What's so bad about Starlow?

Actually I'm surprised Starlow is even in the game due to how....... plain the game is right now.

What's so bad about Starlow?

Basically, she's incredibly obnoxious as a support character, always shoving tedious tutorials down the player's throats. Pretty much everything bad about Navi and Fi can also be applied to her.

Not to mention she acts like a total jerk to Luigi, always berating and insulting him for no reason and getting mad at him for being understandably scared. Hey, lady, here's an idea: Why don't you try fighting all these giant monsters and see how easy it is? Luigi may be scared, but he always pulls himself together and gets the job done. Meanwhile, you contibute nothing to the team other than being a total nag. Goombella, Starlow is NOT.

But didnt she lighten up to Luigi even shown she cared for him near the end of dream team

Tutorials would still happen with or without Starlow, they'd still be just as obnoxious and just as frequent. Using Starlow as the tutorial fairy is just so they don't have to introduce new characters for basically the same purpose.

My hype literally dropped like a rock when I saw that whole rescue Toad thing was actually the main goal of the game instead of an E3 demo, along with a ton of Sticker Star influence.

I liked some of the trio moves they showed off - that kind of whiplash thing, the more traditional paper aeroplane and drill - but gameplay isn't enough to me.  As a concept they so far seem to be executing this game in the most blandly conventional way possible.  They might have been better off putting solid Mario & Luigi (et al.) in the paper world.  ...Actualliy, now that I think about it, that does sound like a much more interesting concept.  Instead of "corral those Toads" it's "bust Paper Bowser's plot and escape from the paper world."  You can still have Paper Mario doing his thing but the effect of solid characters on a paper world seems like it would require more thought and originality than the effect of paper characters on a solid world (which has been done).

I did think it was kind of hilarious that Paper Bowser can't walk forwards and has to be shown kind of awkwardly crab-walking side-on to the viewer.

A great preview. I love how you start out as  luigi and toad in a luigi's mansion  like mission in Peach's castle before luigi accidentally opens the paper mario book.

Was sad that we weren't getting Paper Jam this year, but happy to know it won't be far into the new year.

Since NA didn't announce it for this year right away after EU and JP already announced it, I'm not shocked its not coming until next year. At the same time, I figured it would be early 2016.

A Japanese overview trailer was released yesterday.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4GE6_MMjFI

Irrelevant things include Papercraft Goomba from Sticker Star, Papercraft Kamek, King Bob-omb from 64, and the return of Giant Luigi (How does that work?).

The important thing is the reappearance of the Koopalings in a Mario RPG!

Please let them talk. They were silent in Superstar Saga.

The game is looking a bit better. But I'd rather play the old games first before I get into this. I've played a little in Superstar Saga, and I do have it on my Wii U, so I'll be trying that out (as well as the original Paper Mario) soon. I've already beaten Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario.

That overview did give me a bit more positive an impression of the game - I saw some unexpected returning characters in there, a couple of strong uses of the paper aesthetic that was one of the few things that worked really well in Sticker Star, a few spots where the narrative started looking like more than just walking from A to B.  I still think this is probably going to be too conventional overall as a Mario & Luigi game, but I'm no longer bracing myself for the worst.

I think the trick will be to treat it as it's own product rather than one or the other, like say the Mario and Sonic olympic games, No one comes in expecting a platformer that is true to either, but rather it's own style with elements of both games

Pre-order bonus revealed for Europe - get the game from either the Nintendo UK Online Store or GAME and nab yourself a set of papercraft characters!

Personally I think it's a neat little extra - it cleverly brings something from the game to life in the real world, which is something only Paper Mario could do!

Is it weird that I'm more interested in the pre-order bonus than the game itself? It's not that I lack interest in Paper Jam or anything, but...that Goomba is fucking adorable.

The reviews are in (well, for Europe at least) - here's a handy-dandy summary of the scores so far, courtesy of NeoGAF...

Nintendo World Report - 7.5
https://www.nintendoworldreport.com/...ros-3ds-review

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. was enjoyable, but it suffers from some severe pacing problems. The missions became a little too much to endure and became sort of mean as I inched closer to the end. The story didn't blow me away either, but the writing itself was cute and interaction between characters was fantastic. The environments mostly touch on known ground, but it is well put together and accompanied by some great tunes to boot. What made me finish the game were the puzzles and combat, which are as grand as ever. While I don't want spoil any bosses, you are ensured that they will give you a smile. Sometimes that smile is enough to keep going.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. is the last major title for the Nintendo 3DS in 2015 and in my opinion also one of the best!

Google Translated: For fans of Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario, this game is also a must-have, but even if you've never touched a Mario RPG, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. I strongly recommend. We play at least a little further, because Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. has plenty of cool content!

So overall Paper Jam seems to deliver, despite its simplified story and environment... but pacing can be a problem still. That's a shame. I had some issues with Dream Team's pacing, and hearing Paper Jam has the same problems is disheartening a bit.

But I am glad the responses so far are very positive, and have definitely convinced me this is still worth a buy when it comes out. Probably won't wow me, but won't offend me much either, and I think I can be fine with that : P

One especially positive thing that I've gleamed from the review discussions is that most (if not all) of the tutorials in Paper Jam are optional. None of that long-winded, dragged out nonsense like in Dream Team, which can only be a good thing in Paper Jam's favour!

Honestly, I don't mind the lack of new characters. As long as the game is funny, the battle system stays relatively the same and I can skip tutorials, I'm happy. It sounds like all three of those happened. I mean, I wish there were new places and characters, but that's just not on the top of my priority list. I wish I could afford this, but I'm already planning on spending a lot of money on a PS4, so I'll have to wait to get this.

Ugh, I really, really hope this game is paced better than Dream Team. I believe one review said Paper Jam took them roughly 25 hours, which is more on par with the other games in the series.

For reference, I clocked in a mind-boggling 40 hours on Dream Team, and that game had roughly the same amount of story as the other games. It's the only Mario game I ever played where I WANTED it to go ahead and end.
