It's interesting that it appears they never intended for her to be a different animal. Her concept art isn't as varied as past characters after all.

Though her name is Ariem which spoken aloud, sounds like "A lamb" plus sheep have a long time association with sleeping, hence the old adage, counting sheep as something you can do to help fall asleep.

Now that I think about it, a cartoon depiction of a sheep looks rather dream like. It's a cloud with a head and feet after all. But all that flies out the window as soon as you do what Amy's Sonic Adventure theme suggests and shave it.
