Sonic Unleashed vs. Sonic Colors Extra Round - Final Thoughts

They're both pretty even in this regard but I'm again inclined to give this to Colors on a technicality more than anything since it doesn't include ugly neon photoshop filters to cover the lazy designs for the Dark Gaia enemies. Neither game really created had that much original to bring to the table and the one that stood out in Unleashed's favor was unappealing and impossible to discern.

I think overall my vote would go to Colours for both the lovingly dressed Egg Pawns and the reintroduction of classic badniks (could have done with a few more new ones too of course, but maybe I'm being biased and just remembering the remade ones because I obviously have prior nostalgia for them).

HOWEVER I way prefer the Egg Fighters to the Egg Pawns.  I like their design generally, they're way more satisfying to mow down due to their height and burly build giving them a much bigger feeling of power when you knock them flying, be it due to boost or homing attack, and, on a more personal level, I relate Egg Pawns way too much to Sonic Heroes, which is a game I really don't care much for.

Egg Robos beat both, cant beat the classics

A quality contribution to the topic of "Sonic Unleashed vs Sonic Colours".

To give Unleashed a bit of credit though, the trio of Egg Fighters in Eggmanland's hub are funny. Who could forget conversing with one of them in order to perfect it's reasoning? The other one is actually afraid of Eggman and goes on about being overworked, being unable to object to Eggman and it even begs Sonic to go and look at all of the tunnels it made in a very desperate way. Even their names are funny is the way they reference past Sonic games/consoles/years.

But then Colours has this brilliant pair.

Whenever Cubot opened his mouth it was comical. Mobster, pirate, cowboy XD The notion of Eggman taking out his voice chip because he was so annoying is a pretty funny notion. Orbot's snark was always awesome. The characters work so well together.

I think the best one was the XB-06 or whatever it was called. The fact they were poking fun at Sonic 06 was really grand, and showed the different tone the games were taking in trying to finally repair Sonic's reputation.

What's really concerning is the fact those robots were sentient... or at least had some semblance of it. Kind of makes you wonder about all the ones Sonic's killed...

But yes. There was a lot of humor in Unleashed, and that's a trait that continued into Colors. The robots are just so childish in both titles, and despite its flaws Unleashed at least had a more innovative approach to the robots than prior titles.

Sonic Colours is far, far, far, FAR better than Unleashed.

Leaving aside the Werehog and Hub worlds, which fatally cripple Unleashed, Colours' levels scorch the levels in Unleashed.

Unleashed Sonic has a bizarre homing attack that can only be used when locking on to the enemy. Not only does this completely stop the air dash but the homing attack is on THE SAME BUTTON AS BOOST. Whoever thought that was a good idea deserves a slap. I cannot tell you how many times I fell to my death because I boosted when I didn't keep the lock on cursor on an enemy.

The level design is also extremely poor, the game basically acts as a punishing trial and error as you run down a corridor and fall into unpredictable pits of death or run into an enemy.

Colours has much better control and level design than Unleashed. In my opinion, it's not even up for a serious debate. And this is talking about the best part of the game!

Generations massively improved over the Unleashed formula. In fact, it doesn't get enough credit in this regard.

No offense, but the current topic right now is on ENEMY DESIGN.

The way this topic is structured is that each week we will discuss 3 small things for both games, and then one big thing on the 4th week, and then decide which game does better for what.

Right now it's ENEMY DESIGN, which includes the badniks from Colors and the various badniks and Dark Gaia creatures from Unleashed.

Read the topic better.  We're discussing each of the games elements one by one to appreciate what each one individually did well, since general discussions of the games as a whole tend to get unfocused fast.

EDIT: Apologies, speeded by a lot.  That's what I get for chatting on skype every 10 words while typing a post lol.

I guess that means my scorching of the flaws of both games' stories later on are going to cause a shitstorm biggrin.png.

Took Grumpy Old Man's suggestion and changed the topic title to the current topic so new people won't get confused.

Haha that's not so much a problem.  I think focusing the topic is a great idea because all the time Unleashed vs Colours debates collapse into comparisons of unrelated things.  "Unleashed had more cinematic level design!"  "Yes but it had medal hunting".  "Colours had a funnier script!"  "Yes but it had too many 2D sections".  Etc etc.

Hmmm.... I haven't even played Colors yet, but I think I'll give enemy design to that game. The robots in Unleashed just seemed.... bland. Seriously, short round robots with no face is just.... bland. Colors gave us back the egg pawns, who always put a smile on my face with their vibrant orange hue, giddy grin, and plump weight!

I like the charm that BOTH sets of bots being, although I think colours steals it for me. They seem to fit the setting much more, the happy smiley egg pawns seem right at home In a theme park (I can imagine they'd fit in Carnival Night/Casino Night). The different outfits are quirky and well thought out and are quite whimsical. So yeah, while the Egg Fighters are great enemies I just love the Egg Pawns from colours.

Also doesn't it seem like Eggman just went through his warehouse and booted up all the old bots he had lying around to fill up the parks? Lol!

Is it okay to use generations use of both enemies? Cause if it is, I would love to point out the use of the egg chaser at the end of classic sonics rooftop run. It's just hilariously cute the way it was stuck and trying to get away. I actually felt sorry for killing it.lol! That just shows that the unleashed enemies can be used creatively.

I think the enemies in Unleashed are alright, a bit generic but alright. I did like the robots in Eggmanland's hub though because they're a nice reference to Sonic's history and they were pretty funny too.

But I have to go with Colours, simply because there's a greater variety of both old and new enemies in that game. It was SO good to see those cute little Eggpawn's again. I love those guys! And it's so CUTE how they all wear different accessories in each stage depending on the theme. ^u^

I was really surprised when I first played the game and spotted so many classic enemies, with a small redesign but still very similar to the classics like Crabmeat, Grounder (I know, he's called Mole =P) and the Buzzbomber. They were great and really suited the whole atmosphere of the game.

Hrmn, another hard one.

Egg Pawns vs Egg Fighters...I really didn't like the Egg Pawns when they first started showing up. They just seemed like lamer versions of Eggrobo, and since they were practically the only thing you fought for most of the game...but, that was Heroes. In Colors they did a lot to make them likable; I'm still not a big fan of the base design, but they had unique costumes for each stage, and more interesting animations than the originals. The Egg Fighters are maybe a little bland, but I kind of like the design, at least compared to the Pawns.

The other robots...well, Colors' returning badniks are nice, but nothing we haven't seen before. Unleashed...most I don't particularly care for, though I did like the little fire/ice/wind spewing guys. Unleashed also had the Dark Gaia monsters...but I really can't think of anything to say about them. Not bad, but not notably good either.

I think I'll just call this one a tie...

Now this is an easy one for me.

My vote definitely goes to Colors' enemy designs for this one. I love the Egg Pawns because of their themed outfits in each section of the park especially the Samurais in Aquarium Park, these themed outfits just made this game for me. Then we've got the return of the animal based badniks. Yeah maybe they're not exactly original but I've always liked their designs over generic robots and I like the way they celebrate when they hit you.

Unleashed's enemy designs were just boring and immemorable for me, aside from the blue Egg Fighters, those are cool. I honestly cannot bring myself to remember any other of Eggman's robots though maybe it would've helped if we weren't blasting right through them 90% of the time but that's a whole other issue. As for Dark Gaia spawns... I remember the Titans and a bunch of other smaller blobs of blue fuzz...and that's it. Oh yeah and the annoying bees.

One issue both games face is that none of the enemies really present a threat and are really just boost fodder, well aside from if you're the Werehog.

Colors.

Oh yeah I completely forgot about those round elemental blowing robots. Those were adorable. The little animations like the ballerina spin really just sold them to me as one of my favorite badniks! Thy could so be used in more games!

As much as I like Unleashed's line up of bots, I have to give the nod to Colors. While it lacked many new types of of enemies instead choosing to re-up some classics, you got to give them credit on implementation. The motobug in particular shined in its usage. It was completely refreshing to see an old face used in such an inventive way - and it was nice to go toe to toe with a badnik that you didn't have to run through at 200 mph. Furthermore, the EggPawns got a face lift, and reprized their role as Eggy's chief ground forces.

Both games had awesome little victory animations for most of the bots, so its a draw there, but I think between the motobugs and the stage specific tailored bots in Colors, I gotta give that game the leg up in this department.

I loved Colors' enemy designs. The variety in the Egg Pawns was an amazing design choice and the updated Badniks were pretty cool. Plus, the enemies were actually a threat as opposed to an obstacle. Slower movement may have diminished the spectacle a little, but the enemies actually stand a fair enough chance that way.

In Unleashed, while Eggman's bots had a lot of personality to them, the Gaia things were just... bleh. They looked pretty generic, to me. Plus, in Unleashed the enemies felt like they were just there to look good when you boost through them. The only ones that felt like an actual threat were the ones that could knock you off of a building at Night time. Although again, the Egg Fighters had a lot of personality to them and their movements, while Colors' bots looked the part, there wasn't a lot beneath.

Colors wins it again, although I really appreciate Unleashed ditching the health bars (mooooost of the time) and making it so the enemies had to actually attack to do damage. The only problem is that this removed the threat entirely...

I think Colors is a clear winner here. Unleashed had all of two enemy types: the Egg Fighters and the Dark Gaia enemies, some small, some just a bit taller than Sonic, some that are huge (which are usually minibosses), and some that fly. By bringing back all the badniks, Colors, though not being completely original, had a cornucopia enemies to offer; the various level-themed Egg Pawns (good move on the developers' part, btw), Jaws, Burrowbots, the shark badniks from Hydrocity, Motobugs, and some others I can't recall atm.

Going back to the level-themed Egg Pawns, I love how they all have their own unique way of attacking you. The Tropical Resort guys will bash you with their welcome signs, the Starlight Carnival guys will use their trombones (I love the little horn stab that plays when they attack, too), the Aquarium park guys will uses swords, etc. It just adds a lot more personality to the game and helps with the whole "theme park" setting.

Also, you gotta love how they have you race a bunch of Motobugs.

In Unleashed, all the enemies are the same dull, gray Egg Fighters. There's also some kind of electric homing attack thingy in Holoska, but I don't think that shows up anywhere else. In the Night stages, you get - along with more Egg Fighters - three types of Dark Gaia enemies: the small blobby guys, the taller, sleeker guys, the big minibosses at the end of some levels, and the guys that fly and strike Sonic from above. These may seem like a lot of different types of enemies, but for the most part, you'll be fighting the first two types and the Egg Fighters. Plus, the Dark Gaia enemies all look so similar to each other that they just blend in. They're all the same purple-ish blue-ish color, and none of them are unique or exclusive to certain levels except for the flying types, which I think only show up in Mazuri. I do like their death animations, though, especially the Egg Fighters; when you kill them, they do this really over-the-top death pose, waving their hands in the air and falling to their knees. That's kinda cool. Other than that, though, these enemies are just very bland. (Plus, I swear when I was playing one of the day stages, I just walked into an Egg Fighter and killed it.)

So yeah, like I said before, Colors wins.
