2/2/24 - Orion and the Dark Review

This may be another subject matter than the ones I usually cover here, but don't worry; a game review of The Legend of Zelda: The Mininsh Cap is coming soon! I just have to beat it first.

NOTE: THERE WILL BE SPOILERS. IF YOU WANT A SPOILER-FREE SUGGESTION, WATCH ONLY SELECT BITS OF IT. ONLY WATCH THE SEGMENTS WITH DARK AND SKIP THE OTHERS. AT A CLEAR END OF DARK, LEAVE THE MOVIE. UNHIDE SPOILERS FOR THE REVIEW.

Spoiler

I liked the beginning of the movie. it portrayed anxiety and fear pretty well. Then, it showed Orion as an adult coming up with the story... a bit iffy, but alright I guess? I didn't like it, but I guess it wasn't the worst ever. It did make it harder for me to like the characters because it made them feel less real than they already were, so I didn't care as much. every time I got mildly invested, it would yank me out and tell me how fake and pointless it all was. Then hypatia enters the story and... what? They're just searching for an excuse to keep it going. I never felt any sort of deep meaning after they entered the dream. Hypatia's poem was good, but her being there wasn't satisfying for the tale. Sure, it explains why she's there (she came up with a way to continue it) but it made little sense for the actual story of Orion and Dark. then time travel gets involved and this is when everything really derails. They introduce this whole thing with time monsters that feel pointless due to them being there for a minute, and it makes no sense. The whole plot goes wild after this part. Apparently, Hypatia was telling a story of Orion telling a story. What...? Then it shows Sally and Orion at the planetarium for a split second. Yes, it was kind of obvious Orion marries Sally, but if you haven't figured that out, it is really confusing. It can indicate Orion finally getting over his fear[s], but it is so short that it doesn't feel meaningful. The movie has some neat parts and some pretty insightful/meaningful moments, but the plot gets so messed up that it ruins it. Tt ditches the moral and meaning to make it longer. Overall, it started nice but then became useless. I am disappointed. I suggest watching only the beginning, skipping all Hypatia segments, and stopping when Dark dies. it may not be a satisfying ending, but it's much better than the sour taste it left in my mouth.
