  • A Wild Sonic Superstars Trailer Has Appeared In Today's Nintendo Direct!

12 zones, Fang boss, and much more!

Nintendo held a Direct today, but you probably already knew that. However, you may be surprised to learn that a new trailer for Sonic Superstars appeared in the presentation. You may be even happier to learn that this trailer contained some new information about the game, and showcased some new gameplay!

So, where to start? Well, the first thing you probably noticed is the music playing. It is more than likely music from the game, which means that we finally got an idea of what the game's soundtrack may be aiming for. And the music is actually really good. If this is what the music is for the rest of the game's soundtrack, then I don't think fans will have to worry about them taking a musical route similar to Sonic 4's. There's a new render too, potentially the game's box art, which you can see right here.

Other than that, there were a lot of small tidbits throughout the trailer, including some things that you'd miss if you blinked. We got to see a pinball area for some carnival zone that hadn't been shown before. Fang appears in the background of some gameplay, and we get to see that we will be fighting him as a boss in Speed Jungle.

SEGA showed a new emerald power, which seems to function similar to the Sunglasses and Treasure Scope that Knuckles and Rouge get in Sonic Adventure 2, respectively. It causes hidden things to become visible, including platforms and rings. And speaking of the emeralds, we actually got our first look at how the Chaos Emeralds look in this game. Well, one of them, anyway.

We even learned that Tails can carry Sonic and friends, just like he could in Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic Mania. Perhaps the biggest piece of info we learned from the trailer, however, is the news that there will be a total of 12 new zones in the game. It's more than some fans were speculating, and it was a big factor in how justified some people felt the $60 price would be.

We're still hearing a fall release date, but there was a Sonic Central announced for Friday. It's doubtful that there will be any further information about the game, but clearly SEGA has more Sonic news to share. Whether we'll get more Sonic Superstars info there is another matter entirely. In the meantime, check out the trailer down below!

It seems that when there are multiple players on screen, the camera pans back to show more of the field-of-view/stage design.

That is probably a no-brainer decision to make for co-op multiplayer in platformers; but given the limited amount of co-op footage this far, I was wondering it was be focused primarily on player one, like in the MD titles. Hopefully they've made additional (good) changes for cooperative play.

It looks like sonic had his own boss fight with Nack in speed jungle. Separate acts confirmed?

I was actually a bit concerned that Superstars would only have 7 zones, with one new Emerald Power being acquired in each zone. I'm really glad that that's not the case. The "side game" platformers have typically been fairly small, with Mania being more the exception than the rule. I look forward to seeing all 12 zones first hand.

Said it in the main thread, but I don't really see 12 zones as all that respectable. It's on par with Mania, and for the price point, to be blunt, either I expected a lot more, or there needs to be a hell of a lot of replay value in this beyond Tails, Knuckles, and Amy playing a little differently. For S3&K, it's very respectable for a game of it's time. For Mania, it has the price to justify the runtime. Here, it has neither, and other similar platformers have a hell of a lot more content and gameplay packed in.

Mania on my first run only took about 5-6 hours, and that was perfectly fine for the £15 it asked for. £60 for what would likely be the same amount of content without throwing replay stuff into it is a lot harder to stomach, especially when in that same quarter, we have Spider-Man 2, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario Bros: Wonder, and a whole lot more.

Hell, I paid £15 for Pizza Tower earlier this year and got a solid 10 hours out of it for a game that's comparatively as fast as a Sonic game, and has just as much, if not more replay value. Either these acts need to be really damn long, or there needs to be a lot of additional content, because right now, as excited as I am, £60 for 5-7 hours is a hard sell, especially if it ends up dropping in October.

I don't know, twelve zones is in the running with the longer 2D games in the series (one of which is actually two games) - and, being honest, once you start going above that it might actually be a bit too much, for the format?  A Sonic game with, say, twenty zones sounds like one of those things people think they want but would actually struggle to maintain momentum.

Looks to me like this is running at a solid 60FPS on Switch (less so in multiplayer) which is, to put it frankly, excellent.

The art style they've gone for has paid off against the visual fidelity downgrades from the more powerful consoles. And whilst I'll still be getting this on PS4, it's nice to see Switch owners for once won't have to make do with an inferior performing version of a product.

Price point is a tricky one as I think it depends on what you look for with value in the product. I'd happily have paid more for Mania if it were set at a higher price point for example (not £59.99 high, but you get what I mean). After all, I paid those equivalent prices back in the day when Sonic 1, 2, 3 & K were originally released (individually). The value people attribute to platformers (unless you're Nintendo) has dropped over the years rather unfortunately.

Otherwise, the trailer looks great (and lovely music also)! Gamers are being really spoilt this year with a new 2D Sonic AND Mario (neither of which look like they'll suck).
