Jim Carrey Is (Once Again) the Eggman in Paramount's Sonic 3

This morning, Variety has reported that Jim Carrey will again be donning the iconic goggles, mustache, and ego as he officially returns to the role as Dr. Robotnik in Paramount's upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film. Carrey stands as one of the most memorable performances across both movies, emphasizing the "mad" in his mad scientist title. However, even as early as the second film, Carrey presented his continued involvement with the series as tenuous, highlighting that he doesn't often do sequels, and jumping in and out of retirement.

This falls in line with prior storyboard leaks [potential spoilers in link] that heavily suggested his return, and comes as we're getting further rumors that Krysten Ritter could join the cast.

Yep, it is official! He is back and playing the big bad once again. Question is, I wonder what is next for him after the movie, given, you know, the retirement thing?

It's highly likely this is his last film, which would be funny.

I was thinking that, actually. Maybe they could have something happen to Eggman so that they could properly replace Jim in who plays him next film, if there is a next Sonic film.

I already said my piece in the status updates so I'll bite my tongue here.

All I'll say is that if Agent Stone doesn't return there'll be sadness all around.

I'm hoping this is the last film to close out on a trilogy, but that depends entirely on the film's success....

Yeah, all good things must come to an end, eventually.

That said, Jim said when saying he was retiring that he'd do one more movie like a third Sonic movie if the script was good.

With that said, everyone...

I think this movie might be good!

  • The title was changed to Jim Carrey is (Once Again) the Eggman in Paramount's Sonic 3

Ooh, I can't wait for that first trailer. Seeing Jim Carrey as Eggman one last time would be fantastic. Even if not, he had a great run with both Sonic 1 and 2.

Thank god, I would have hated if the Eggman got scrambled after a fall. Imagine ending his character like THAT.

Bravo Jim Carrey

After all the "will he/won't he" speculation, I'm glad we finally have confirmation of his return.

Maybe they could finally give him that fatsuit he always wanted!

Did anyone really have any doubt? I'm sure even if Jim didn't plan to come back for another sequel, Paramount threw more money at him until he reconsidered.

And if this does happen to be his final film, what an honor to be able to say he decided to make Dr. Robotnik the final performance of his career. This will also mark the first time in his career he's ever played the same character in three films.

Prior to some of the leaks, it was still very possible they could make Shadow the primary antagonist and/or make Agent Stone a more prominent character. Carrey is... a weird guy. To say the least. And it's no promise that he wouldn't stay true to his threats of retirement or ask for more than Paramount is willing to pay. They will have had to keep a Plan B.

Unless the film does badly, I doubt that will be the case. Paramount has a streaming service and they want big IPs that provide constant content that they can use to convince customers to keep paying monthly.

Still though, in some way, it could be good to try and wrap this up as a trilogy. Give Eggman a proper exit, rather than some ambiguous fate like at the end of Sonic 2. If James Marsden wants to leave, perhaps this would be a good time for Sonic having to grow up a bit, and at the end of the film, he leaves Tom's house, hits the road with his friends, and starts to become more of the confident hero Sonic we know in the games. Make it feel like things are moving forward in the universe.

Also if I had to guess, depending on how that Knuckles TV show does, I have no doubt that they'll be considering a Shadow TV spin-off. If Knuckles is popular enough to justify it, Shadow definetly is.

I'm also really hoping they give Eggman a good ending this time, because I was terrified Carrey wouldn't be back and we would be left with that, but I also assume he was already planned to be back (we knew from the leaks), and there was some kind of 3 movie contract I assume, back when he signed for Sonic 1. Same for Marsden and Schwartz.

So glad he's back one more time. Having Carrey, an icon of the 90s, voice another icon of the 90s was just perfect casting. I mean...maaaaybe Danny Devito would have been a better "fit." But Carrey nails it.

Getting Carrey for the last film and this one was already a huge gamble. He's one of the backbones of this film franchise and I can see the quality suffering when he inevitably steps down.

The smart thing to do if they plan on continuing is give Robotnik a proper send off and soft reboot the series so they can hire a new actor.

I don't think we'll see the end of Movie Sonic with Sonic 3 but it does feel like the natural spot the close the current status quo and make any changes needed to keep it going. I think Carrey is very unlikely to come back a 4th time if the 3rd movie sufficiently lets him sign off.

I could see a 4th movie going fully-animated like the bonus short made for the 2nd movie, soft reboot with the existing characters.

Never in doubt.

Although if there is a 4th....i'm not so sure he will be in it.

I'm glad that Jim returns as Dr. Eggman, the role suits him very well, I know he will do an excellent job and I wish him the best.

I wouldn’ count on it if I were you. Villains to have a good ending, I don’t reckon Sega would allow it. They only allow good endings for the heroes. It’s how they’ve been doing it over the years.

I wonder if there’ll be a fourth film to the trilogy, if Jim Carry doesn’t retire of course. Don’t get me wrong, I love Jim Carry, but I’m still betting on Sonic to defeat Robotnik again. The sequel wasn’t based on the games directly so I won’t expect the third film to be either.

If the third film has a post credit scene, it would bring a message that there’s another sequel coming.

Is this the first time he has done a role more than twice?

You really couldn't have had the film without him. He’s the Eggman we didn't know we needed and has fuelled the first two movies with his trademark chaotic style.

The best news!!

Yes. He has only reprised roles for a sequel twice. Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber
