  • RUMOR: Sonic Generations-Related Announcement Coming Soon (UPDATE: State of Play Confirmed)

Sonic's 20th anniversary classic might be making a return.

UPDATE 1/29/2024: A State of Play has been announced, which lends much more credibility to this rumor.

In the latest of what has been a surprisingly fruitful month for reportable rumors, it appears Sonic Generations may be getting some kind of announcement in the coming days at a currently-unconfirmed Playstation State of Play digital event. This rumor comes courtesy of of XboxEra co-founder/podcast co-host Nick Baker, who posted a cryptic tweet on his Twitter account:

    IMG_2137.thumb.jpeg.183656b84a8ba0370042ceca63162d5d.jpeg

"Sonic will live in the shadow of his generation" could mean a few things, but "Sonic Generations port" seems to be the most obvious takeaway. Alternatively, it could be something that involves Shadow in some way. We do know a Shadow skin is coming to Superstars, though that would be a rather modest thing to include in a list of games. If I personally had to guess, it's a Sonic Generations remaster for modern platforms that adds Shadow as a playable character.

Now, you're probably asking "Nuckles, why are you giving this guy the time of day," at least if your treating this as skeptically as you should any rumor. Well, it's because Baker has done this before. Last September, he posted cryptic hints of an upcoming State of Play, and was one-hundred-percent accurate. As he mentions in the Twitter exchange posted above, he seems to get lists on some of the featured games ahead of time. This is what he posted last year:

As always, this is a rumor, so don't take it as news. Nothing has been confirmed. But as far as rumors go, this is one I feel more inclined to believe. So, we may be getting some sort of Sonic game announcement in the coming days, from an upcoming State of Play. If a State of Play is announced in the next couple days, we'll be sure to update this post. If this rumor ends up being true, be sure to stay tuned to Sonic Stadium for future updates.

The only reason I’m not all that interested in possible dlc/extra levels is that you know the level design quality and graphical drop off would be insane. Gens levels are so well designed and visually dynamic that when the DLC levels just end up being more of Forces-type design it’ll be a massive blue ball.

if you wanna add content without doing much work just have the 3DS version be playable

Yes I will pay some money to not deal with my dodgy PS3 drive to replay generations.

Pretty much, but what's interesting is that a level like Planet Wisp for both modern and classic sonic in Generations already stood out pretty bad compared to the other pretty decent previous 8 levels. If we get new dlc levels (which is like a 1% possible chance) I'm expecting them to be more Planet Wisp.

I really just want them to make a bundle with both Unleashed and Generations for console and PC at this point. Put in some silly bells and whistles if you want, I just want an official way to play Unleashed

I really hope this is real. I’ve been wanting a Gens remaster for about ten years now at this point, ever since remasters on PS4 became a thing. Steam is pretty borked, especially on Steam Deck, and Xbox 360 has glitches due to the 60fps patch being unintended. Would be nice just to be able to buy it on my PS5 at 4K/60fps and enjoy it whenever.

(also perfect timing for the 52 game challenge’s special challenge, if it drops around that time).

In my heart of hearts I know I would be disappointed with anything that doesn't add new levels to play, but I'd love Generations on Switch regardless.  The dream would be two new sets of zones based on Sonic 4 Ep 2, Lost World, Mania, Forces, Frontiers and Superstars - only Mania would require the visuals to be built from total scratch, but I appreciate even then that's a tall order if this would be a stop-gap project with a relatively small budget.

I’d love to see Generations on Switch, too! I’ve not actually had the chance to play Generations before. Given the rumors that the Switch is nearing the end of its time for new releases, it makes sense for Sonic Team to try and fit one more release onto it, and a popular game like Generations would be a good fit.

Weird way to interpret their post, they were simply saying that in their imagination, a Frontiers level could be a standard A to B Sonic level based off the open zone environments.  They never said a linear level can't have branching paths or that linear levels were bad?

I think if the weird-ass and challenging level design of the Frontiers DLC is anything to go by, there's no reason to assume added levels would be naff, it just entirely depends on who is handling them.  We've never really had a 3D Sonic port/remaster with added levels in anything close to recency to really give any inkling.

I'd like the 3DS version to be included for preservations' sake, but they'd need to at least dig into it and probably remove the multiplayer and streetpass stuff even if it was an emulation - and getting a 3DS emulator running on a multiplatform release might be a hefty development challenge as is.  Probably not a simple porting job.

And even then... if the idea of that serving to provide "extra content" when development of new levels could do the same... I'd rather risk the new levels.  I like Generations 3DS, it's an okay game, and I can have the experience of playing it alongside the HD version whenever I like - I often have (playing every level across the two games in chronological order for funsies), and the overall experience becomes less enjoyable whenever I'm on the 3DS version because it just isn't as good!

Put the 3ds version in as a bonus...like Game Gear games in origins. Brilliant idea!!

I'm all in favour of preservation, I just point-blank assume that SEGA wouldn't even consider this.

...I'm hoping that Switch 2 will have official tate mode, to facilitate DS and 3DS ports without extensive reworking.

Just fix the bugs in the Steam version and port that, Sega. Thanks. None of that additional crap you dumped on top of with Colours, which Generations doesn't need in the first place. This is a game from deep into the PS360 generation where already so long as a game had a good art style it looks basically the same as a game as today (just at a lower resolution and a shittier framerate).

If this rumor turns out to be true, I'm kind of concerned about having another remaster of an older Sonic game because lately, SEGA hasn't been doing a good job with remasters of older Sonic games like Sonic Colors and Sonic Origins and I'm worried that they will mess up Sonic Generations as well.  Let's hope SEGA learns their lesson this time around and actually make a good remaster of an older Sonic game.

Colors remaster made very questionable changes, but besides that, I found it criminal that there were no new characters and especially new stages, I thought they wanted to add more meat with the Rival Rush mode which was eventually scrapped in part, and they just decided to have those 6 races against Metal Sonic, I think there was supposed to be more like an online component that used the icons from the shop, playable Metal Sonic, more races... meh, it was lame, so if they think they can make another remaster without proper new content, they should reconsider.

Also, if there was some Shadow episode mode, do you think there would be a new character equivalent to Classic Sonic? If Shadow plays like Modern Sonic, not sure... also, Generations (stages but missions too) was stupidly easy, a new mode I would hope is more challenging, I don't care if people complained about Update 3 and Superstars bosses, I'd rather have that than a very easy game like Generations, so I hope to have a challenge if they had more stuff.

Another bummer in the game, that could hypothetically fixed is: more cutscenes for the secondary cast, they barely talk in the game, I'm not sure it would be possible to get that large of a cast again for bonus content but I would definitely like that. Big was also supposed to be in the original game, Kyle Hebert was credited after all...

Keeping expectations in check, not asking for new zones, or new characters aside from Shadow, but a "hard mode" of some kind would be welcome. Although if there is a new difficulty, they should at least try to balance it properly and not make it ridiculously hard either.

Getting the game on modern platforms, presumably including a handheld version via Switch, and updating the internals to better suit modern PC hardware is definitely reason enough for a re-release of some sort.

I don't think it's a done deal that some sort of Shadow content is in there, even if the re-release does indeed exist. If he is being added as a playable character I think it'll be akin to Episode Shadow from Forces. I would like them to use Shadow to give us a real optional challenge to the gens stages and make the ranking system far stricter. If they want some Shadow tie-ins to go with the new movie I still think an SA2 re-release later in the year is more likely.

I honestly don't see them adding new zones to the game. Colours UItimate didn't and, as short as Generations is, I don't think they'll feel the need to here. I'm curious if things like Casino Night, the Sonic 1 Mega Drive, and the secret trophy room will be included/altered at all, especially the latter two.

It's going to be really interesting seeing people who played Frontiers but never played Gens, or only played it when it was new, play through the first few zones and notice they feel oddly familiar 😅

I'm very excited by the game with Sonic and Shadow Zippo is talking... But I'm a bit afraid too : let's hope it will be a real SONIC game and not a game dealing with Movie Sonic and Movie Shadow!!...

If this is true then it's good to see SEGA continuing to remaster games. For the love of god lets hope they improve the quality of this remaster because what they did with Origins & Colors was complete ass. Inb4 they remove the finite live systems in Gens and give us medals/coins instead...and bring back the "Tails save" feature from Colors Ultimate.

I'm indifferent to Gens. Don't hate, but don't particularly like it either, but it's nice to have more Sonic games being ported to modern consoles.

If Shadow is playable in this remaster, I do hope he will have some of his own moves instead of play exactly like Sonic like in Forces.

Hopefully there won’t be a repeat for Gens

With the State of Play confirmed, I've gone ahead and created a event in the release calendar. You can now go there and set a reminder for when the stream's set to go live:

As a lot of you also likely guessed - Motobug will also be providing a exclusive livestream of the event for Sonic Stadium members so they can watch it live and discuss the announcements live:

Me personally, holy hell I am absolutely ecstatic. I can't believe the day is finally coming where I can play 60fps Gens on my PS5.

I actually got that achievement a long time ago. Kinda difficult until I realized you don't have to avoid literally every obstacle. Just the Time Eater's attacks, thankfully.

Sorry, typically in my experience with the fandom (outside of the sonic stadium) this is the leading opinion on "Meta-Era games" (hate that term) and I've honestly gotten sick of it. (No offense to anyone)
