Sonic Frontiers Wins Excellence Award at Tokyo Game Show 2023

Sonic Frontiers has just won a coveted 'Excellence Award' in the 'Annual Works' bracket of the Tokyo Game Show's "Japan Game Awards" ceremony. The honour, which will be shared with a number of other games, is intended to recognise high quality works from Japanese developers released in the past year.

The win comes after we reported that the game had been nominated for the award back in July, alongside Sonic Origins (Plus), and follows a past 'Feature' award that the title received at last year's Japan Game Awards.

The latest 3D action adventure, which saw Sonic the Hedgehog face off against unknown enemies on the Starfall Islands (and technically his own memories, in Cyberspace), was received well by critics and quickly adored and highly acclaimed by Sonic fans at launch. Over the last several months, Sonic Team has worked on free expansions for the title, introducing bug fixes and new features.

SEGA shared a photo of the game's director, Morio Kishimoto, accepting the award on social media, you can check it out below.

Look how happy he is! Given all the hard work Kishimoto and his team have put into the open-zone adventure (including its series of free post-launch DLC), we'd say this is very well deserved. Congratulations Kishimoto-san, and to Sonic Team!

That's great! Kishimoto and the rest of Sonic Team deserve this after how hard they've worked to make Sonic Frontiers as good as it is.

Going from Frontiers potentially being his last game to great sales and now this is really cool. Real happy for the guy.

Still relevant a year later. that's crazy. Sonic games these days are lucky to stay relevant a few months max. Even the good ones like Mania don't have much staying power.

Say what you will about Sonic Team, but give them their flowers. They were probably under the most scrutiny they ever faced coming off of Forces and they obliterated expectations.

They deserve a little victory lap.
