  • RUMOR: Sonic Generations-Related Announcement Coming Soon (UPDATE: State of Play Confirmed)

Sonic's 20th anniversary classic might be making a return.

UPDATE 1/29/2024: A State of Play has been announced, which lends much more credibility to this rumor.

In the latest of what has been a surprisingly fruitful month for reportable rumors, it appears Sonic Generations may be getting some kind of announcement in the coming days at a currently-unconfirmed Playstation State of Play digital event. This rumor comes courtesy of of XboxEra co-founder/podcast co-host Nick Baker, who posted a cryptic tweet on his Twitter account:

    IMG_2137.thumb.jpeg.183656b84a8ba0370042ceca63162d5d.jpeg

"Sonic will live in the shadow of his generation" could mean a few things, but "Sonic Generations port" seems to be the most obvious takeaway. Alternatively, it could be something that involves Shadow in some way. We do know a Shadow skin is coming to Superstars, though that would be a rather modest thing to include in a list of games. If I personally had to guess, it's a Sonic Generations remaster for modern platforms that adds Shadow as a playable character.

Now, you're probably asking "Nuckles, why are you giving this guy the time of day," at least if your treating this as skeptically as you should any rumor. Well, it's because Baker has done this before. Last September, he posted cryptic hints of an upcoming State of Play, and was one-hundred-percent accurate. As he mentions in the Twitter exchange posted above, he seems to get lists on some of the featured games ahead of time. This is what he posted last year:

As always, this is a rumor, so don't take it as news. Nothing has been confirmed. But as far as rumors go, this is one I feel more inclined to believe. So, we may be getting some sort of Sonic game announcement in the coming days, from an upcoming State of Play. If a State of Play is announced in the next couple days, we'll be sure to update this post. If this rumor ends up being true, be sure to stay tuned to Sonic Stadium for future updates.

Can't wait for Modern Amy to meet Classic Amy! Well, if that is ever gonna happen.

OMG!!! "Sonic Generations" remaster for modern platforms that adds Shadow as a playable character will be a good idea. But, for my personal guess, it will be a "Sonic Adventure" remake.

Oh boy! I sure can't wait for the remaster and the original to co-exist and for SEGA to not royally fuck over 13 years of modding by making it so that the only way to acquire the original is through piracy!

Wasn't there a rumor from Zippo about a smaller traditional game with both Sonic and Shadow playable?  That definitely sounds like what this tweet is hinting at. However I can't say I have high hopes for this considering the past couple remasters. I'm expecting something along the lines of Colors Ultimate with playable Shadow and a couple of small extras.

Generations is long overdue for a remaster, however I'd suggest anyone buy the steam version as soon as they can in case the quality doesn't hold(and odds aren't it won't). They will likely override any Steam verison that exists now like they did with previous remasters.

Good advice. But is there a single Sonic fan left on the planet who hasn't bought Generations on Steam when it's been ridiculously discounted or sold as part of a bundle?

A version of Generations with botched visuals / gameplay and loaded with a thick coating of DRM and digital deluxe DLC sounds like the perfect package to delist the Steam original with!

    =(

Hopefully, the team behind Sonic Colors Ultimate will not be doing this possible remaster of Sonic Generations.

Well, hopefully it'll have something extra for the game like some cosmetics from past Sonic games and some new ones from Frontiers and Superstars as additional levels or something.

I've bought Generations for $1 back when it was that cheap as part of the overall Sonic sale Steam was having. And I never finished it, due to my PC not being able to handle Crisis City onward. Tho going by what I've heard, it wasn't a very good port. So I'm not sure if my blame's going to the right place.

Either way, I'm down for a Generations remaster! Cuz it's been a few of years since my Xbox 360 died, and I haven't been able to properly play it, Unleashed or 2006 since. So I'm kinda hoping it's true, and leads to an eventual Unleashed remaster.

Tho in terms of the leaker who started all this. I can't deny just how accurate he is, on certain things. Especially PlayStation related matters. Tho when it comes to Sly Cooper, I think that's where people tend to be a bit bitter. I should know, I got piled upon on Twitter over a year ago because of it. Even tho he's the 1st one to leak footage for The Last of Us project at the time. :/

A Sonic Generations rerelease with a playable Shadow skin (likely only in the modern stages, natch) coming out around the time Shadow makes his debut on the silver screen? Yes, that sounds plausible enough. Sonic Team isn't going to have the next big Sonic game ready, and this would allow Sega to capitalize on the attention the movie is going to draw to the character.

What's Zippo's track record like? I really don't keep up with leaks too often.

Either way a Generations remaster would be cool so long as they don't delist the original version on Steam. (High likelihood they will considering what happened when Origins released)

PlayStation's guilty of doing this too, with Uncharted 4 & Lost Legacy unable to be purchased separately on PS4. And I'm also hearing their taking down Until Dawn, AFTER the rumor of a remaster started floating around.

I get why these versions get taken down, as to not cut into the sales of the new or remastered versions. But it still sucks that the two can't co-exist. Who knows, Sega could prove me wrong & both versions of Generations can share the same ecosystem.

I would like them to remaster Sonic Generations, It's one of my favorite games and seeing it on next-gen consoles would be great, but I would also like to see other games remastered like Sonic adventures 1 and 2, it sound incredible.

Zippo has a bad reputation for spreading fake rumors, stealing informations from other sources and claiming them as his own, and fake claims in general... though there are some cases in which he did predict stuff right, such as when he said that all of Frontiers' cyberspace levels were zones from Generations, before they were shown (it wasn't 100% true but still accurate enough).

So, while he's pretty much unreliable, there's a 0,01% chance that some of the stuff he says might be true... but like, the chance is so low that I wouldn't waste my time in trusting him anyway.

"Sonic will live in the shadow of his generation" might mean another classic game (Superstars sequel), or a Superstars Plus DLC even.

Besides, a Generations remaster is totally possible, because the rumor was already in the air since when that Tails Tube episode included a screenshot from the opening cinematic of Generations that had some very small details changed from the release we know (very slightly different lighting, Amy's hand in a slightly different position despite being the same frame).

In case a Generations remaster will happen, it would be cool if it received DLCs with more zones... from newer games (Frozen Factory, Metropolis from Forces, Ares Island*, for example) or from older games that were not covered by the original release (maybe 8bit titles and handhelds as well). The biggest chance is that it would get just a little extra thing like the new wisp in Colors Ultimate, though.

*as a linear level offcourse, not open zone.

Not played Generatipns in about 10 years or so...ever since i upgraded to ps4. A simple update for ps5 WITH Casino Night zone extra would be incredible enough on its own.

Adding Shadow for modern zones, like forces pretty much does, us an easy enough job to do too, so maybe we will get a shadow "skin" for modern stages.

Or the rumour is a hint that Gens gets a re-release while the Shadow skin drops on superstars.

A Generations remaster makes sense purely for the reason that they can put it on the Switch this time.

...Unlike with Sonic Colours, I doubt anyone's going to be protesting about missing out on the handheld version content.

A straight port of Generations to Switch is about all I want from this, but I just know that we're getting a remaster that somehow breaks the graphics. At least throw in some new stages or extra characters to offset it.

In my heart of hearts I know I would be disappointed with anything that doesn't add new levels to play, but I'd love Generations on Switch regardless.  The dream would be two new sets of zones based on Sonic 4 Ep 2, Lost World, Mania, Forces, Frontiers and Superstars - only Mania would require the visuals to be built from total scratch, but I appreciate even then that's a tall order if this would be a stop-gap project with a relatively small budget.

I can see this happening but I get really suspicious at the idea of substantial new content, or an engine change. I'm expecting the same treatment as Colors Ultimate. Anything more will be left as a nice surprise.

Given the 3rd movie setting new fans up for it, I think some kind of Shadow content is the easiest choice they could make. Though since Shadow is already a set supporting character in Generations, even insubstantially, I don't think something like Episode Shadow for the game would make sense.

Put the 3ds version in as a bonus...like Game Gear games in origins. Brilliant idea!!
