  • Gotta Go Fast With Friends! Sonic Superstars Releases October 17th

New Trailer gives us a release date, and our first look at battle mode!

Gamescom Opening Night Live delivered what many Sonic fans had been expecting: news on Sonic Superstars. In fact, we ended up receiving a minute and a half trailer for the game. No new zones were revealed, but we did finally get a release date, as well as our first look at battle mode, battle mode character customization, battle mode stages, and lots more footage of the game’s multiplayer mode in action!

Battle mode seems to be centered around playing as robot characters, that you can put together using different parts from different robots:

Battle mode has a variety of locales, both new and old, including one based in Green Hill. Mecha Knuckles also appears to be playable:

We also got our first look at a boss battle from the cyber level boss, and what looks like a spinning mechanism in Pinball Carnival and some sort of target hitting challenge in Bridge Island:

Here’s some other screenshots I grabbed from the trailer, including something that looks like some sort of level start portal from Bridge Island Act 2:

Finally, you can check out the full trailer below:

I like the trailer overall, but is it bad that I audibly groaned upon seeing that GHZ is one of the battle stages? Like, you have 12 different zones to use as a battle stage yet you choose the one that's only gonna appear in a cutscene?

Beyond that, the game still looks incredible! The digital deluxe is a bit of an eyebrow raise but I feel like the rabbit skin is gonna be made into dlc in the future.

So if I have to make an educated guess customization is mainly in battle mode, but there might be some base game skins for characters in campaign

Here is a picture of the Deluxe Edition in case you missed it.

So like... are the rabbit and Mecha Sonic 1.0 exclusive to a digital version then?

Looks like it. The Digital Deluxe content for both Colours Ultimate and Origins/Plus was made available to purchase separately, but the same can't be said for Frontiers' skins (the really ugly brown shoes and gloves). It's my anyone's guess if you'll ever need able to access this content with a physical copu of the game, unfortunately.

    It really fucking sucks.

We'll see what version I will get, and it depends on whether the skins are available for download and purchase separately... otherwise Steam.

Also, the trailer is okay but not really hype material, I got more excited by the digital deluxe extras... eh.

Suddenly, Metal Tails and Amy. (her skirt for now anyways)

Y'know what would be sick? A late game boss fight against all four Metal counterparts together. Well, sick in concept I'll admit; that also sounds like it'd be a clusterfuck in execution.

Seeing as Battle Mode is some sort of Sonic Simulator ordeal where robots in likenesses of the main characters are pitted against each other, it makes sense Silver Sonic be for there, while more organic skins like proto rabbit Sonic and modern dress Amy be for story mode.

If you think about it, LEGO minifigures are technically inorganic and have removable body parts, which makes them fit the mechanical customization angle of Battle Mode as well. But, what the heck.

I saw that there are going to be main menu wallpapers that come with the Deluxe version. With that, that kind of reminds me of the menu themes from Sonic Adventure 2/Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, as in the character themes from those games, if you know what I mean.

LEGO pack has been confirmed to be available separately, and the website is apparently listing a extra content pack as well, so it seems digital deluxe stuff will be available standalone, barring the art book and soundtrack.

    I just noticed something...

At 0:46 here, on the left side of the screen, Eggman is in his Eggmobile, which is firing a laser downwards while following Sonic, his friends and the boss robot. I wonder...

Is that a reference to the instant-kill laser beam from the famous Metal Sonic race in Sonic CD?

What are the chances we get some animated shorts prior to release like with Mania, TSR, Colours Ultimate and Frontiers? Still got all of September and a couple weeks of October to go. It's been so long, any chance to get more animated Fang than that short spot in the opening would be very much appreciated.

Depends on if Tyson Hesse is available with him working on movie 3... He didn't do the animated intro which isn't a good sign.

    Same, hopefully we get something!

Game itself also looks very promising, just hope that the single player experience is great, for those who don't want to play multi player all the time.
