I had a ton of fun with this. Just beat it last night, and I'm speed running as Tails right now. Now I'm stuck on the labyrinth zone boss again. Music is pretty much the same, but I find Marble Zone's music track to be a hell of a lot more enjoyable than the original. I can't place my finger on it, but it sounds much better to me. My only problem with this port are the special stages. God damn, they're 10 times harder than the version of them I played in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Speaking of which, I enjoyed this port much more than the SUGC port. I hate controlling 2d games with a thumbstick. So, I guess I'll just be keeping myself busy with the cd port, this, and the upcoming sonic 2 remake until a title is released for the xbox 360. You really outdid yourself with this remake, Taxman and Stealth. Keep up the good work.

There's some really awesome new drums in the ending part. Labyrinth sounds hell of a lot more catchy too.

And yeah, the Special Stages are so hard now. Never noticed the 'UP' and 'DOWN' slowed and sped up the stage in the Mega Drive release. xD

I bought the game on my Galaxy Gio and it doesn't go past the level tile screen, wasted 2.85 euros.

Should of got the apk before buying it then

So that's what made Marble Zone jibe better with me this time around! I didn't really notice or pay attention to the original track's instruments, because I found it forgettable, but thanks for the info. I'll go give it another listen. I don't see any difference between Labyrinth Zone, however. The new track is just as catchy as the original was 22 years ago, if you ask me.

My only problem with this port are the special stages. God damn, they're 10 times harder than the version of them I played in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.

The reason why the special stages seem harder is because the frame rate of the rotating maze is now super smooth.

The funny thing is, making the frame rate super smooth actually shows up/accentuates the problems the original versions of the special stage have always had. The special stages in Sonic 1 have a tricky-slightly cheap difficulty. This is because it is very hard to control Sonic's movement. Whilst you can control him to an extent, his movement seems very heavy and thus it's difficult to influence the direction you need to go. This results in you often hitting a 'goal' exit which you could/would have avoided if you had better control over Sonic.

Now you take into account how much faster the rotating maze is in the StealthTax version and you find yourself being thrown around by those red pinball spheres etc. It is now almost impossible to stop yourself from hitting a goal exit from even a great distance.

So the special stages feel even more cheap. We have the restart option which was a VERY wise move by StealthTax. Even then it's often hard to hit the pause (then restart) button if you know your about to hit a goal, because Sonic is so fast. Okay yes you can still restart the stage even after you hit a goal ring, but it's cumbersome.

What perhaps they should have done is improve your overall control of Sonic's movement. Would that have made the special stages too easy? I don't know, but it's my only slight niggle in what is a fantastic mobile release.

Indeed. I'm glad they patched up some of the frame rate issues, but the patch to that is a bit of a double edged sword. I know, challenge is nice and all, but the Special Stages in this port cross the line of " just plain cheap." I haven't even gotten the first emerald. Oh well, I was looking forward to unlocking Knuckles, but whatever.

Anyway, anyone ready to talk about the Taxman Sonic 2 remake? I'm so hyped for it! As long as he adds Hidden Palace, more multiplayer levels, and Amy Rose, I'm all good.

Playable Amy would be bitchin'. Give her the Piko-Piko Hammer and make it like Advance where she's pretty much Hard mode, and I'm set.

Hopefully they upgrade the Sonic 2 soundtrack too. I can only imagine how Aquatic Ruin, Mystic Cave and Metropolis would sound <3

While it took me a while to get used to the controls of the special stages, somehow I feel they are easier now. It might have to do that I'm used to them and what strategy to use to beat them though.

I encountered a nice bug using debug mode...I tried the debug menu using Sonic. I was in spring yard zone act 3, and I collect 999 rings and transformed into super sonic. I tried to get to the end of the level quickly using the debug mode, I reached eggman but I lost the cursor. I could still use Sonic and hear the sound of his moves but he wasn't on the screen, he was somewhere else while I was staring at eggman going around. Then I restarted the level and now I'm Super Sonic from the beginning, but with some strange differences:

- he's shiny yellow, invulnerable and super fast, and jump super high, but his model is like normal Sonic, so no spines curved up

- the ring meter doesn't exist oO

Im pretty sure someone has said this already but if you use the debug mode and select the eggman sign at the beggining of the stage and you move left, you can see extra stuff behind the start of the stage

I would love playable Amy in Sonic Advance style. I've played all the Amy MegaDrive/Genesis hacks, they gave the old games a new approach with her specific move set. Got stuck at the beginning of Hydrocity 2 for a while, for that reason, but after that it was a lot of fun!

Amy in Sonic CD would have been funny... she'd have to rescue herself from Metal Sonic.... time paradox!! biggrin.png Or even better, having to rescue Sonic! XD

It would be so utterly amazing if these were eventually amalgamated into one game with that outer menu style, and considering they all use the same engine, when they introduce new bonus characters upon a new game release they become playable in the others.  Perhaps even Knuckles in Sonic CD too.

Just completed the game with Knuckles. Got all six emeralds. Playing as Tails and Knuckles makes exploring Scrap Brain Zone a lot of fun. There are quite a few hidden surprises in Scrap Brain.

Act 1 of SB (maps from Soniczoneo)

Act 2 has a really interesting layout. On the middle of the map near the top you may notice a row of five boxes-the middle one being an extra life. Worth getting with Tails, Knuckles and S&T. There is also an extra life at the bottom-middle of the map. There is a way to get to that very small top route. I forget how though (it involves some trick with the lifts).

Act 3. The layout of this act is fascinating. It's like a giant ring. You either take the long anti-clockwise route or the massive-shortcut. There is one extra life at the bottom left of the map. Worth exploring.

I don't think StealthTax added any additional routes to Scap Brain.

In Amy hacks (for Sonic 1&2 etc) does she mainly use her hammer and has a double jump? If she was included in Sonic 2 I think she should be given a rolling motion and spindash to stop her gameplay from being to slow/stop-start.

Also, I like the idea of Hidden Palace being included. It looks like Taxman has been given much more freedom (by SEGA) to do what he wants with Sonic 1&2, than he had with Sonic CD. So there is a better chance we may get extra levels and characters in Sonic 2.

I'm having trouble finding a level with 20 rings and the extra routes in Labyrinth and Scrap Brajn 2 I'm not that good at finding them for the achievements!

Haven't been following this since it was announced, but I got it yesterday for my Galaxy S Blaze.

I'm really surprised by how well done this port was. I definitely wasn't expecting Super Sonic or hell, even the elemental shields in debug.

Quick question though, how do I unlock Tails and Knuckles? Only in Starlight Zone. I assume you beat it once for Tails?

I believe it is:

  • Unlock Tails by clearing the game with Sonic (all emeralds not needed)
  • Unlock Knuckles by beating the game with Tails and by getting all six emeralds.

That's how I did it.

Edit: Ninja'd by Spindash. You're just too fast for me.

Aye, that she does. tongue.png But that's why I like it. It forces you to play the game differently because you can't just spin and dash into things.

I have a feeling she does curl into a ball in the pinball chutes in Casino Night Zone, though...

Also daaaang, looks like I'm a long way off from unlocking Knuckles too. I finally got my first Chaos Emerald; the third one, no less! XD

She does, and she could full on spin attack in Advance 2.

If Amy were made retrospectively for a classic game though, there's a decent chance she could have a different "moveset" compared to Advance Amy, something that makes her exploration of the stage more interesting.

One thing I loved about Tails and Knuckles was they expanded Sonic stages in different ways, they encouraged the usage of alternate paths for each character, which is one of my favourite things about the whole series, and, as much as I love Amy as a character, one of the reasons she doesn't feel as useful to the series' gameplay as Tails or Knuckles.

Still, achieving that may be a bit of a tall order. Maybe there could be certain kinds of walls that only Amy could pass through, or springs or gimmicks that only her hammer could activate.

But this is all speculation. Point is, I'd love to see Amy become a valuable playable character!!

Have you heard about the debug mode trick? You can cheat like I did and play as Knuckles that way.
