Can Sonic fly a plane?

No. I don't think so. Sonic is a competent pilot, we've seen that. But it seems fairly clear that Tails is the 'aerial ace' character of the series. He's always been the 'flight' element, both by his own tail power and with planes.

Sonic seems to have learned enough about piloting to comfortably get from A to B with minimal mishaps, but he doesn't appear to have the passion and enthusiasm that Tails has for it. Tails may get into trouble more, but that's because he takes far more risks when flying - and most of the time pulls them off with flair.

Tons of times we saw Sonic flying, the first one I can remember is Sonic the Hedgehog 2. A better question, is he a better pilot than Tails :D?

There unfortunately isn't anything official at all to indicate Sonic's level of skill other than the fact that he's done it a lot less than Tails in the actual games. Unfortunately, you can't even necessarily count the in-game sequences of Sonic 2, since every time you play as Tails in Sonic 2, 3, or S&K, he's just taking Sonic's place in the adventure (kind of like what he did in Sonic Adventure to an even greater degree), so that's even less "canon" time for our blue pilot in question. The only time in the series I can think of where it definitively says Sonic flies a plane, and it's not just some other character replacing him in the same story, is the JP manual for Sonic 2.

So, in short, Sonic could be a terrible pilot, or he could be better than Tails. Tails is only 8 years old; Sonic's almost twice that. Who knows when he started piloting or how skilled he became in his pre-Sonic-1 tussles with Eggman. All we do know is that he's adventurous and enjoys wing-walking even more, which is no surprise when considering a guy like him.

My guesses just based on their personalities would say that Tails has a finer grasp of flight mechanics, but once the throttle's wide open and the only thing the pilot has to concern himself with is energy (in the mass-energy-related flight sense of the word), and using it to outmaneuver the enemy, Sonic, with all his reflexes, quick thinking, and aggressive drive, might be the better dogfighter. We'll probably never see either way, though.

Yeah well, even though mostly we see Tails flying the plane, we also have Sonic which is twice as age of Tails. But canon or not, we see him flying the plane not worse than Tails. But on the other hand, some say Tails crashed his plane (more than once), sure, but he flyes it all the time, so there is more chance to get his plane crushed, and probably flying the plane in the worse situation than Sonic. And when we add to it that Sega doesn't make so much connection with games, our discussion will probably be useless, and that showed discussion about is Shadow the Ultimate life form or not (there were more than 5 pages... ).
