Alright, so I've went and played my copy of Mario Kart Wii, to see how much credence the whole "Mario Kart" cone thing has.

Interesting results.....to summarize what I'm seeing so far, the two games have subtle differences that add up into two very different games. For Mario Kart Wii, I went and used the Gamecube controller for the most part.

Mario Kart is a very slow racer. Even the fastest racers are still incredibly slow for a racing game. The drifts, while they do have the charge feature that ASR has, only charge up to a second level, and provide considerably less speed and are over a lot quicker. The courses themselves are also not designed for drifting in the same way ASR is. There are some obvious places where your supposed to drift, but I find that a lot of turns are simply more practical to take by just turning the steering wheel. Really, I found myself relying more heavily on items more then anything else.

In fact, I always say that on Mario Kart Wii doesn't win the best player, but the luckiest player. -_-U So, if you have luck, you win, simple as that. Four more rivals than any other Mario Kart means that you have four more guys throwing things to you, and also, more items like the cloud and the POW-block, makes Mario Kart Wii a game that skills don't count anything. It's precisely the principal reason (or at least one of them) for me liking ASR instead of MKWii.

Just a quick note about the PlayStation3 version using SIXAXIS...

For the love of goodness, if you're wanting to use the motion-sensitive control configuration (Config. E) then do it from the very beginning! After playing the game for over four hours since Thursday with Config. A, and using the left stick to steer, turning on the SIXAXIS and steering was utterly abysmal! The drift feels totally wrong and I absolutely got slaughtered, even with an All-Star Move jumping me up to second place on the final lap of Whale Lagoon. It'll either be one or t'other for most gamers!

I'm sure 'tis decent, but it takes some serious getting used to, and is like a totally new game engine when turned on. Be warned!

What really annoyed me about the items was how many far reaching items there are.

In ASR, you can quite litterally just drive out of the range of any items. If manage to get far enough ahead, no items can touch you, and it's only your own screw ups that'll do you in.

In Mario Kart, there are many items that effect everyone on the track; like the POW and lightning items. The blue shell exists specifically to PUNISH the leader, no matter how far ahead he may be.

In ASR, there are ways to counter items. There are ways to remain unaffected by items. In MK, when your in the lead, all you really get are weak offensive weapons. In ASR, shields are your most common item in first place, meaning people behind you can't just nuke you with items. You can also counter incoming weapons by firing back at them.

It's a much more balanced experience.

Edit: Ah, S0L. I see ya lurking down there. Ristar please? :(

I've been playing this game since this afternoon. I went straight online as my LIVE runs out soon, and I've found that online play has it's problems. Nope, there's nothing wrong with the game or the internet, but the players. I've won nearly every game I've joined online, and I've even tried playing as all characters in an attempt to increase the difficulty. I'm constantly being kicked. After I've won 3 races in a row I get kicked, sometimes even after one race. Sonic Is Cool44 was the first to kick me after I beat him fairly, and since then, I've recieved A LOT of hate messages from players telling me "you're shit sell your game" and such. On a positive note, I have had around 22 friend requests today lol My gamertag name doesn't help, so for a laugh I've changed it to "SEGA EUROPE REP" to see how people react.

All in all though I am having a lot of fun.

Like playing with friends? EEE! I need to grab it if it does! :D

Well, like I said, I only glanced at the back of the box (checking out the graphics of the different versions), so double-check with a major games website and/or somebody who is playing the game on the Nintendo DS before spending your cash... but yeah, I remember noting the wi-fi and multiplayer functions. Icons on the top-left of the back of the box, right?

Has anyone else on the 360 version noticed wider karts like Ulala's hovercraft and Eggmans Eggmobile sometimes get stuck on edges of corners?

Though ASR I think some items for people in Certain places need tweaking... I got Triple Rockets while in first yesterday 2 times. How is that fair to anyone who wants to pass me? (Or get closer since I can fire them backwards as well)

Oh and I'm positive something is wrong with me Selecting Forklift Ryo when someone has Bike Ryo chosen. I made a Lobby Yesterday which had one person and they selected Ryo at that point I didn't know which Ryo it was, but I couldn't select either of them. (Both Crossed out) Then in the race turns out it was Bike Ryo. >.>

It was a 1 v 1 race so no chance someone "Magically" had Forklift Ryo selected.

@nuckles.

Very good analyzing you have done there. I was also planning to compare the 2 games to see what was so different. I remembered that mario kart did have a lot of variation of courses, which also is the only plus I think mario kart has compared to ASR.

If only asr also had that, than it would be the perfect kart game. I just know the addition of more stages(for example a scrap brain, or a stage from space channel or ristar)would make ASR the best kart game.

Wow, two days absent and this thread explodes. Only just caught up.

Absolutely in love with this game. Rocky Coaster is probably my favorite track, visually. I've never been a fan of the Samba de Amigo games themselves, but the diverse style they provide is completely charming.

Only real glitches or frustrations I've come across have been on the Casino stages, where hitting a bump on the upside-downy roads or 90 degree downward angles going a certain speed sends me flying wildly, vertically off-track and knocks me immediately into 7th or 8th place. Game has also frozen up on me a couple of times, but I attribute that more to my Xbox than to the game itself. Poor thing's getting up there in age.

The months and months of hype and waiting have paid off in full. Thank you and your team at SUMO, Steve, for making a truly great kart racer. That's my own, personal favorite kind of game, and you hit all the right marks in making a racer that's stays consistently fun and challenging. (Monkey Target completely destroyed me on my first lap, that winding climb at the tail-end is brutal... so it was intensely satisfying to master the feather-drift technique and nail it by the third lap.)

Very, VERY much looking forward to more downloadable content to add to an already wonderful game. You certainly have my dollars dedicated to whatever it is you guys have up your sleeves.

ALSO: I love that each track also gets its own description, which leads me to a question for all you eagle-eyes out there: Dark Arsenal's description says something along the lines of "look out for an old friend/familiar face patrolling the track!" I'm paraphrasing. I certainly can't remember seeing anyone other than Eggman's robots, so I'm hoping I've just been too focused on drifting and keeping ahead of the pack each time to notice a hidden cameo. Anyone know what/who this might be referring to? (If I see Metal Sonic in there floating about I'm going to lose my mind.)

People having trouble with the Ghost Master achievement on 360: did you get the day-one title update? It should fix that problem. If not, don't worry, there's another patch in the works.

The Crush 40 song isn't a new one, but one from their first album. It was called Into...something or other. I'm sure Crush 40 buffs will know what I'm talking about.

Also, Knuckles's All Star move is effin AWESOME. Forget S3K and Sonic Heroes, THIS is Super Knuckles, as far as I'm concerned.

No Aquaslash in the name, just 'Into the Wind'. ;) ;)

From the looks of things, did Sonic's ASM change between now and the demo? He seems a fair amount faster. And Knuckles move really is brilliant.

Looks like one country had the Ryo-F code given away in-store in a fancy folder thingy -

Yeah I got that with my preorder (Game Spain), the artwork with all the characters is pretty nice :D

That screen is also from a spanish version (seeing that all the menus are in spanish)
