Just sneaking in before the end of the last week's check-in period to say that sadly I made no progress due to a number of life things happening. I am determined to complete Judgment next week and pick Halo back up so I should have some good news in a week's time!

EVERY SINGLE CUP ON 50/100/150/MIRROR/200 CC ON 3 STARS, ALL GOLD MARIO PARTS UNLOCKED

Now for the reason i was gone for so long, this took me about 40 hours to pull off and by the end of it i feel like a kart racing god. Not a single soul is ever beating me on this game ever again.
I've never really played the other mario kart games for comparison but if i had to guess this would be the best one
The car controls amazingly, the tracks are fun, music is fire, and the presentation is spectacular
cant wait for mario kart 9

Game 24: Sonic Rush

All S ranks, All chaos/sol emeralds

Super fun game, obviously the music and presentation are a highlight, the Sonic vs blaze boss fight has to be the coolest thing to ever touch a nintendo console
Also originally i never intended on going for all S ranks but my electricity and internet were out for 24 hours or so and i had nothing to do, so i went for it. As all other sonic games, it gets better once you learn the levels and the S ranks are really challenging.

(Since there's no condenced screen in sonic rush showing all your progress and i am NOT sending 14 seperate screenshots detailing every zone for each character, i am aware there's zero proof of this so.. just trust me bro)

Game 25: Sonic Rush Adventure!

All chaos/sol emeralds

Although i was never a big fan of the marine/pirate story theme i still enjoyed this game a lot
I really like the new mechanics like building and upgrading various boats to get to new zones, the story and characters are charming and its a pretty big improvement over the original rush except for the level design and themes themselves.
Which is truly a shame, since everything else about this game is amazing.. Its not like the levels themselves are bad or anything its just a bit of a disappointment compared to the original rush.

To make the poor piccolo guy's job easier here's the count:
Games beaten - 25
Games completed - 19

Thanks for reading, i'll be back soon enough

Hey, there! Speaking on behalf of 52 Game Challenge staff, while we greatly appreciate following the template I established, make sure not to bury the lede when listing your game.

To make our jobs a little easier when verifying, just simply list next to the game's title if the game is 100% or not. It does a world of difference for us. Thanks!

#7/52 - DuckTales Remastered (PC)

Finished it 100% on extreme difficulty. Initially I had been playing on my completed save file on hard mode without intending on restarting and going for everything again, but I had one remaining achievement I decided to go for.

Game #23 Shovel Knight- Pocket Dungeon

Finally, after a year, I got around to beating this game. What a surprising challenge this was. I randomly went from not being able to get passed stage three, to sweeping the whole game in one run! Very proud of this one.

If it wasn't for this event going on I might not of even got around to beating this one anytime soon.

Week 11

Game No 14 Completed.

Ok.this week I decided to go proper Sonic and Knuckles...but via Sonic 1 on Origins and Taxman Sonic 1 on Android.

The overall feeling is that Mobile Sonic 1 in widescreen just looks so much better.  The only aspect which isnt as good is the final victory pose graphic in which the original is much better. Gameplay wise they are both spot on in terms of controls etc but playing as Knuckles is certainly a bit harder with his lower jump height.

Away from this, Am still playing HFW and completing side missions to boost my level which is now up to level 36. Just completed the side mission where you track down the missing woman who became a Tenakth rebel and have found a rellic close to the base sitewhwere you find and release her from the rebels. The crate and elevetor puzzle was absolutley horrible! Am now doing the mission with the radio / steel rod. Still enjoying. Now I have a break from work this week Im hoping to get more done on both this game and my sonic completions lol!

Latest check-in, played a bunch of games like Pokèmon Unite and Master Duel.

Defeated Anita & The Leviathan from Terraria: Calamity, and also cleared DOORS!

I uh.. forgot to snap an image of the relic that proves i beat the boss though, oops.

At least i got an image for DOORS!

Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen  - Platinum https://psnprofiles.com/trophies/6743-dragons-dogma-dark-arisen/Rabid-Coot

Its only natural for a few games to be forgotten with a decade after playing and hundreds of games between then you do a new run through on the port and realise that despite some solid gameplay the plot really is that forgettable.

Finished: 18 Completed: 18

Amazing game. I played it when it first came out, and decided to have another playthrough. Haven't completed the game 100%, and there is a lot of added content since I last played, so I will definitely be going back to this one.

Behold the unparalleled power of the Super Nintendo.

Spoiler

I've had this game since new (granted, the Genesis version) and I'd never sat down to try and actually beat it. I know why now. Each match you need to win 4 rounds.  Each round can take around 5-8 minutes, and you won't win every one because the AI does a reasonable job of providing credible competition without obviously cheating.

You're also playing against characters like this:

image.thumb.png.1f0780d62186fadea047b36e7997486d.png

Yeah.

There are 5 matches that you have to win before you even get to the final tournament; and if you lose a match you have to restart the whole thing over again. It's insane.

image.thumb.png.8e943f34e88f35d8839602005c557a44.png

Wow. A trip to... Indiana. Great.

image.thumb.png.00c1e7ae07cb36326200c85533549677.png

image.png.699092342961a4d7c91a08e9b686e1e6.png

This game has no passwords by the way. It just... expects you to spend several hours playing a billiards game in single player mode. And even though it doesn't have passwords, it has this... level skip? Checkpoint?

image.thumb.png.78c7924c6b7e40dfe53c76213e4b7cdd.png

Like what? What the hell does that even mean? Just implement passwords!

And then when you finally win (after 5 more matches), you're greeted with this bizarre... like, fake interview at the end.

image.thumb.png.d141d260e85f3d05c26fc1adc2c4ef4c.png

image.thumb.png.6f1a1470e2f9c2f30707f61cc3a34f20.png

image.thumb.png.b0f7864c43918a7941d10b781899d3d8.png

lmao, what?

I'm ragging on the single player structure of this game, but the actual billiards part of the game is pretty great.

image.thumb.png.b00932406a70d04e1ed74fd610a6a474.png

The physics are pretty good, the aiming system is really good and the game even lets you play it from multiple 3D-esque angles of questionable usefulness that do look pretty cool at least:

image.thumb.png.8c4ea8df2215fb7f9e6b5dbb54b2e851.png

image.thumb.png.8f8c79ab0c42a49a2f39f27b77619112.png

image.thumb.png.9d1aebf18ff505ec38e274f9fe8619e0.png

The Genesis version is pretty much identical except it has worse colors and the SNES' shitty CPU slows the game to a crawl when breaking at the beginning of the round and the Genesis version doesn't.

image.thumb.png.05206a31be0cae04a6717c8f926eb36b.png

All told skip the single player and it's a fun party game to play, still.

BUT, Surprise! I also played something else this week:

image.thumb.png.1a934f1f233d77e8fe329d2613d06bc5.png

And its Japanese version:

image.thumb.png.01f28c51ca4e44a0f68b91fb6d9bfd0a.png

have beaten this quite a few times before, but I was interesting in cataloging the differences since I hadn't ever beaten the Japanese version.

Spoiler

image.thumb.png.e0629cbaa8c506a1a172bbe2ab472236.png

image.thumb.png.6ffa6b2bb7b61020055bb1818218b415.png

They're... not nothing; but I was pretty surprised to learn that this is like a Sonic Adventure vs Sonic Adventure International thing where the Japanese version is clearly unfinished.

In the Japanese version all of the (simpler, less animated) crowds in the backgrounds are the same in each venue:

image.thumb.png.f63c7085d82b3277a6baca5aaf2aadf7.png

image.thumb.png.578f5bef7fbc0741114f072e976af057.png

When the US version has completely new, better art for every location and the character portraits are more detailed and better animated, too:

image.thumb.png.384dab56c778ce5707a1c5550e496304.png

image.thumb.png.72805cc37f5d1dc80b066accfcf38684.png

The Japanese version has some music issues. The credits music is missing instruments, and it doesn't have the most insanely happy game win theme you've ever heard:

To go along with the congratulations screen that's in very badly formatted English in all versions:

image.thumb.png.e39a535c4ee68bb514036ec211e9367e.png

But the most notable change is the Japanese version is a fair bit harder, in theory, because it the spin gauge can only go from left to right once before it locks on the side opposite of your hand. This game basically controls like every golf game made in the past 40 years otherwise:

image.thumb.png.1da6dbfc611a343a0bc6c076a9e43963.png

image.thumb.png.a39dd29e8f2a9b29fb51da801c4659e4.png

That means you immediately have to choose your spin angle or you're fucked. Now, granted, if you've played this game for 30 years, it's not particularly hard to "get" it and how it fakes its physics:

image.thumb.png.c190a9105e38fbf834dfe87b8efaf254.png

image.thumb.png.387fb931652081f520148a270b76ea4b.png

image.thumb.png.43cb707d362817469a941ae2d04dae61.png

The Japanese version pretty consistently knocked about at least 50 pins off of my usual career mode score (and up to a hundred on certain rounds because of different ball speeds) because of that system in the original game that was removed from the US release and I had to pick my shot much faster:

image.thumb.png.14721b5bad6a3ad5a95d2464304856cb.png

But then I discovered something:

image.thumb.png.bb487e97304cad88c9ebd1d8e5c6cf29.png

image.thumb.png.4889ca59450128a222bd46dab7345789.png

image(1).thumb.png.02aa092de1c3e3d269ff9b69333726c0.png

image.thumb.png.d709b0cb7e478a8cebcb8ac65e4c19b3.png

image(2).thumb.png.f74602256749f176fc16b0d5bba7306c.png

The AI cannot function with this system as it was in the original game for like 80% of the career mode. It's fucking hilarious.

But then the last computer opponent, which is a mirror match in both games:

image.thumb.png.35f91d494edddd6b3b8936787ffafe0e.png

image(1).thumb.png.e8852d280291cdb5fc8742fc315e3c29.png

Took me to the tenth frame and could have won when I kicked the shit out of him in the US version, so:

image.thumb.png.ee6ab040832249b5488427e5fae6542f.png

image.thumb.png.5c533e3b286b165e533d349adeaced35.png

Yikes! Wacky that I bowled the same in both versions for the final character.

Anyway:

image.thumb.png.891ba9f36c3ccbf43595e4760d0a5353.png

image.thumb.png.5fab5f1e60d1f91fe57b928bdc5a25c5.png

Also why is the game over music and animation so sad D:

BUT WAIT THERE'S A THIRD:

image.thumb.png.553642ffc91fda04d47f20fb773f8719.png

This is legitimately one of the first games I ever played. My cousin who was a few years older than me had it on his Game Boy just a tiny bit before we bought our Sega Genesis. I had never beaten this one either; both because the core gameplay loop is not amazing (I mean, it's practically a launch title for the original Game Boy that was derived from practically a launch title for the Famicom) but also because the difficulty level spikes like mad about 2/3rds of the way through.

Spoiler

This is just a bog standard, hard-as-balls superscalar-esque game with decently smooth scrolling but horrendous sprite flicker:

image.thumb.png.97ae90c30aea357b61db516004672c45.png

And a boost mechanic similar to Super Hang On:

image.thumb.png.ba1bd8c7b7ad41720b1edc856420b554.png

The only notable thing about it is the parade of 1980s anime bikini girls hanging out around your favorite Nintendo characters:

image.thumb.png.191baa840a05db071aa8f51b87a28497.png

image(1).thumb.png.69cd838c0f1efa4ac27377c3149f68dd.png

image(3).thumb.png.2c2158f8b161bd5f0bcc6ecdfea6fd10.png

image(4).thumb.png.cdd4c6a163e67e3807d04e0d9df89dc1.png

Plus 80's Anime Bikini Girls with Nintendo's own 80's Anime Bikini Girl:

image(1).thumb.png.b6ca064449a1e42183a7eb5fec0e8954.png

But in the end:

image(5).thumb.png.87ae52355f06b7c5cc3bd9dadfafc089.png

image.thumb.png.149afef03d50f12c7e61eacf1eff6a09.png

image(6).thumb.png.4b9f0a6a617f22510f650d4d0a29376c.png

Even by late 1980s arcade game standards driving past all of the course endings you already saw to get "Please Play Again" is kind of a lame ending.

Interestingly it does have a battery backup just to save times, which is a pretty bizarre game/reason to include such expense in but appreciated nonetheless:

Take notes, Championship Pool for the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo.

Game #25 Sonic Frontier's + Final DLC

I beat the base game last year, but FINALLY got around to doing the final dlc. This was way too difficult. But the ending was worth it. But a really great game, and I'm glad I finally wrapped this one up.

I typically put 100% in quotes, with pictures to verify it. As with all of my game updates that I upload. This specific game though, is just a completion playthrough. But I apologize for being vague and not elaborating better. Thank you for bringing it to my attention!

Yeah, it just got a bit confusing sometimes due to the DLC in the mix. No worries, though! I will bear it in mind!

That's understandable. The whole game in itself was rather confusing. I hadn't taken the time to collect every since essence, red ring, and all of the fish to catch. I might go back to it eventually, but for now I'm just happy to have that game out of the way 😅😮‍💨

Yup! Although bear in mind, getting every memory token, music track or big Koco won't count towards completion if it makes you feel any better. We only count BASE game completion, so the "100% reward" and those three items the game tracks were something that was added in Update 2.

Update:

I'm currently still grinding all the stuff I have missed in FF7 Rebirth, still 2 more continents to go and a ton of mini games..

This game is absolutely huge. I already accumulated around 80 hours, and I still have a whole playthrough AND brutal optional bosses to do in order to achieve 100% completion. This is nuts.

I may start doing a few more games 'on the side', we're almost 4 months in already and I'm still sitting at 4 games completed..that needs to change, lol.

Also..have the rewards for last week been given out already? Made my last Update exactly a week ago, but have not received a reward yet. Thanks for checking! :)

To fully clarify, what is officially considered the requirements for the challenge is what’s in the game’s trophy/achievement list, which is significantly easier.

Weekly check-in time, I suppose; going through some things right now, and when I am gaming, I'm finding myself getting worn out on Mega Man; I think I should take a small break from the Blue Bomber and clear some games before getting to Mega Man 10. They're still good games, of course. Of course, I plan to take an even longer break after I beat Mega Man 11.

I also decided to put in a category I call "honorable mentions," where I put in games that don't truly count for the challenge, but I still feel like I wanna talk about them. However, they will only be mentioned in the weekly check-ins.

Before I do that, the obligatory "Games I've beaten so far" category.

Words fail me on this one's story, but I will try; a hippopotamus named Hipopo (who looks more like a dog or a platypus to me) who must save his girlfriend Tamasun from the evil Fire Demon, while saving other hippos along the way. Armed with balls of water, he will stop at nothing to save Tamasun and save the day.

The game itself? Simple stuff, you throw these water balls at enemies, and that apparently stuns them and allows you to walk into them to beat them. This game, being an arcade game, is tough, and you will die a lot. Good luck figuring out how to finish off the final boss without a guide.

I would mostly play this one during breaks at work, only really taking it seriously for the final fight, but it's good to spend a few minutes with if you got save states.

46. Mega Man 9 (I assume 100%, since I got the energy balancer and other items, but I'll let staff decide that one)

It's been a while since Wily last wreaked havoc on the land. But then, Dr. Light gets accused of having sent robots to cause chaos, complete with video evidence. Apparently, people in this world believe two trips to the jailhouse is enough to reform Wily, because they believe he's here to save the day. It's up to Mega Man to get to the bottom of this and clear Dr. Light's name!

This game goes back to the NES style of doing Mega Man...early NES, that is, since even the charge shot and slide are gone. I will admit, I myself am divided on whether or not they should've done this, but if nothing else, I still enjoyed this throwback to the NES games.

Because I didn't wanna fight with a Wii/360/PS3 emulator at the moment, I simply played this on my Switch via Legacy Collection 2. I will admit, I did miss the save states at points, though what Legacy Collection 2 offers for checkpoint saves proved to be a good compromise; letting me save my bolts, health and energy, but still requiring me to get gud.

I say check this one out. I recommend Legacy Collection 2 for the modern age.

And now for the honorable mentions category; this game isn't gonna be counted on the tally here, at least not this version of it, but I wanted to talk about it.

Honorable Mention: Ms. Pac-Man (Arcade)

The sequel to the original Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man also chomps ghosts, but then she meets her eventual husband, have a chase, and then eventually have a baby named Junior. That's basically the plot of the game in a nutshell.

The gameplay sees you going around a maze, eating dots, and getting power pellets to eat ghosts, like in the original. The change is that some fruits seem to move, and I've been told the ghosts have a different pattern, though to be honest, I never paid attention to that detail.

This photo marks the last cutscene of the arcade version before it just becomes harder and harder. Some versions have trophies, while some others have a more defined ending screen, but since I didn't play those versions for the challenge, I'm not counting it right now. Still, it's a classic, one that's getting less and less preserved thanks to legal issues I'd rather not get into; they already removed the phone version, and time will tell if other versions follow, so I recommend you play this one while you can.

Checking in! Since Spider-Man 2's not an option for me atm, I've decided to simply continue my venture through the Spyro Reignited Trilogy with Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!

(...wait, that's not how you spell Gateway to Glimmer...)

Differing regional titles aside, I'm very interested in getting around to this game; I've played very little of the original Spyro 2 (or 3, for that matter) with my only exposure being through Crash Team Racing's hidden demo of the game, and playing through a family member's copy when I was very young, so this'll be a different experience for me compared to the first game. It'll also be on a different PC than before, as I recently got an Asus ROG Ally for an early birthday present and am now aiming to play through the rest of the trilogy (and future PC games) on that instead of my original gaming laptop. So far, it's been a blast to use, rekindling my interest in PC gaming that the laptop didn't quite manage to do for me.

Anyway, that's all for now.

Ongoing: Stella Glow (3DS) - One way or another, I've found myself playing an awful lot of strategy RPGs in the last year or so.  This is one I picked up as part of a last-minute FOMO spree for the 3DS, on the assurance that it was an excellent strategy game - though I'd dismissed it in the past owing to its rather dubious female character designs.  In truth, I think I was sort of right; it is a very good game, but I also think it's probably carried best if you're a deeper fan of its extremely anime aesthetics.  As somebody playing it ongoing, it can be quite slow and doesn't give nearly enough catch-up XP, and its character balance is not particularly well-considered.  I'd been hoping to finish it this week, but instead I just got to maybe the beginning of the endgame; which at thirty hours in could still be a lot yet (HowLongToBeat estimates nearer fifty hours).  So away it goes until the next time I need to call on my 3DS, and hopefully I'll finish it then.  When I do, I'll have a longer write-up on exactly what the game is and does.  ...Though I tried to take a broadly representative screenshot:
