  • Animated Short for Sonic Frontiers' Final DLC Released [U]

Get ready to face your fears on September 28th.

SEGA has released a new trailer for the upcoming third DLC pack for Sonic Frontiers, in the form of a series of animated comic panels that highlight the expansion's new story and playable characters.

The "Final Horizons" DLC was first teased last year as part of a series of free content developed to support the post-launch of Sonic Frontiers. In it, we can expect to be able to play as Knuckles, Tails and Amy Rose alongside Sonic as they face one last test on the Starfall Islands.

UPDATE Sep/13: Here's the official description of the trailer, straight from the official Sonic the Hedgehog website:

    Quote

Sonic Frontiers: The Final Horizon Update arrives on September 28! Rewrite your story and play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy in this climactic free update coming to Sonic Frontiers! Watch the prelude animation now!

Before the final battle on Ouranos Island, Sage reconsiders an unlikely scenario amongst her millions of simulations.

With the assistance of Sage and Dr. Eggman, Sonic sets this new plan into motion, and accepts the challenge of converting the Cyber Corruption into a vast, previously untapped power source.

Meanwhile, Amy, Knuckles, and Tails seek to do their part and begin searching for the Chaos Emeralds on Sonic’s behalf. Can their courage change their fate…

The official Sonic US social media channel also shared the following new promotional render for the Final Horizons DLC. Many thanks to @castell-neath and @ZinogreVoltfor sharing this new info. Rest of original story follows.

The trailer does a great job of telling us the particular challenges that each character will encounter - both physically and mentally. It's also packed full of fantastic artwork, so definitely give it a watch.

Sonic Frontiers: The Final Horizon will be releasing on September 28th.

Full gameplay demonstration is being saved for either TGS or the forthcoming Nintendo Direct. Either way this little preview is cool.

Not sure how obvious this was from the moment we found out about more playable characters, but I suppose this trailer implies each character will be playable in 1 open zone each. If that's the case, that's definitely better than what I was initially assuming, which was Tails, Knuckles, and Amy would only be playable in a silly little minute long cyberspace stage. So I'll certainly take it.

I'm still mixed. I'm probably the only person in the world who likes the shoot-em up finale and I'd be grumpy if they removed it. I'd care a bit less about them changing it if they suddenly announced that they are adding options for an increased draw distance and uncapped framerate. I do think the new playable characters will be good though - Knuckles will probably be my personal favourite since I'm expecting him to be able to climb and glide across the entire map.

Free DLC having 60% as many open zone levels as the base game seems optimistic to me. I'm setting my expectations at:

    Spoiler

Most of the new content being on one new island, with the narrative set between the 4th and 5th islands in the vanilla game. The plot would mostly focus on saving Sonic after he is corrupted and BSOD's. Afterwards some things on Island 5 would be reworked to be less... abrupt than they are in vanilla Frontiers.

The “Of my millions of calculations…” line from Sage in this trailer is what’s getting me… is that how we are revisiting the lead up to the final battle in the story DLC?

What I mean is, is Sage doing a “Doctor Strange Infinity War” scenario and running through all the outcomes and possibilities with her computer sized brain. Is this what we are going to play out in the DLC?

OR, perhaps even the ending we originally witnessed in the base game story WAS one of SAGE’s calculations all along (therefore not the “true” ending this DLC could provide).

Two trailers for the final update and both are are just animated shorts. At least this one looks pretty? I want to be excited for this update, because being able to play as other characters is something I've been waiting for for over a decade. But I can't really be too engaged until we see it in action.

New promotional render. Amy's got her hammer and Tails has an arm cannon. We also get a closer look at Supreme/The End.

Tails, Knuckles and Amy searching for the Chaos Emerald... so basically ye' good old Adventure-06 Last Story mode, huh? Wish Eggman and Sage were playable too :/

I'm ready for this. I want to see if they can build a solid platform for other playable characters moving forward.

Frontiers 2 has Sonic/Shadow, Sonic/Blaze or Sonic/Metal written all over it. If we are to get anything else other than that, Either Tails, Knux or Amy has to really knock this out of the park.

Yes, as we said, Kishimoto mentioned this update is experimenting for the next game so... I hope that if it doesn't work they don't go back to Sonic only, of course they should always improve on the correct idea, because most fans care about these characters and the hype surrounding this update says it all.

I also want to say, I hope the next game doesn't ditch Amy, Knuckles and Tails for other characters, I don't want too many playable characters, and I don't want just these 4 again, something like add Shadow or/and Blaze, maybe Rouge, and then stop. But I definitely think the trio in update 3 is a priority to me.

I don't think you played the game so I'll add a spoiler bar

    Spoiler

Sage is technically playable in the extra boss minigame, you don't control her directly though, but if Eggman and Sage were playable in the game, I think it's fair if they were in a minigame or sub-game

The source for that appears to be the official Sonic the Hedgehog website. Will add it to the news story, thanks!

I'm very interested to see how Amy, Knuckles and Tails will play and whether it will be limited to Cyberspace stages or also the open zone/s. It does seem like they want a 'do-over' of the ending of Frontiers as well, haha! Maybe it'll be more like how BioWare 'revisited' the ending of Mass Effect 3, instead of a total retcon.

With that Tails Channel info that dropped, I think you’re actually mostly right. All the chaos emeralds are always on one single island, and I doubt they’d make a singular exception for this dlc by spreading them apart all the different open zones.

So now I’m just left wondering what incentive there’d be to swap characters if they’re all playable on a single island. I’m thinking either:

    A) Some characters just can’t reach or get past certain obstacles, eg. you need Tails to fly to a high area, Knuckles to break a wall etc.

or B) 06 style checkpoints where you automatically change characters, which I hope is definitely not the case.

Ideally I’d want to be able to choose who to play as whenever I want, but if this is going to be anything like option A, I hope changing characters is smooth and relatively seamless rather than something like a DK barrel situation a la DK64.

My fear here is that Sega advertising the DLC as having "3 new playable characters" is going to be a bit misleading. I would not be surprised if we get something like Knuckles is playable in the open zone, Tails handles the cyberspace levels, Amy deals with the minigames where you help the Kocos.

That would certainly be a cursed solution… Still Tails’ arm cannon confirmation plus those leaked animations from a few months back, leads me to think they’re all playable in the open zone. Unless Tails uses his arm cannon like the avatar character does for the cyber stage levels…

Still I think we are okay.

I've not followed the leaks/datamines in detail, however I don't think you're right. I won't spoil anything much, but there is some key information.

    Spoiler

Animations exist for Amy, Tails and Knuckles in a variety of actions, including combat. Whilst they might be limited to just one island, all three characters are pretty equal.
