564 – The Most Comfortable Way to Hold a 3DS

I’ve been wanting to do a comic on this for awhile.

Nintendo’s had a weird focus on making the A button on a diamond-shaped (i.e. SNES-style) layout the primary button. During the SNES days, this wasn’t the case; games like DKC and Mario World would have you running by holding Y, and tapping B, while Square’s games always stood out to me for having the far-right A be the confirm button (and B being cancel).

Since the Wii’s classic controller, though (and extending to the 3DS), they pretty much go back to this awkward A/B layout every time, including in the new Kirby game. I think it’s to keep the button names consistent across platforms, but the B/A configuration on the NES controller is clearly the equivalent of the Y/B configuration on the SNES, because of the way your thumb is angled.

Now, this strip exaggerates the curvature of one’s thumb a bit, but even so, the most comfortable way I can play games like this is by having my thumb sit on the edge between both buttons, and “rocking” back and forth–and this just doesn’t feel all that great.

So amidst people clamoring for Nintendo to make more “hardcore” games, I just would like them to go back to the way Super Mario World controlled already!

570 – Baby Bros.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines! It’s go (kart) time!

Like all of the 570 or so BitF comics, this one boils down to a simple phrase: “Isn’t that weird?” I’m less interested in the mechanics of the babies’ existence in the same plane as their future selves so much as the adults’ bizarre use of the babies in and of itself. You have your past self coexisting with you and you decide to throw them into karts and on the tennis courts? Isn’t that weird?

Now that I’ve thoroughly explained (and killed) the joke, please accept my apology for a delayed podcast. There’ve been some big technical issues lately putting these together where the sound files don’t line up right and it requires hours of editing. But one of these days it’ll be here!

571 – Pink Gold Peach

An early comic! A very early comic. I won’t have access to my computer Monday night, so I’m putting up Tuesday’s strip a little early. The rest of the comic schedule this week will be normal.

Pink Gold Peach! I guess Mario Kart just sort of made her up, so it’s time to have a comic all about her. I’m not really sure if she’s simply a metal version of Peach, or if there’s some weird alternate-dimension Peach that showed up one day (the same way the babies came in) or what. The Mario series is pretty strange. Either way, this princess wouldn’t be any less kidnap-proof than the old, softer one.

I love how the banana peel's expression changes, I kinda feel bad for the banana peel in the last panel they are in, that's a really sad pair of eyes. 

 

Also, no comics till July 2nd, Matthew is on his summer vacation and visiting his in-laws, not to mention that E3 is coming up, hope he enjoys his break.

Got to love that reference to classic Looney Tunes, I'm pretty surprised I never thought about that kind of punchline regarding this game, also love the line of squares in the background.

 

Honestly, those Goombas are the least of Mario's problems compared to winged Goombas with Piranha Plants on them with an army of Hammer Bros in the background, guess they didn't want to overdo it.

The shocked look on the Inkling with blue paint's face in the first pane is priceless, I also love that one guy with the crossed arms in the background of the last panel.
