Today, Sonic Origins has received yet another patch addressing long-standing audio-visual issues and a handful of bugs. SEGA highlighted the three most notable updates in a social media post; however, we've posted the full list below as well:

A number of other issues are specified by the game's Steam update page:

Quote

• New Feature - Players can toggle off the Clean Filter to have a "nearest neighbor" pixel rendering in Sonic 1/2/3&K/CD and all Game Gear games in the Options Menu.
• New Feature - Players can toggle Game Gear sound to Mono in the Options Menu. This feature addresses the “double audio” Game Gear audio issue.
• Game Gear games will now fill into the provided screen space properly.
• Super Amy will have proper after-images while running.
• Amy's movements will appear smoother in Sonic 2 Special Stages.
• Metallic Madness Zone 2 item boxes location and contents are properly placed.
• In Quartz Quadrant Zone 2, Amy will no longer disappear as the camera moves away in certain conditions.
• Players can now pause the game while in Doomsday Zone.
• In Boss Rush mode against Egg Tilter, Knuckles will have proper rolling animations from springs.
• In Flying Battery Zone, spin-dashing into the magnetic presses will no longer result in instant collision death.
• The correct description for "Jump" is now present in the Chinese localization of the Sonic 3&K digital manual.
• In Competition Mode, Knuckles' change direction movement has been adjusted.
• Additional physics adjustments have been made in Sandopolis Zone.
• Menu text will no longer shrink after entering the Museum and returning to the Main Menu.
• Amy will now be able to complete stage loops while using her Rush Attack.
• The game will no longer crash while playing as Sonic and Tails after collecting the 6th Chaos Emerald in Sonic 1.
• In Sonic CD, Extras that are unlocked will now remain unlocked.
• In Sonic CD, Amy will appear in the proper coordinates after time travelling in certain levels.

Platform-Specific Updates:
• Save Data corruption will no longer occur in rare instances on PC (Steam/Epic Game Store).

Though most of these issues were not game-breaking prior, the lack of pixel filtering options had been a significant criticism against the collection since launch, and the strange de-synchronized stereo effect on Game Gear games a complaint since Plus's launch. Whether you see the collection as the optimal Classic Sonic experience or a series of bizarre missteps and oversights, these fixes are a welcome addition to this year-old collection.

SEGA does the bare minimum and fixed issues that should never have existed in Origins to begin with... Most of these issues, like Amy's animations in the S2 Special Stage and Game Gear audio, are so glaringly obvious that they shouldn't have ever made it into the final game. And other issues, like the screen filter and Sandopolis physics, have existed since the base version of the game launched over a year ago. It's good that SEGA fixed these issues, but they're getting no praise from me for doing so after the game already launched twice at full price with additional DLC.

Never even noticed 90% of these or realised they were issues. What on Earth is the Sandopolis Physics issue for example?

It’s good they went back and fixed / improved some things to make the package more credible now. That being said… it’s still a shame even the DLC was rushed out the door with those liabilities. Naughty naughty, SEGA.

Sandopolis has some unique ramps that send you into the air at a fixed velocity (using the corkscrew running animations). They were bugged in Origins, not sending you far or high enough. I think that there may have beef a few issues with the physics on the the sand "waterfalls" too.

If nothing else, I appreciate the sharper visuals now.

But I'll never forgive Plus for bringing me Sonic Blast

Amy being able to go through loops during her rush attack is a game-changer I wasn't expecting (though I wasn't expecting any patches at all so this is appreciated).  It felt like it was that way by design as a trade-off for using it wily-nilly but it also felt really unsatisfying, so I'm glad they chose fun there if it was just a delibrate change and not a fixing of unintented behaviour.

Not being able to pause in Doomsday Zone is a really funny one to learn was a thing only now due to it being fixed, that's a pretty big goof there lol.

Do the Game Gear games make particularly heavy usage of stereo sound in headphones play?  I can't imagine it would be that rich an audio experience these days, certainly not one enough to be worth the echo effects which they even specify are an issue here despite only having a workaround fix added to the game rather than a solid one. They should probably just default them to mono rather than make it an opt-in thing to make them sound... Not Bad.  I mean hey switching to mono sound worked for fixing Sonic Colours Ultimate's audio issues right? Dohoho.

The Hammer Rush was broken in S3K. In the other games, when Amy approached a loop/steep slope whilst in a Hammer Rush, she would automatically switch to running normally. It was only in S3K that she would stop as though she'd run face-first into a wall. The patch notes are a bit misleading because the fix only applies to S3K, making it behave like the other games.

Well hey, I wasn't expecting any more patches, so I'll take it. Good on them for fixing those issues.

EDIT: nvm lmao

I agree with you the patches are very welcoming for fixing those Issues.

I agree with your valid points here:

1. The Game Gear audio sounded terrible and It did because I played a couple of the Sonic GG games and did notice the sound Issues problems.

2. I brought both the Digital and physical as well and paid twice myself like you said. I just wished they just brought out the physical copy upon release the first time around. I think 🤔 they did this with Sonic Maina In a similar manner If I remember.

But yeah you cover everything that's right on point here.

Wait, so they finally added an option to get rid of the bilinear filter (which I call the toothpaste filter because it looks like they smeared toothpaste all over it)? Took them bloody long enough.

Either way, I'm still passing on the DLC and won't even think about it unless they give me back the £4 extra I spent on the now obsolete Digital Deluxe Edition. I also think that I like emulating these old games on the MiSTer more than I do the modern amenities provided by the remaster.

For the Next patch, please, please, please give us the option to switch to the Master system versions for Sonic1 ,2 and Chaos.

Please!

Still no fix for the volume of the Sonic CD intro/outro?

I know it's a minor issue, but also should have been pretty easy to fix.... among other things.

Apparently Tails has the potential for crashing Labyrinth Zone, as I understand it.

Game sounds like it was a right mess, glad I skipped the physical version. (Having physical sounded pointless knowing the plus was dlc only and not on the disc)

I only played this game a little bit on digital and it felt off not having lives in windscreen, so if you wanted wide-screen, you had to play baby mode.

Enjoyed Knuckles in Sonic 1 though.

Can't beat the DS classic collection and the 360 Mega Drive Ultimate Collection.

I don't really plan on going back to Origins anytime soon, but that's neat. I'm glad they're not leaving it out to dry, but these issues really shouldn't have been present to start with. The Doomsday Zone glitch especially just boggles the mind.

Sure does, I've heard it's in all versions but I tested it myself on PS5. In Sonic 1, if Tails is underwater for longer than a few seconds the game hard crashes back to the PS5 home screen.

Video of the glitch on Switch (Not my video):

Ohhhh wow now that's a bad, bad glitch. Does it happen every time? Can you no longer complete Labyrinth Zone as Tails??

From my testing it happened everytime you got to a certain (not very far) depth in any Labyrinth Zone Act as well as Scrap Brain Act 3. No issues with Tails in 2,3 or CD though. I hope they fix it soon!

Another weird Tails Sonic 1 bug just popped up (Switch).

I went back to a Boss Rush with Tails (I'd previously completed a run with him on the previous build of the game), and pressed Continue. The game took me to the Level Select instead of the last boss.

Feel free to try it out with other characters and platforms.

1. Go to Sonic 1, and select Boss Rush. Complete the Rush with Tails on v. 2.0 of Sonic Origins +.

2. Upgrade to 2.0.1. Go back to the Sonic 1 menu, select again. Select Start. Choose Tails.

3. Select Continue. Stare in amazement.

Update: It now looks like it does this for every game and character if your last complete run was on the previous build, and you choose to continue instead of starting a new run.

Sonic CD gives us the attached pictures.

Sonic 2 put me into Chemical Plant 2 with no ability to pause. I had to reboot the game.

Sonic 3&K seems to be OK.

So, based on the Tails hard crash....more patches to come then.

Please give us an Amy "& Knuckles" easter egg option in S3&K on top of the MS versions of 1,2 and Chaos if so please! Lol
