Xbox One Discussion

lawl, so if I'm reading this correctly, second hand games can be more expensive to purchase than buying it new.

Even though that's illogical, I wouldn't be surprised if they did it. xD

So, was in town today, and went into Game just to browse, and overheard the guy at the counter telling someone that the likely price for the Xbox One/the price they've got down is £399.99, with games at around £50 each. Should chalk this down to them just sticking a general guesstimate on the price, rather than anything concrete, but still, it's something. xD

Wouldn't be surprised if retailers were kinda bitter at the Xbox One, it's gonna screw up their business somewhat.

Yeah, they won't be able to sell used games for the Xbox One much if Microsoft doesn't backpedal on it's policies. I know Gamestop would probably be pissed.

As I said when the news regarding the used games fiasco was new, this will give retailers a really big incentive to push the Wii U and PS4 over the X1.

Has anyone heard about/figured out how the second hand thing works yet? I know someone posted this already but, http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-05-24-this-is-how-xbox-one-game-trade-ins-will-work-apparently

There's been an update.

It sounds like the buyer will pay the fee the retailer sets, the retailer is the one who has to pay the activation code.

This makes absolutely no financial sense for the retailer, why would they do that when they'll probably make a loss on every game they buy from people? Or they'll give far less for trade-ins than they already do, and second hand prices will soar?

This second-hand dealio doesn't work out well for the retailer or the consumer. Echoing other sentiments, I can imagine retailers pushing the PS4 and Wii U instead to help them make more money.

Also Microsoft estimates the Xbox One will sell 400million in its life, and the 360 will sell 100million.

UM.

I would expect shelf space for the X1 to be pretty small compared to 360 shelf space. There is little for them to gain from selling this system.

Microsoft applies for patent on TV achievements.

Xbox One maker calls dibs on technique to encourage viewership of shows and ads. Xbox One is intended to combine users' gaming and TV watching in a single device, but Microsoft's plan to merge the two goes beyond sticking them in the same plastic casing. Last November, the company applied for a patent on an Xbox 360-like achievements system for watching TV.

"Television viewing tends to be a passive experience for a viewer, without many opportunities for the viewer to engage or have interactive experiences with the presented content," the application states. "To increase interactive viewing and encourage a user to watch one or more particular items of video content, awards and achievements may be tied to those items of video content."

Two examples given include doling out achievements for watching a single event like the Super Bowl, or for watching an entire series of a single show. "Additionally, by tying the awards and achievements to particular items of video or advertising content, viewers may be encouraged to increase their viewership of the content, thus increasing advertising opportunities," according to the application.

Microsoft also envisioned using the Kinect motion-sensing camera in tandem with this system. For example, achievements may be tied to viewers performing specific actions while they watch a show. The system can make sure the user is simply in the room while it plays, or it can tell the user to hold up a specific product. The camera would then scan the item held up and reward the user with an achievement. The patent application details a variety of possible rewards, including points for a GamerScore-like tally that is viewable by other users, new clothes and props for an avatar, virtual money for a game, or even physical rewards.

Conceivably, this could mean partnerships where TV companies pay Microsoft to have achievements for their programming - a kind of new form of sponsorship.

The Visual DRM thing is a possibility

No one can tell me there shouldn't be privacy concerns about this, especially in the possibility of compromise via hackers and etc.

Wow, what a fucking joke. If I'm reading it right then they're actually implementing measures to limit the number of people looking at the screen. This is a whole new level of control freak that Microsoft has stooped to. I mean seriously. Seriously. This is just getting absurd now. I just don't even.

Ladies and gentlemen, even one of the big three have caught the utterly delusional AAA "lol we're gonna sell a kajillion copies" bug.

Seriously, this is just sad.

And there's no way retailers are gonna stock this thing if there's any form of anti-used-game DRM, especially not if it actively hurts them.

"Microsoft’s senior vice president of Interactive Entertainment Business, Yusuf Mehdi, says that the company plans to continue to support the Xbox 360 into the foreseeable future, and the company even has a big announcement planned at E3 for the Xbox 360 that will “keep the console vibrant for years,” according to Microsoft."

If they've still got plans for the 360 to last more than even half a year after the Xbone is out, then why can't they just call it quits on the Xbone, take it back to the drawing board and actually think about some of these horrible decisions they're making? Surely someone up there in the boardroom can look back on it after all these negative media reports -and- successfully managing to turn the majority back towards Nintendo and Sony, and maybe actually think "... oh. We did something wrong." about all this?

Argh, just... what's going on in Microsoft's walls? Can someone please be a fly on the wall? Please?

Also, man, imagine if there's an achievement for watching porn... and one of your family or friends notices the achievement, then just walks out on you.

One Billion Dollars!

pyC4WFv.gif

I wonder how many of these new studios will be taken out back and shot, as happened with their first party stuff this gen?

Although not new, I bet Rare will be one of the first casualties. I'd expect Microsoft to just sink the ship and all of it's (sadly decomposing) IPs rather than admit defeat and sell them back to Nintendo or another (more competent) publisher.

Rare died a long time ago when almost all the creative people left. They still have some really good coders whose talents are wasted on Kinect shovelware tho.

It knows when you are sleeping

It knows when you're awake

This is getting rather worrisome: Kinect will talk back.

So what happens if we leave the Xbone alone in a room with a recording of every single line from Wheatley or GLaDOS?

I'm being serious. What would happen?
