Patiently Waiting...

The music change is not that bad. May take some time to get used to since a lot of people may be more used to the original versions of the music. Thankfully Splash Hill Zone Act 3 still sounds catchy as hell. Since that tune first entered my head, it's never going to get out of it.

Eh, I'm going to wait till tomorrow when the PSN version comes out. Though it is nice to hear a bit of a music change. I wonder if it will carry over to the PSN/XBLA versions.

*Moving Sonic 4 from Upcoming Games to Sonic Discussion*

I'm surprised the Wii Shop updated on time. I refreshed the Shop and there it was.

No issues downloading, no issues playing :)

Okay, so I downloaded it the second it came out. I've beaten the game and have gotten all the Chaos Emeralds, and have even set a few time trial records (I currently hold the #1 slot on Casino Street for Time Attack Mode as the name 'crsh40rcks'). My synopsis is thus:

The Physics are horrid. I don't understand why it would be so difficult to just take the physics from the genesis titles and reskin them to have made Sonic 4. I mean, Sega acts like what they did nearly 20 years ago is now impossible to accomplish now that our technology is BETTER?! Was the physics engine somehow bestowed upon us from sometime in the distant future when Sonic 1 was being made? Really Sega, It's like you've worked your way up through grade school and now that you've just passed calculus, you suddenly find long division to be a daunting task. Pardon the 4-Chan reference, but L2 PHYSICS, SEGA!!! IT CAN'T BE THAT HARD!!! I'm complaining because when you release the D-Pad, Sonic stops on a frickin' dime, whether he's at a standstill or at full speed, when he jumps it's only a mere 2-3 revolutions of the spin (on a positive note, the post-spin dash spin animation seems appropriate), and the controls just feel choppy in general.

Now, I'm not all about the negative with this personal review of the game. New (questionably shitty) physics aside, Sonic 4 is a great title in its own right. I can honestly say that I had fun playing it, and the level of challenge I thought felt just right. The special stages were also very challenging, which I thought was a breath of fresh air to the mainstream classic series (because, let's face it, like it or not, Sonic 4 is now a part of that line of titles). The boss battles also posed a greater deal of challenge, unlike their 16-bit counterparts, which can be easily defeated by simply bouncing on their heads until they're dead. My favorite boss fight had to be the final fight with the remake of the Sonic 2 Robotnik Mech. I was NOT expecting THAT much of a change to him! I was glad that he wasn't so lethal to touch in this game as he was in Sonic 2, so you could easily dish out attacks more frequently. The trade-off, however, is that he took nearly a whopping 40 hits (give or take) to take down! The pacing on this boss was great too. Just when you get a feel for how to attack him, he switched phases (5 phases in all).

I also loved Act 3 of Mad Gear Zone, entitled, "Impending Doom." Not only did you have a level to navigate and hazards to dodge, but you were pressed for time by a giant drill-laden wall that was constantly on your heals! Talk about an adrenaline rush! Even though I probably died the most on it, it is easily one of my most loved stages.

My summary: Sonic 4 is an enjoyable title and a great addition to the franchise. It's definitely a good sign that things for our little blue friend are starting to look up for the first time in the past decade, and with Sonic Colors on the horizon, it looks like we'll have even more Sonic side-scrolling action to look forward to. While it's not perfect, Sonic 4 definitely stands on its own two legs and makes for a good jumping-off point for SEGA to use as a reference when considering player feedback for Episode 2.
