The excellent Sonic Mania will finally be landing on mobile devices in 2024, as part of Netflix's growing Games subscription service.
UPDATE: Netflix did have a trailer uploaded to its YouTube channel but it was suddenly set to Private. We've uploaded a mirror which you can watch below until it comes back:
The announcement was made randomly in a montage video highlighting a huge expansion of the streaming service's games offering over the course of the next year. Alongside Sonic Mania, the trailer also shows other critically-acclaimed titles such as Hades, Dead Cells and Monument Valley joining the platform.
Sonic Mania first launched in 2017 to a hugely positive critical and fan reception - we reviewed it and thought it was a real return to form for the series, the shot in the arm that the franchise sorely needed after years of dreck. Then a year later, developers Christian Whitehead, Headcannon and PagodaWest decided to cheekily release a 'Plus' expansion which included more characters, remixed stages and other additional features.
While there's no firm release date as of yet (just a vague '2024'), the Netflix Games version will seemingly be based on the Plus version of the game, if the trailer's assets are anything to go by. Speaking of assets, it seems that one of the renders used on the trailer might not exactly be official (thanks for the shoutout, 'Game_Gambler'!)...
Whoops.
