  • Sonic Hacking Contest 2024 Starts September 28, To Change Things Up This Year

Change is coming to the long running fan-run online event.

In a new video presentation, the new hosts of Sonic Hacking Contest revealed a variety of changes to this year's iteration of the event. While you can watch the video yourself for all of the details, here's a few highlights:

    • The event will now run for 9 days, from September 28-October 6.
    • There will no longer be an "update week" for entries beyond fixing game-breaking glitches, and this year's submission deadline will be September 8.
    • There will no longer be an expo category. Instead, there will be judged and unjudged entries, with unjudged entries now having higher quality standards than expo entries did, roughly on par with judged entries.
    • They are now accepting translation hacks in the unjudged category.

    Check ou the video here:

The date of the expo is subject to change, depending on when Sonic X Shadow Generations is coming out. Last year's contest had to be delayed due to Sonic Superstars.

Stay tuned to Sonic Stadium for further SHC coverage!

Ah, it's nice to see a video game franchise where the company that owns it won't bring down the banhammer on events like this.

Ahhh... This is why I love Sonic. Fans are free to do anything with him, and are also encouraged by SEGA to do so! I can't wait to see the creative entries people come up with!!!

Heyyyy, do they accept concepts that might take years to develop 😉

I meant to enter last year but I was too late starting my submission and my laptop decided to die on me just as I was getting into the groove of things.

Bet you I'll miss the deadline again this year but you never know I could manage to get my arse in gear.

A mod that adds a Modern Sonic inspired styled rank system to Sonic 3 AIR. I started it last year after waking up one day going "Hmm, I wonder if S3AIR had a ranking system" and after getting some sprites made for it it all got going from there.

So far I have a working rank system that saves per-level high scores as well as the Cool Bonus from Sonic Mania, a formula for per-level rank requirements and a very basic custom results screen, but the custom results screen is kind of broken on account of it not actually progressing to the next level after pressing the input (it has something to do with global variables).

Heyyy, you are a spriter? Are you interested in joining a team for a Fan-Game with Me, @Shiny Gems, @Maple Syrup, and @sonic_the_cuber? We need a sprite artist…

I cannot draw and didn't make the sprites, so I'm afraid I can't help. I'm more of a coder myself.

I probably have phrased it as "after getting some sprites made for me".

Take notes Nintendo, THIS is how you should treat fans who want to try new things with your IPs!

If you have an idea of what programming languages and engines I'll need to learn then I may in fact be able to help in that regard.

    1. Where is this group chat to?

    2. I haven't used it much beyond minor poking around, but Godot is free and can make games for multiple platforms.
