing that "Apple Arcade Exclusive" managed to trend today and the overwhelming response I've seen has been "That looks so cool, I'll never play it though!".

    I'm sure Sega will make money off it, but it's not exactly a stellar reception for either Sega or Apple. Just hope if the actual product is good that Hardlight gets the opportunity to make something that everyone can play.

    Basically, Apple helped finance the game, if I'm understanding that correctly? 

    So, if you have the money to make it, you can negotiate to keep it exclusive. Makes sense given that Paramount did the same with the Sonic movies it seems.

    Although I might have that all jumbled up, so feel free to correct me on any errors and mess ups.

    I mean, I'm not exactly going to complain that a game commissioned by Apple is exclusive to them. It's just, I'll never play it, and I guess Sonic Team will have to be ok with that.

    That's totally understandable from Apple that they Invested Sonic Dream Team and the Involvement as well like the production and that's why It's exclusive to Apple on there platform and won't see It on any other gaming platforms.

    Although It wouldn't be nice to see It on other platforms to like Android because I'm Android user myself.

    Oh well...i'll chalk this one up as "one for the future" along with Lost World and Rise of Lyric when they co.e on the emulators

    Yeah, but you don't need a special proprietary Paramount machine to play the Sonic movies.

    Can't Apple just... like... release their service on Windows or something, like they do with iTunes? People would pay for it, they'd make money! Bah.

    From one of the latest topics, I'm hearing it might be possible for a Console/PC release. So maybe?

Now I have no idea how it is over there at Hardlight, so I won't say they're straight up lying, but where I work, brand ambassadors don't really know how everything works behind the scenes.

    What I'm saying is that this comment should be taken as a grain of salt or at least shouldn't be interpreted as "we're working on a console/PC version" until it's officially confirmed by either devs or said brand ambassador.

    Actually, not "whoops"? I like SonicWindBlue but they are not saying anything of value to actually debunk anything here, it just reads like standard company ambassador-level damage control.

    Unless SWB is confirming there will be a console/PC port of Sonic Dream Team at some point down the line. Which, given SEGA HARDlight is a mobile game developer and has not had any of their games ported to console/PC before, isn't much of a 'gotcha' for this story (the assumed exclusivity is for mobile devices).

    And if I was HARDlight I'm not sure I'd want my company ambassador hinting at stuff like that before such a project was officially announced (do they want to ruin a possible business relationship with Apple by announcing console/PC versions before the Apple Arcade version has even been released?).

    So either SWB has something to announce or they don't. And if they don't, their tweet is a nothingburger.

    This game will be playable on Apple Silicon Macs as well so wouldn’t Apple want to block the PC release as well?

    Well... That's unfortunate.

    And I'm not gonna buy a brand new machine just to play one game. I don't even do that for Mario.

    Personally, I think this will eventually get a release on console, though that might not happen until late next year. I think they don't want this competing with Sonic Superstars for the time being, as the game came out not even a month ago. Once Superstars has had it's time being the focus, maybe we'll see some confirmation of a port of this game, as it seems a waste to have a 3D Sonic game be relegated to only Apple devices, even if it is smaller in scope.

    If this is also releasing on MacOS,  then the only choice someone on Windows could possibly play the game is through some sort of virtual machine lile VirtualBox or VMware, but regardless of that, this sucks! And the possibility of it not releasing anywhere else and staying on Apple products for the rest of time sucks even more!

    If Sayonara Wild Hearts didn't stay an Apple Exclusive then neither will Sonic Dream Team.

    I'm calling this one bunk. Just give it some months-a year or two.

    The only thing giving me pause on that is the fact that HARDlight is a mobile game studio. Their games have never historically appeared on console or Steam. Dream Team is arguably only on Mac as a byproduct of all Apple devices now sharing the same platform codebase.

    If Sonic Dream Team ever gets a console/Steam release at some point down the line, it would be a real surprise and wouldn't negate any mobile platform exclusivity the game has (which this story is kind of about).

    I have some IT background from this, and apparently this is currently not possible. This game runs on ARM architecture, not x64 - which most of our PCs run.

    This game will not run on pre-M1/Apple Silicon Macs for this very reason.
