IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

It may be April Fools, but this isn’t a joke! With our new overlord having taken over the site, the SSMB staff have been recruited into his ploy to find Froggy by any means necessary, and by extension, that means I’m recruiting ALL of you to help our efforts! That’s right, we’ve got a bonus challenge for the event, thanks to Big!

For the very first 52 Game Challenge bonus challenge - you’re going to help everyone’s favourite purple cat retrace his steps and see if we can find Froggy! So what do you gotta do? It’s quite simple.

Within the next week (Monday April 1st to Monday April 8th) - play any game featuring Big the Cat, and post evidence of it. It can be Sonic Adventure, Adventure 2, Heroes, LEGO Dimensions, hell, even Sonic Chronicles if you so desire. As long as it has Big, you’re golden!

Everyone who participates in the challenge will receive a special achievement that will be revealed in the coming days, so let’s put our heads together and help Big find Froggy!

Week 12 - check in and Big Challange.

Game no 16 completed and 100%ed.

Sonic Colours DS

Big makes a cameo to give you a mission in Aqua Park to find Froggy (of course!) So in terms of finding him  we can rule that out as he was not to be seen there.

Enjoyed my Colours DS adventure. Good boost gameplay, solid level design, great music and a final boss thats better than the mainline console one in Mother Whisp. Missions are fun and the red star rings can be tricky so replay value is great.

Away from this, still chipping away at Horizon FW. Still completing side quests to get my level up, and had some really tricky ones which included entering the forbidden valley and switching off the lures. I mean, a ravager, a thunderjaw, a mamouth, and 2 spectres!!?? Oofff. Still, job done, just in the middle of climing the tower with Alva to get the programme to control the tides. Again, great stories told away from the main quests - a true masterpiece!

Thank you for this lenient requirement.

For as much of a running joke Big is I was surprised to find so little in Dreams, just two scenes and a very simple game that only has Big on the lose screen.

Guess it's time for another update.

It had been something of a while since I last played Sonic Frontiers. Figured I'd bop that one in while schooling some Titans along the way. Of course, a familiar furry friend couldn't help but show up while I was fishing.

Sonic_Frontiers_Screenshot_2024.04.01_-_

He provided quite the serene comfort and company especially while I was cooking some delicious slabs of meat on a nice open fire.

BONUS ENTRY: BIG EVENT

While this is an officially licensed Sonic game, this is something hosted on Roblox. As such, it isn't considered an entry for the 52 Game Challenge. But it CAN count for the extra Big Challenge. Considering there is no other way I would be able to talk about this game, makes sense for Speed Sim to be my April Fool's bonus entry so I can save the real games for the challenge. So... Welcome to Episode Big!

Weekly check-in; largely been playing Power Bomberman, but since that fangame is still in active development, even if I unlock all the characters, the most I might be able to give it is an honorable mention. But right now, can't even give it that, but it's fun.

Outside of that, took a trip to an arcade, and beat two games. I wonder if I should've taken that trip, but what's done is done at this point.

But first, the Obligatory "Games I've beaten so far" list.

46. Mega Man 9 (100%)

Honorable Mentions:
Ms. Pac-Man (Arcade)

47. Batman (Raw Thrills) (As close to 100% as would count for this game)

This one is technically endless, but unlike Ms. Pac-Man, at least at the time I'm typing this, it has no home ports to add achievements, nor anything. I asked, and was at least allowed to count the end of each boss. I had to take three photos to prove I did it, though, since you can fight them in any order, and unlike Jurassic Park, there's nothing to mark you beating each boss.

The plot is simple; the Joker, Bane and Mr. Freeze are terrorizing Gotham at what I assume different points in time. The Caped Crusader does what he does best; hop on his Batmobile, and stop them! He also non-lethally shoots baddies and non-lethally blows them up with them inside, because Raw Thrills apparently doesn't know what "non-lethal" even means if their Jurassic Park game is anything to go by.

At its core, this is a driving game. But while Raw Thrills usually makes racing games, and this appears to be made on the same engine as those racing games, this one is instead more about doing missions, where you're either taking down specific enemies, recovering items, or even flying to shoot down turrets. One mission even has you stopping the Scarecrow's balloons, apparently putting them so high up in the air it doesn't hurt anything, I guess.

The voice acting isn't the best, but it's still a joy seeing these characters brought to life. Batman does seem to have some one-liners, which I suppose is appropriate for an arcade game. I should also note that I appreciated being able to select different Batmobiles from different versions of Batman over the years, though I believe this game came out in 2013; if your favorite Batmobile came after that year, well, sorry, Raw Thrills lacked the time machine to be able to put in that one. Still, it's impressive they went out of their way to do that.

Sadly, according to Raw Thrills' own website, this machine is no longer in production, and again, it doesn't have a home port at the time I'm typing this, so this is one you have to play Any Way You Can. It's fun for what it is, though, and I liked it.IMG_20240330_172137.thumb.jpg.820541def254b553829e98b89b815252.jpgIMG_20240330_173403.thumb.jpg.f435ce4efe0770645f984a0239a9c6af.jpgIMG_20240330_174649.thumb.jpg.bb2077be0cdc4ba576d43f37cb5e8cc8.jpg

48. Halo: Fireteam Raven (100%, for beating the game at all)

Another lightgun game from Raw Thrills, much like Terminator Salvation and their Jurassic Park game, but this one is a bit special to me, since it was for a period of time in my local arcade until it wasn't.

I've never been a huge Halo guy, though according to the wiki, this takes place during Halo: Combat Evolved, where you play as Fireteam Raven shooting up baddies, and Master Chief makes cameos throughout the game. I will say this was another fun one, and from what little I have played of Combat Evolved, the enemies seem to come from that. The story does have a sad ending for Fireteam Raven, since they die, though they do so knowing they helped out Master Chief on his own mission.

Fun fact: there's apparently a four player version of the cabinet with an even bigger screen. That's not the version I played, and in fact, none of the locations I went to had this version. But according to Raw Thrills' website, it exists. The game also lets you link stuff to your Xbox Live account for exclusive rewards, though I never did this.

I'd still say it's worth playing if you can find a cab, be it the two player version or the four player version. I don't know if Halo fans will get more or less out of it than I did, but I had a good time.

Big's fishing Derby! It's a fan game :)

Froggy ate all the Chaos Emeralds, and Big is saving him from ponds full of fish badniks around Classic zones, while Sonic saves the world on background! Guess they haven't met yet.

(Yes that there is Super Froggy)

I'm not sure if it's completed or finished, it doesn't have anything to collect, just fishing.

Popping in a bit earlier than usual, but I figured it'd be simpler for me to post the Big challenge stuff now instead of later. Since I haven't gotten around to modding either SA1 or SA2 to my liking yet, I decided to boot up Sonic Frontiers and take a trip to one of the game's somewhat-hidden Cyberspace fishing spots.

SonicFrontiers-60FPS(0.01666667ms)02_04_202420_53_50.thumb.jpg.8c0ba1d50f74c5a7fb7a029211f357be.jpg

Sure, there's nothing really special about the fishing in this game - it's effectively just a button-timing event - but it's an okay little time-waster. In fact, my initial playthrough of the game on PS5 was something of a Fishing-only run, progressing only through the fishing spots and no other Cyberspace stages... though that was primarily just down to how much I hate Sonic's controls in Cyberspace without mods.

On PC, however, it's a different story. I'm less inclined to find the fishing spots when the Cyberspace stages and controls are actually tolerable, but it's still nice to visit Big every now and then (even if it may not actually be him). So here's a quick collection of things we managed to fish today:

Spoiler

We found Nemo!

SonicFrontiers-60FPS(0.01666667ms)02_04_202420_54_34.thumb.jpg.880f46896f600f6e5e3c60a00a44d9e9.jpg

...I don't think these fish belong here...

SonicFrontiers-60FPS(0.01666667ms)02_04_202421_01_28.thumb.jpg.72ed694ad080f72f7ae46dba70765d4b.jpgSonicFrontiers-60FPS(0.01666667ms)02_04_202421_05_45.thumb.jpg.65cca1b5c0178e12a7efec1f3137d3b2.jpg

How did Eggman end up down there?

SonicFrontiers-60FPS(0.01666667ms)02_04_202420_57_43.thumb.jpg.37f810843577f1fbb522fb59919d0272.jpg

We even found a friend for Froggy!

SonicFrontiers-60FPS(0.01666667ms)02_04_202420_59_59.thumb.jpg.7313d3956cfc9871b6f7c61167748910.jpg

And no fishing trip would be complete without a hearty meal:

SonicFrontiers-60FPS(0.01666667ms)02_04_202421_07_29.thumb.jpg.8bf548cf67774dad62aa2f946bbf87f7.jpgSonicFrontiers-60FPS(0.01666667ms)02_04_202421_07_56.thumb.jpg.295c0aceeb19613eb6e6f3b61c732548.jpg

With that out of the way, it's back to Spyro 2 for me. I'm not sure if I'll be returning to Frontiers for the challenge proper, though; every time I come back to it, I find myself a little less interested in it, and even the prospect of reaching the final island and trying out the Final Horizons story has me more worried than intrigued. Then again, given that the Final Horizons doesn't count for this challenge (IIRC, at least) then who knows, maybe I will end up come back to Frontiers at some point this year. We'll see...

Time for the standard games update

Call of the Sea https://psnprofiles.com/trophies/12891-call-of-the-sea/Rabid-Coot

I only ever play Call of Duty when its on PS+ but its strange that they spelt the name wrong didn't set it in a war and made it focused on narrative with some puzzles. Hopefully Modern Wavefare is next.

I Am Dead https://psnprofiles.com/trophies/13624-i-am-dead/Rabid-Coot

Its a feature not a bug. Ever played a game and managed to clip the camera through an object? Thats a part of the gameplay here as you use your ghost powers to slice through objects to look inside.

This War of Mine Final Cut https://psnprofiles.com/trophies/16178-this-war-of-mine-final-cut/Rabid-Coot

You don't have to do horrible things to survive in a warzone but you may end up killing a few people and robbing others to make a character broken so you can improve their mental state for a trophy.

Bit of an oddity as PS5 ports go there's more content available overall with the paid expansions but the PS4 base version has the little ones expansion included as standard.

Game 9 Finished / Game 3 Completed - Silent Hill: The Short Message (PS5)

I finished a game! Started and finished this on stream this evening - quick little 2 hour game. It's not for the faint of heart, and it might even be a bit too much for Silent Hill fans - I thought it was interesting but not one I'll be rushing back to in a hurry.

Photos show an image at the end of the game post-credits, and then the PS5 dashboard showing 100% complete as there's no Trophies in this game.

Game 11: Rain World (Switch) - Although often framed as a Metroidvania, Rain World is really more of a survival game, just set in an interconnected 2D platformer world.  Last year, I completed the game as the Survivor; last month, as the Monk, which is supposed to be a sort of easy mode; and now, I have completed the last of the three non-DLC slugcats, the hard-mode Hunter.  It was absolutely hellish - a demon's challenge which requires you to know a huge amount about the game and exactly what you have to do, and in which failure via permadeath is very much an option.  Though others frame it as more of an arcade mode...  I am not good at Rain World, but I clawed my way through; with a result that owes as much to brute force and low tricks as it does to persistence.  Enclosed below are screenshots of Hunter's ending, and my statistics screen for that run.  (The huge number of cycles is probably because of starvation shenanigans, I did stick to the vanilla 19-cycle limit.)

Game 10 Finished - Amnesia: Rebirth (XSX)

Not a fan of this one - started playing it last October for a charity stream and then left it alone until yesterday, when I found out it was leaving Game Pass, so fired it back up and used a walkthrough to just get it done.

My favourite of these games so far is still the first one. This just felt too long. I did get all three endings though...which is to be expected if I had a walkthrough to hand, lol.

Progress Report:

image.png.cbf4d42f94b7cf32e86f7f42a88bffd7.png

I have a very large bias against ROBLOX simulator games since, more often than not, they are repetitive and, most importantly blatant cash grabs that somehow keep populating the front page of ROBLOX's list of games. Sonic Speed Simulator, the game that this screenshot is from, is honestly no exception. Yet at the same time, it has the charm that would be expected from a Sonic game (don't quote me on that, I'm no expert on the franchise even though I am a normal user on this forum). And the gameplay is actually pretty fun with your character being able to run around large open maps while you become faster as you progress.

While I may not play this game on a regular basis, I have no qualms with playing this every once in a while. It's a lot more than I can say about most other ROBLOX simulators.

Big the Cat Challenge: Big's Big Fishing Adventure 3 (Trial Version)

This is my submission for the Big challenge. There's barely any gameplay here, so I guess I can't count it as a beaten game, and it lasts no more than a few minutes, but boy, it was a hoot, with all the fourth wall breaking and the fact that apparently, Eggman wants to have a fued with Big over his game. I would say it's worth killing a few minutes with if you're in the mood for a laugh.

And yes, I did find Froggy. In the Mystic Ruins, and in the "coming soon" part.

Also, the best girl is my waifu, don't lie to me, game!

Big Bonus Challenge : The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog

I've been meaning to join this all year, but for whatever reason, this is what finally gave me the push I needed. Anyway, who's that familiar purple fellow fishing in the distance...? 🤔

Screenshotfrom2024-04-0601-30-41.thumb.png.f4522f470bc1c97f60346ed0575de113.png

Hope he doesn't find me. I've got a murder to solve.

Weekly Check-In, Game 1 : Sonic Adventure DX (Steam Release)

As for the challenge proper, I (finally) started playing Sonic Adventure earlier this week! This is my first time playing it, or even seeing most of the levels and cutscenes for that matter, so I've been spending a lot of time exploring and talking to every NPC I can find rather than actually progressing the story.

Screenshotfrom2024-04-0222-49-07.thumb.png.360d6cde6fb22278689d23e61062f44b.png

I also enjoy being the local menace. The citizens of Station Square are surprisingly patient, given that they never try to run me over for the frankly ridiculous amount of times I've held them up in traffic, waved Burger Guy in their faces and jumped all over their cars. I'm sure they've at least thought about it, though.

Since I'm playing this after already having beat SA2, I was going into this expecting the two Adventure games to be similar...And they are in some ways, but what surprised me was how much more SA1 already feels more like the "adventure" part of its title. Having to actually move Sonic to different locations, even taking the train to get to a level...it really does feel like you're traveling around as opposed to automatically being beamed to the next area or picking places off a map. Don't get me wrong, I love SA2 and its breakneck pacing, but I'm finding myself preferring SA1's Adventure Fields.

Screenshotfrom2024-04-0221-36-36.thumb.png.062d36eb6ec20159f385db587a24c487.png

Overall, my first impressions are pretty good from what little I've seen so far. Sonic's a breeze to control when he's not spindashing into everyone I try to talk to at the wrong angle, Emerald Coast and Windy Valley were both fun with their respective gimmicks, an excellent soundtrack is a given, and I'm excited to see what else there is. Oh, and that Chaos guy is pretty neat too I guess.

What’s this? A check-in a day earlier than I would usually post? Why yes! Although given the shenanigans that occurred earlier this week, I feel that it is only right to state my undying appreciation for everyone’s favourite (?) fishing feline, and inform the Sonic Stadium faithful that I have, indeed, managed to complete some gameplay with none other than Big the Cat himself. And here he is:

IMG_7079.thumb.jpeg.a136e75999bf09235bf1081efa3c850e.jpeg

Yes, as you can see, I have started to do a run through of Big’s story in Sonic Adventure DX - and have already completed the first action stage in his story at Twinkle Park - having successfully caught Froggy as well as a nice juicy fish to boot. Unfortunately, Froggy hopped off again, so it looks like Big is going to have to travel to the Mystic Ruins to see where he went…

Nonetheless, I intend to have Big’s story completed by the end of this weekend (with a little bit of luck). However, I will not be adding Sonic Adventure DX to the games finished/completed list just yet, as although I have completed Sonic’s storyline, I still have to finish the other characters’ stories yet, which could take a little while longer. Just wanted to ask if this is OK, since I don’t want to mess up my game completion list by mentioning the same game twice.

In any case, I’ll post another update tomorrow which will focus on the progress that I have made towards the other games and the main challenge overall. Until then, I should probably get back to hunting for Froggy - now, where did I put my fishing pole?!

BONUS BIG THE CAT BONUS - COMPLETE! (Edit: I finished Big’s story in Sonic Adventure DX. See post later on in the thread for more info.)

I've continued playing through games like Pokèmon Unite, Dragonvale and Master Duel, alongside Minecraft. Also, here's a picture of Big for the ongoing mini event.

Hiya, heard about this whole thing and I'm interested in joining! Just have a quick question, can games you've already beaten this year prior to starting the challenge count towards it, and can you recomplete games you've beaten in the past this year for it to count?
