  • IDW Sonic #70 Cover and Solicitation Revealed - Who is the Phantom Rider?

    Solicitations and cover artwork for the next IDW Sonic #70 have hit the internet, with the introduction of a brand new mech character - and look! It's a giant talking egg!?

    In the upcoming issue Sonic takes to his trusty Extreme Gear, Sonic Riders-style, as the Clean Sweepstakes story (that begins in issue #69) continues. A new mysterious racer, dubbed the Phantom Rider, suddenly appears and plans to cause drama on the track.

    Here's the awesome logo-less Cover RI as shared by IDW artist Nathalie Fourdraine:

    "Logoless version of my #70 cover! It's Sonic and...!?," Fourdraine teases, adding "Who's that guy?! And more importantly is that a giant talking egg???" Fellow artists Aaron Hammerstrom and Min Ho Kim threw in that the pair may have also had a hand in the Phantom Rider's design...

    I haven't touched the comics in a long time and had no clue they were doing anything with Riders. You now have my attention.

    Always fun when a new character is introduced. Assuming it isn't someone we know in disguise, of course. Design is cool, either way.

    It's likely a new character, and it's not Mimic because I thought Duo was his cover and was also in the competition already. Probably not Infinite either, due to him being dead and off-limits, also because it would be weird to use a character in a mech suit and take that off only to reveal a character with a mask.

    Speculation is so fun, but I'm betting on a new character.

    I was going to say "Starline wouldn't be caught dead in that outfit" except that that is exactly what Starline would want you to think.

    I still don't know if he'd actually be willing to dress like that, though...

    This upcoming arc looks awesome already! With a cool design like that, I can't wait to see this new Phantom Rider in action.

    Also, Nathalie Fourdraine's covers are always a treat. Love her art style.

    I'll take either, but Infinite would have the cooler outfit. (Don't tell Starline I said that, he's very prideful about his appearance.)

    It's OC the Edgy Hedgie. He slayed the 5th dimension and oofed another world, and he likes brooding and kittens lol

    it would make sense since free riders had metal sonic in disguise to join the competition. might just be wishful thinking though as I really want more metal sonic focus

    edit: im totally tin foil hat theorying right now but the line about coming back for revenge... maybe bc he was defeated as neo in the first arc?
