  • Sonic & Co. Fight Eggman's Dreams in Sonic Dream Team, Launching Dec. 5 on Apple Arcade

I'm dreaming of another Sonic game this year.

Less than a month since the launch of the last Sonic game, we've already got the announcement of our NEXT Sonic game, coming from mobile developer SEGA HARDlight, developer of the Sonic Dash series, Sonic Forces Speed Battle, Chu Chu Rocket Universe, and others.

While details on the game are light right now, the trailer shows off bright and colorful 3D environments, multiple playable characters, and new animation by Powerhouse. The trailer itself also features a new track composed by Tee Lopes. From the official press release...

    Quote

In this all-new Sonic adventure, the evil Dr. Eggman has discovered The Reverie – an ancient device with the power to manifest dreams in the real world. Navigate twisted dreamscapes, rescue your friends, and put a stop to Dr. Eggman’s nightmarish dreams of world domination!

Below are a few of the key features players can look forward to this December:

    Six Playable Characters
Choose from six different characters – Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, Cream and Rouge. Each character brings their own flare and personality, fitting within three movement types that provide unique exploration opportunities while navigating the dream world.

    Spectacular Boss Battles
Four spectacular boss battles that will test your skills across the different movement types.

    Never-Before-Seen Dream Worlds
We’re not in Green Hill anymore! Play through 12 intricate levels set within four unique dream worlds with mind-bending environments that include wall-running, gravity changes and more.

    Combining Mobile and Cross-Platform Experiences
Sonic Dream Team bridges the gap between mobile and console, allowing players a quality experience across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV.

But with these 6 OG characters, someone is going to be mistyped. Tails Rouge and Cream cant all be Fly types.

Think SA2 for Rouge, not Heroes.

I'll get this out of the way first - Apple Arcade exclusivity sucks and people saying "just buy any Apple product, it can even be Apple TV for less than 200 euros" are way too privileged and should consider that buying essentially paperweight just to play 1 game might actually be kinda stupid?

Anyway, as for the game itself so far - I'm not gonna lie, and this might be a bit of a hot take, but I don't exactly like the art-style of this. It fits the theme I guess of being a dream world, but it reminds me too much of Mario games and Fall Guys, and that's 2 things I don't really want to be reminded of when I play a Sonic game. Now I know not all zones are gonna be like that, hell, the screenshot Hardlight posted yesterday looked pretty cool, but so far in the trailers it looks a bit flat in a lot of ways. Kinda think I like Frontiers' look more, but I'm also a bit of a sucker for the more realistic-ish vibes when it comes to Sonic. In terms of gameplay I can't really say much, but at least it's not a 4-lane autorunner, so that's cool. Having Cream and Rouge playable is pretty dope as well, hopefully they add more characters through future updates.

So yeah, maybe if I get an iPhone or an Apple device that's not iPhone 5C for free, then I'll maybe try it out. Otherwise the game just doesn't exist in my eyes.

I think Rouge is going to be labeled as a Power Type so she can act as a parallel to Knuckles like in SA2.

The one time we get a (possibly) physics-based official 3D game and it's exclusive to apple devices and behind a subscription...
The gameplay is probably going to be a lot more simplistic than it looks, but the way they're describing it is giving me a little bit of hope.

Funny how in January we thought 2023 would have no new games (DLC aside), but we got 3 instead.

Congrats to Cream fans, you were finally heard. I'm surprised Shadow got skipped, but a game like this game will surely have a dozen more characters later.

Time to buy an apple TV everyone. I think that's the cheapest device to get to play this 🤔

Now that I think about it, you can definitely beat the whole game before the return window ends on the Apple TV. 😳

Man, this is pretty much exactly what I've wanted from this series for so damn long and of course it turns out to be a phone game locked to a subscription service.

    Absolutely unreal.

As someone who DOES have Apple products, even I feel for those who would miss out on it.

That said, this is a pleasant surprise to see. The game looks very ambitious and I actually hope it does well. Mobile Gaming is really taking off, and to see smartphones rising to take on console-esque like games is something I encourage and look forward to so that more people can play and get into Sonic!

I'll definitely be trying this game out and telling my thoughts on it...when Armored Core 6's spell wears off. It's not exactly my aesthetic, but the gameplay makes me want to make an exception.

Surprised to see Rouge and Cream getting more love, but that's a good thing. I can see more characters being added to this and growing the game even more.

Yo, this is similar to something I came up with a while back! Except it's on Apple...

While does she look like Blaze wearing a cyan goat costume?

It's great to see Cream again be playable as she's been disrespected as of late with what Team Sonic Racing did not help. Is interesting they selected Rouge instead over Shadow at that, and given the team title we got Team Sonic here, but Team Rose, not so much in being down a member, but then stop to realize Rouge was originally meant to be the power type character for Team Rose for an all-girl team so neat coincidence.

    Oh yeah, good catch!

    Haha.  Ariem - REM.  Clever.

It also helps that we've already had a Ram character named Ari in the West.

Oof, you're probably right. I hate that Prime is canon, it makes no sense. Sonic is almost painfully out of character in that show, and it fits literally nowhere in the timeline. I have no idea why SEGA thinks that alternate universes are a bad idea. They're monumentally more organized than the mess that they just made. It's kind of a slap in the face, to us and to the poor lore team who has to keep track of this dumpster fire.

Same, though SEGA and Sonic aren't against alternate universes per say, Blaze is still from the Sol Dimension and all the other branches of continuity like the movie verse or Sonic Boom are still their own thing. Classic Sonic going back to being the past form of Sonic and going back to one world called Earth is actually a restoration of continuity since the retcons the Meta Era did tore giant plot holes in the older titles. (I've also heard they were based on a mistranslation to begin with but thats Tv Tropes) Prime just seems to be this weird exception, when regarding what was brought into the canon proper. (IDW tried to be close to the games as possible, while Sticks' inclusion is coming in from Sonic Channel not Sonic Boom according to the Bumblekast)

Seems kinda weird to share a news from TSS's own Twitter on here, but here we go.

As others here have said, kind of expected. Still, amazing that "Apple Arcade Exclusive" managed to trend today and the overwhelming response I've seen has been "That looks so cool, I'll never play it though!".

I'm sure Sega will make money off it, but it's not exactly a stellar reception for either Sega or Apple. Just hope if the actual product is good that Hardlight gets the opportunity to make something that everyone can play.

Man, I use Android so I have to sit out of playing a Sonic game that not only has Cream in it, which I think she was in Speed Simulator last, and it also looks cool.

    WHY SEGA WHY.

Just port this over to consoles at some point PLEASE.

Yes! Dream landscapes? On apple? Playable Cream and Cheese? I'm all up for it! This year, SEGA has been making me sit on the edge of my chair with Sonic Frontiers Final Horizon, Sonic Superstars, and the big finale! I use Apple all the time and I am so happy a Sonic game is coming on an Apple platform! I am ready for Sonic Dream Team!

SSS is pretty fun for a ROBLOX game, and You can still get Cream in game and a Witch cream skin as well.

Depends what you consider is canon though. To me, Sonic Prime is just another branching extension of the overall Sonic Universe. So it’s really no different to any other show, comic, movie or spin-off that’s come before it.

I say this in the sense that it’s not really “canon” to the games (and their already messy lore & narrative). Prime just reaches back in a more direct way using them as a baseline. I wouldn’t really think to much into it beyond that as it’s incredibly unlikely that future sonic game will ever reference the Prime series in any meaningful capacity (or at all).

The ironic thing though,  is that the subject matter of what Prime represents - a multiverse - was a perfect opportunity to explore all the various versions of Sonic media across the years via it’s “shatterverse”, and it didn’t (or has yet to) happen.

I wonder why SEGA want to put this game on the Apple Arcade instead of a game console?

And right after Apple increased the price of the Arcade subscription.. Oh well, it seems like a pretty solid game judging from the screenshots.

I wonder how well this will play with a keyboard and how much control that’ll give you over the character. Apple Arcade games are often designed to be multi-platform but are definitely designed around the use of a touchscreen. Each game is a mixed bag regarding how well keyboard and/or mouse and controllers are supported while playing on a Mac, iPad, or Apple TV.

For those planning to play on an Apple TV: The included ‘Magic Remote’ really is the worst way to play games. It’s often supported, but think of it as a clickable trackpad for your thumb.. You should use any supported controller if you have one, like any of the bluetooth-enabled Xbox or Playstation controllers.

Of course the one mobile game not everyone can play is canon.

    Fuckin' hell

Yeah, but remember this isn't the first canon Sonic title post-Adventure that a game went exclusive to a console/mobile. It's rare to see this happen, but it happened before.

EDIT: Sonic Colors is the first canon game post-Adventure to do this. Luckily I had a Wii but imagine if you are a 360, PS3 only owner.

Personally I don't mind it being Apple exclusive but what I could really go for is the ability to simply pay a flat fee upfront and buy it to own. I'm willing to pay for apps as long as they give me a good value. It's the great ruse that is "free-to-play" that destroys my interest in mobile gaming (that and touch controls).
