Defenders of Cream unite! Why should she get the pointy end of the stick?

I am writing this article for the SSMB to express my awareness on the treatment of new characters in the Sonic Universe, and mainly Cream. I, like many SSMB members, read Dread's recent article, cleverly titled "Night of the Living Dead (and characters)" and found it to be a fantastic article, reflecting on the death of Shadow and how his return in Sonic Heroes and Sonic Battle (but mainly Heroes) spawned much controversy, confusion and disappointment. I agree with how people said that Shadows return destroyed SA2:B's epic ending, but after reading the topic, people also started bashing characters such as Cream.

The first question I asked myself when I saw a topic called Cream vs Shadow was : "Why Cream?" I soon found out that the main reason for people blasting things at her was because she was a new character. Ouch! Now, I know that the Sonic Universe has many characters, but just because someone is new, it doesn't mean that that we shouldn't accept them. But that doesn't seem to matter to some people.

Another reason people were saying Cream wasn't worthy to be in the Sonic Universe was because of her annoying voice. Well now, if an annoying voice is a good cause to dispose of a character, then Tails would have been bricked many ages ago. But why did we keep Tails then? Tails was a great character that was unique in many ways. I find Cream to be unique. Yes she can fly, and many people accuse her of copying Tails, but Rouge can fly, as can Charmy (That cursed bee!), so why don't we just toss them too?

Yet another reason as to why people want Cream out of the picture reflects upon the fact that we don't have a solid background for her. She lives with her mom and her friend Cheese. She is very fond of her friends and mother and will do whatever she can to help them. What more can you tell people? Not much else, so we should trash her. So we don't know much about her. Sonic doesn't have a solid background either, and look at him. He's the big cheese! The hero, the one! I haven't heard anyone try to get rid of him!

So the main reason people want to say bye to Cream has to be because Cream is a new character. Saying we should get rid of her because she's new isn't a valid reason in my opinion. I remember when Sonic Battle was coming out, and the first screens of Emerl were found, people were saying "Aww cripes! A stupid new robot! It's gonna suck!". Well, I don't know about anyone else, but playing Sonic Battle was tons of fun for me (despite it's strange gameplay style) and Emerl was hilarious with his weird slang talk. If Emerl was blasted for being a new character, and was never created, then nobody would have ever experienced the funny things that Emerl did. Of course, Emerl did die in the end, but he had a good run (Let's hope Sonic Team doesn't make him pull a Shadow eh?). So if Emerl was a new character, and he was fun, then why do people say that Cream should go without giving her a chance?

All New Characters, or just Cream?

Nowadays, if you look up Shadow on the SSMB, you will find many topics about how horrible the returned Shadow is. But if you look back to before anyone even knew about Sonic Heroes, back to when SA2:B was the newest thing on the Sonic market, you will find many topics about the coolness of Shadow. Nobody dared say a bad thing about him without the risk of being flamed. So I have to ask : "Why didn't people blast Shadow because he was new?" Many people said he was really cool. Nowadays people are saying he's just a Sonic phony. I wish people would make up their minds.

So now I'm kinda confused here. People didn't care that Shadow was new, and they liked him despite the fact that he was described as a Sonic phony, yet people don't like Cream because she's new, and don't like her because she has 1 thing in common with Tails, she can fly. People! She doesn't even use a similar technique to fly! She flaps, he propells! I am seeing no logic in some people's decisions to get rid of Cream.

Dread's article "Night of the Living Dead" also mentioned that Cream was "useless". He then apologized to Cream fans. Apology accepted I suppose, but your wrong. Cream isn't really useless, it's just Sonic Team aren't giving her any uses. I'm sure that if Sonic Team were to put Cream into a good situation, people would show more respect for the young rabbit.

Conclusion

Well, there's not much more that I can really say without repeating myself, so I'm going to close this article with the following : People, please give Cream and other new characters a chance. I know people don't like characters such as Shadow as much anymore because he was supposed to have died in SA2. I know many people dislike the Chaotix because they simply returned out of nowhere. Those are all good reasons. But why hate Cream? Why get rid of a new character when you're giving older characters a second chance? You give Shadow a second chance, yet you won't really give Cream a first chance. Try and look back into your own life for a second. Is there anything you didn't give a chance, and when it was gone, you regretted it so much?

For example, this happened to me. A kid in my old school, who I'll call Bob, was a kid who had no friends. One day, he asked me if I could "hang out" with him. I told him I couldn't, despite the fact that I could have "hung out" with him. The person got into a car crash that night. I never saw Bob again. Not a day goes by that I don't wonder what Bob was like, how much fun he could have been, what kind of a person he was. So people, if there's something new, such as Cream, don't shun it aside right away. Give it a chance. It could be one of the best things you'll do in your life.
