  • IDW to Publish Sonic Prime Comic Adaptation

The comic based on the cartoon based on the game series.

After covering the classic games, modern games, and even the movies, IDW now has its sights on Sonic Prime. A new Amazon listing reveals that "Sonic the Hedgehog: Sonic Prime, Vol. 1" will hit November 19th this year. The listing notes that it will be 144 pages and cover the first two episodes of the show.

Cover currently on the Amazon listing, presumably a placeholder

The adaptation itself is attributed to Hayden Robel, a writer managing projects for online comics platform Tapas who previously adapted SNK's The Last Blade for the service. It's unclear what format the book is expected to take, though IDW isn't historically known for "film comics" or "cine-manga" or whatever term you want to use for turning video screenshots into comic panels.

Though it's a bit odd that the first volume is only set to cover the first two episodes, they are perhaps the most dense episodes in the series for character and world building. If it continues past the first volume, later volumes could probably stand to be a bit more... abbreviated summaries rather than direct retellings.

Eh. It's just adaptations. Not even full one, just... two bloody episodes.

Sounds to me like one of those lamest comic adaptations. You know, with screenshoots as panels.

I dunno, maybe we should wait and see. All we have right now is a cover and "it's these two episodes". The description keeps referring to it as "volume 1". Assuming those two episodes aren't all they make, there are totally ways it could do a lot for Prime. I seem to remember hearing the Megaman Fully Charged comics were surprisingly good. If anyone from current IDW can put their hands on this, it could be cool.

Hmm...Not sure what to think until we know what it will look like.

Prime appearing in or being referenced in comic form is something I've been wishing for ever since watching the show, but that was with the expectation that it would be drawn and written like a typical IDW issue.

The cover (assuming it's not a placeholder), the book being a direct adaptation, and it being discovered through an Amazon listing instead of through solicitations is not giving me confidence, unfortunately. Pessimism with a side of "I could be wrong", it is.

The series itself will be beyond an afterthought by November..... odd that you would think there would be profitability to promote like this so long after its release.

unless there is an announcement of another season to go along with it, how is this not DOA?

Another reasons to assume this will be Screenshots Comic (like MLP Movie Comic). Only way this makes money if it's dirt cheap to make.

Yeah, screencap comic seems likely, especially since there's no artist credited. (IDW did the same with MLP FIM, TMNT 2012, and Transformers Animated.)

It will likely get a solicitation in the next month or so that we'll have a clearer idea of what they're doing.

I feel like calling it an "adaptation" and not crediting an artist lends to it being an arrangement of screenshots with probably some adapted dialogue/staging. I would've thought IDW would opt for making a comic set in that universe or telling stories within it that haven't been seen, similar to the Archie Sonic X comic. I'm pretty sure they even did this with the movie comic that was all side stories leading into the sequel, didn't they?

Still seems like a weird thing to release a year after the show's run is done and presumably with no follow up mentioned, regardless of what this turns out to be.

Well, the show did end in a cliff hanger. So if it does become official and if it does have to start with the two first episodes of season one, then I hope that it’ll be going on to the point where it would continue where the episode finale left off so that I could see Sonic defeat the chaos council physically. I mean, that blast that happened in the ending scene, there has to be a reason behind it.

Okay, so it’s just after the two first episodes of season one, but hopefully, they should be working they way through to the last episode.

pls just branch off of Season 3's ending! That was a horrible cliff hanger(nah, it'd be just an adaptation of the episodes or something)

    Define "horrible".

If you mean "It's so horrible they tease me like that, I simply must know what's going on" then agree to disagree. To me, this was the laziest cliffhanger possible, somewhere between "villain's hand dramatically raises from his grave" and dark screen  saying "The End... Or is it???"

If you mean "horrible = lame, I would prefer if show didn't end on lame note", then sure.

I mean that's what Sonic Prime itself did, so would work.

I’m totally with you on this one. They should’ve made an episode eight to the third and final series of the show rather then cut the eighth episode off, so that we would know what that blast is.

I'm preeeeeety sure writers don't know what that blast was too.

They just had no idea on what note to end, so vague cliffhanger sounded good enough.

They could’ve, they’re the ones writing the stuff. I wonder if they’re like picking bits off FanFiction?
