  • Alyla Browne Confirms She's Been Cast As Maria Robotnik

Browne jokes about the inevitable fate of her character.

A few weeks ago Alyla Browne was cast in the Sonic 3 movie, and we speculated that, being a blonde-haired girl, she was almost certainly playing Shadow's deceased best friend, Maria Robotnik. Jokes from Sonic fans being excited for her character's impending demise became a relatively popular meme on social media in afterwards. Well, today, Browne decided to get in on the fun on Instagram, while also confirming her role in the movie:

Who knew a jacket could make such a convincing-looking body bag?

While not surprising, it does seem like we're now well into the process of figuring out who in the cast is playing what. Will Rouge be in this movie? Will Shadow be played by a professional voice actor or a celebrity? We'll be finding out all this before in the coming moths.

And come December, we'll all get to see how Shadow's story is brought to screen and, yes, also how a PG movie franchise where Sonic flosses will shoot a child.

Odd, I was thinking about Shadow saying that exact word several minutes ago.

Makes you wonder what poor Maria did to those people to deserve this. LOL Yeah, I’m just kidding around.

Yeah. I do believe that Alyla Browne is most likely will be playing as Maria Robotnik. Also, we might gonna get "PG-13" rating on Sonic movie 3 release because of Shadow's past scene where Maria got shot and especially minor swear words like "Where's that 'damn' fourth Chaos Emerald?".

As a representative of the weeb conglomerate and citzen of latin heritage, I hope Paramount take our ideals into account and makes her say "Adios" instead of "Sayonara", just like the creators intended.

The more I think about this, I wonder if Maria is going to die at all? It'd make sense for her to considering that's Shadow's whole shtick of being unable to move past some girl's death from a century or so ago, but it's interesting they're hiring an actual well known actor for a role that could easily be filled with some literal who actor for their 20 second spotlight for the sake of setting up a backstory. What are the odds Shadow really is just a backstory-less goon (or creation, whatever) for Eggman until Maria helps him have a change of heart, leading to his eventual neutral-leaning placement?

It would be deviating a lot from the actual story as told through the games, as if somehow that hasn't already been the case with these movies, but it could be a different spin on the whole Maria/Shadow dynamic.

What are the odds she has a much bigger presence in this movie than expected? What are the odds the writers decide NOT to give sonic fans what they crave through seeing a child get shot on screen?

Personally, I think Maria may die but in a very different way. If the gunshot scene isn't used, she could die from her own terminal illness at the beginning of the movie, making Gerald become mentally unstable due to strong feelings of guilt (his life's work couldn't cure her at all) and, consequently, affecting Shadow's memories as well.

They also could involve GUN in some way, making them the main reason of Maria's illness.

When the first two films came out, we didn't have to worry about them straying from the original source material (since the games the film adapted didn't have much in terms of story and dialogue). But now Paramount has decided to enter the era of games that have long since had cinematic plot/dialogue, with Sonic Adventure 2 being one of the most acclaimed plots in the franchise. I can only imagine how this retelling (among other SA2 retellings) will turn out, especially with this being the third film of of a divisive franchise and during a post-Hollywood strike no less.

This is me being civil BTW.

But nice to know that this age of the internet (memes, bad comedy, trolling, and mean-spirited cynicism) treats the death of a young and gentle female (especially with the impact that shaped one of the most brooding/vengeful video game anti-heroes) with such deep respect and tastefulness.

Dead girl = Bodybag peacesigns!? Shadow must be having a good day.
