Don't have it (although at least two people at work do...and they have to be using APKs since I'm in England. >:0 ), but not that interested either. I think Dream Catcher burned me on the idea of AR Pokemon.

Finally got in last night after work.  Of course, it's pretty useless at 11:30 pm, since it requires you to go wandering.  But I didn't need to log in this morning, so I took the dog for a walk and discovered a Pokestop across the street (First Christian Church, not sure what their thoughts on Pokemon are) an a gym a couple blocks up the road at the Elder Center.  The defunct school behind me isn't anything, but past that are two more Pokestops (the Library and First Baptist) and another block over, my own church is a PokeGym.   I dropped in to tell my husband, who's currently manning the office, that he's actually working at a Pokemon Gym. Along the way, I caught nine Pokemon, including Pidgeotto and Beedrill; my favorite was the Eevee that was standing on my dog's head.  And I got to level 3.

I caught a Bulbasaur at the post office.  What I've been reading is they're only startup or egg-based, so this isn't true.  Hatched a Clefairy, and am now of a level to go check out a gym.

...this game is actually really genius in how it will stay relevant for months, if not years to come.

Think about it. Pokemon GO, once it's all said and done, is pretty straight forward and about as deep as a 3ft pool. There's fun to be had in collecting Pokemon and challenging gyms, and the team system really helps, too, but compared to Ingress which is far more complex and streamlined, it's technically not going to last much longer than a month.

Except for the simple fact that it's Pokemon.

Niantic can easily add a new feature every month or so, such as more communication options, trading, trainer battling, maybe more complex movesets or something, but that alone wouldn't keep people engaged after they get tired of it.

You know what would, though?

Adding Pokemon from Johto.

And after a few months of that wearing thin... then they unleash their limited time Legendary events.

...and then after that passes... they update the mechanics a little.

...then they add Hoenn.

...then they release those Legendaries.

And then they update the mechanics further.

And then they add Sinnoh. Then their Legendaries. Then update the mechanics some.

Rinse and repeat. By the time we get to the Alola dex, Nintendo may already be working on Gen VII.

This game is going to be an evergreen moneyrake for Nintendo for a good long time, and it's genius. Genius.

And that's why I don't see how this is a 'fad' that will quickly die out so quickly, unlike Miitomo. First of all, its Pokemon. Secondly, with the core mechanics the way they are and up to six present generations of Mons at their disposal to add to the game (among updates like battling others, trading and fixes and stuff) its money making prowess will be raking in for Nintendo/The Pokemon  Company/N.Labs

I can't play Pokemon Go. After hours of struggling with virtually every aspect of starting the thing, I've discovered my phone simply can't handle it.

Virtually all of my associates are playing it. There's gonna be 1000+ plus people at a Pokemon Go event Friday night. For the first time in years, my friends--heck, people all around me--are abuzz about Pokemon, something I've never stopped enjoying since I was a kid. And it's an aspect about it that I can't be a part of. While the game is bringing so many people together, I feel more isolated than ever. This sucks.

Gah, sorry for bringing down the mood. This frustration has been building for a few days and I just needed to vent. Glad everyone else is enjoying it.

Aww man, that sucks. I suppose it gives an incentive to save up for a new phone. My Samsung s4 seems to handle the game very well and those are sometimes cheap to come by.

I just happened to get my new phone up and running today and voila, Pokémon Go! is available. I caught my first wild Pokémon, Eevee, when it was dancing on my toilet...

Apparently there's a few new tricks some people have discovered, but I haven't tried them myself such as waiting a long time when you find a Pokemon for the Pokemon to make a happy gesture and then throw the ball. It apparently helps a ton when you get to the higher levels where even Pidgeys and Rattatas are hard to catch. Apparently it's not an definite catch but increases the chances of a successful capture.

Also , Rubberross of Game Grumps and animation fame recorded footage of what was essentially a stampede for a Dratini which ended with mass disconnects and even the fire brigade at one point. He says he's putting the video up later on his wife's channel. People are pretty crazy sometimes.

Edit: Here it is:

Why do IT folks always think it's a great idea to take inadequate servers and add MORE people to them?  I have been trying to get on all morning and everything is utterly jammed.  It's not like the servers were very stable BEFORE adding another 26 countries, and they ought to have been aware that the weekend itself was going to be problematic without a ton more people.

I guess they're still under the impression that Europe is 'small' just because it looks small on a map.

Only other thing I can think of is they set up a European route server like how a lot of games have East coast and West coast servers that route to a megaserver.

Something thing like two weeks into the release of this game, and I have never seen more interest in a game by casual or non-gamer people since grandmas were playing Wii Bowling ten years ago. The appeal, like with the Wii, is the simplicity of the game. It has no learning curve. So many people, like my girlfriend for example, cannot be bothered to learn the mechanics of a traditional rpg like Pokémon on handheld, nor do they have the patience for level grinding and exploration on handheld. Pokémon Go completely removes any boundaries to game-phobic people, and leaves one simple fact remaining: Everyone fucking loves collecting Pokémon. It's just become simpler. It succeeds in being basic enough to be that ridiculously popular. Just the other day I saw an old man and his wife wandering towards a park, at 9 pm, looking for the active lure spot at the park's memorial. They were met by a set of parents escorting their kids and a group of young couples cathing Growlithes under a tree. I gave in to the temptation last night after taking out the garbage, to stroll around the block and scope out the Bellsprouts in my neighborhood. At 11 pm. Anyways, this is addictive. They need a few more extra features on update! Go Team Mystic!

Hooray, Pokemon GO is in Canada now! Whoo-ho!

Now I can join in on all the server crashes as well.

Ok so yesterday, try to play it. Won't let me in becuase servers are down. I try now and it says it failed to get player information for the server.

*sighs*

This is gonna be painful.

Awww yiss, my first Caterpie.

Don't reckon I'll be challenging a gym or even choosing a team until at least level 10. The nearest gym to me is just two or three blocks away, a leisurely five-seven minute walk, and keeps changing hands between all three teams. Every day I see it guarded by (what I presume are ridiculously high level) Vileplumes, Victreebells, a Snorlax, sometimes an Exeggutor, Jolteon or Vaporeon. Yesterday, I watched from afar as a Red team Lapras got schooled by a Weedle - I assume that the Lapras had just ploughed through a bunch of much higher level PKMN, and the brave little Weedle was just the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back.

Nabbed a Hypno and a Gastly during my cab rides home from work this week. Not sure what the cut-off speed is for catching them though, I think I heard that it's something like 20mph.

pokemon_go_team_leaders.jpg

Well here are the gym leaders, in case you were wondering! I'm happy with Valor, but I wish we knew a little bit more about how significant our choice of team is. Here's what VG247 have reported:

Quote

Niantic told panel attendees that the three team leaders weren’t quite ready when the app launched this month, but are on their way to Pokemon Go. They will interact with the player in various ways such as offering advice.

Although new features are part of the developer’s multi-year plan for Pokemon Go support, Niantic said server stability and big fixes are its biggest priority for Pokemon Go right now. It is also looking at ways to prevent undesirable player behaviour like poaching newly-conquered gyms.

When it does have time to develop new features for Pokemon Go, Niantic intends to introduce new Pokemon and trading – no surprises there – but also to give players the power to customise Pokestop function, and possibly even introduce Pokemon Centres.

As for other ideas from the community like breeding, it’s possible but nothing has been announced. The Pokemon Go team at Niantic is yet to implement more than 10% of its own ideas for the app, apparently.

We’ll probably be waiting a fair while for these tenuous future plans to take shape, but there are plenty of things to see and do in Pokemon Go right now. Niantic said players are yet to discover many of the app’s Easter Eggs, such as the trick for evolving your Pokemon Go Eevee into Jolteon, Vapoereon or Flareon.

Although the SDCC panel was pakced, it looks like Niantic will have to work hard to retain its enormous audience; Pokemon Go usage appears to have peaked.
