Which Sonic Game has the best soundtrack?

Good choices. Sonic Unleashed is one of my top favorites as well. I love that there are instruments from around the world in it. If generations did not exist I would pick it as my top album.

Finally someone else who likes the music of 06! Yes 06 as a game had some flaws (many flaws that the people here like to "discuss"wink.png). But the music by far is not one of these flaws. If you listen to the album apart from the game it has a lot of good tunes. The "Just Smile" event music always makes my heart skip a beat. Its a powerful melody.

I haven't listened to a whole lot of 06's music, but the few tracks that I have heard are pretty fantastic. I find Kingdom Valley to be especailly epic, with Crisis City a very close second.

Those two are very good tracks. I also like the aquatic base music and radical train. Its definitely a soundtrack worth checking out.

I can’t stop listening to this soundtrack! It started out with just a few songs, but now I’m becoming addicted to the whole thing! I’m not sure if it’s my favorite Sonic OST or not, but it’s one of the few video games where I can listen to its music for hours on end. The music is very upbeat and atmospheric and I can‘t get enough of it. Tomoya Ohtani did a great job on this soundtrack and I can’t wait until he composes music for a Sonic game again.

Semi on topic, it's seems MJ might not have been the only inspiration behind Sonic 3's soundtrack. Someone at Retro found this gem:

Sounds even nicer with vocals, don't ya think? tongue.png

This is a tough one, as the excellency of Sonic music knows no bounds. If I had to go with what I feel is the Sonic game with the best soundtrack, I am going to have to go with Sonic Colors:

l5YGyI5.jpg?1

The main reason why Sonic Colors' soundtrack is my favorite is because of this piece right here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eODArFqHbf0

Planet Wisp Act 1. This has to be one of the most beautiful tracks that I have ever heard in my entire life. I remember the first time I heard it I felt like crying because it was so beautiful. I was totally mesmerized by it, totally amazed with the piano and bass together. I had listened to it over and over again for hours that night as I couldn't stop listening to it. I also enjoyed the Act 2 and Act 3 remixes of Planet Wisp as well as it is definitely the level in Sonic Colors that has my favorite music.

I liked how Sonic Colors provided 3 different versions of each track during gameplay, along with a introductory track for each level's menu/Act Select map, giving you more variations of each original track to enjoy. Even the Game Land music sounds good in its 8-bit glory, mimicking the sounds of each of the game's main levels. So in the end there is 4 different versions of each track, 5 if you include the Act Select music. Cutscene music is great too.

Tropical Resort and Sweet Mountain I find to be very catchy tracks, while Aquarium Park and Planet Wisp I find to be very peaceful and soothing pieces, Starlight Carnival sounds very festive like a party is going on, and Asteroid Coaster and Terminal Velocity never fail to get my adrenaline going. Especially Terminal Velocity:

There isn't a track in Sonic Colors that I don't like. I can sit down and listen to this whole soundtrack with no problem or the need to skip a track-all 82 of them. From Reach For the Stars to Speak With Your Heart, with everything in between, Sonic Colors' Vivid Sound x Hybrid Colors soundtrack is one I find to be enjoyable from beginning to end. smile.png

There's just so many Sonic soundtracks I love and can't get enough of at the moment. Unleashed used to be my favorite Sonic OST, but over time, it constantly grows stale for me, but then I love it again the next moment! Gah, it's so dang hard to choose! All my opinions keep shifting constantly, but there's currently one game that is a strong contender for being the best Sonic soundtrack.

Originalgrooverush.jpg

There really is no other phrase to describe Sonic Rush's soundtrack other than "way past cool". I remember thinking it was an extremely odd style of music to go with in a Sonic game that was never used in any other, but after giving the entire OST a listen, I can say with confidence that Hideki Naganuma's use of sampling is pure brilliance. From a Malcom X speech creating what may very well be my favorite boss theme in the series, "Wrapped in Black", to a African tribal song forming the strangely catchy "Jeh Jeh Rocket", there really isn't a song in this game I don't like. It's just pure groovy, hip funk music, Everything here makes me want to break out into an insane breakdance, it's that dang catchy. While the game's level design may piss me off, that doesn't stop the soundtrack from being my favorite in 2D Sonic history, and maybe even all time.

Here's my favorite music from every Sonic game I've listened to:

"Sonic 1":

"Starlight Zone": A much needed break from "Labyrinth Zone". The music goes exceedingly well with the zone. A calm, peaceful, nightly tune that's has a "calm before the storm" feeling to it.

"Sonic 2":

"Hill Top Zone":  I loved this zone and its music. The zone's music is so hillbilly-ish and it goes hand-in-hand with "Hill Top Zone's" mountain theme.

"Shy Chase Zone": What's to say about this zone's music that's not already said? Peaceful and calming after the heck that was "Metropolis Zone".

"Sonic 3" ("Sonic & Knuckles Collection" port):

"Launch Base Zone Act 1 (General Midi)": This musics gets you in a cheery mood and it also gets you pumped for the final boss battle of "Sonic 3".

"Sonic & Knuckles" ("Sonic & Knuckles Collection" port):

"Sky Sanctuary Zone" (General Midi): The music is very heavenly for the second to final zone of the game. The general midi version of this song one-ups the original "SEGA GENESIS" version as the general midi version sounds like a church choir unlike the "SEGA GENESIS" version.

"Sonic 3D Blast" ("SEGA GENESIS"):

None. This game maybe fun, but the music stunk majorly.

"Sonic 3D Blast" ("SEGA SATURN"):

"Diamond Dust Zone" (both acts): The music in here so so very majestic and it corrupts the "SEGA GENESIS" version. Both acts of this zone's music gives it a winter wonderland feel; something that the "SEGA GENESIS" version wished it did what this version done. I listen to this version now every "Christmas".

  "Sonic Adventure"

"Azure Blue World" and "Windy & Ripply": This music is what I remebered playing the demo disk on the "SEGA DREAMCAST" and "PC". It a tropical, laid-back, soothing music appeal to both acts. Man this song brings back memories of the demos.

"Big Fishes At Emerald Coast": You will not hear this music anywhere else. I don't have fond memories of this version unlike "Azure Blue World" or "Windy & Ripply", but it's still excellent nonetheless. It fits Big so well: laid-back, makes fantastic fishing music, and makes getting Froggy a joy to do.

"Sonic Adventure 2"

Meh. Besides "Live & Learn" and "A Ghost's Pumpkin Soup" I don't like any other tracks in the game.

"Sonic Heroes"

"Frog Forest":  The tropical theme really blends in with the frog's croaks, mushroom bouncing, and vine grinding of this zone.

"Seaside Hill Zone": The zone's amazing so why not add amazing music in the mix? The beats in the music acts like water hitting the shorelines of a beach. Amazing.

"Lost Jungle": You're going deeper within the forest now as you now get hyped to find Robotnik and save the day. The music sounds so much like African rainforests music that is not even funny.

"Ocean Palace": The music feels like water blasting up from the ocean and covers you with the cool ocean water

"Shadow The Hedgehog":

"I Am (All Of Me): This brings out the amazing bad-butt that is Shadow the Hedgehog. He does not know who or what he is, but he sure will have a blast to figure it out. "Crush 40" did an amazing job of reflecting this song towards Shadow as his main theme.

"All Hail Shadow": This song represents Shadow's good choice and overcoming all of the obstacles he had faced over his journey to become a hero.

"Sonic: Next Gen"

"Just Smile" (Event): I love this beautiful, tear-jerk of a song. It only lasts for 1:30, but god dang it it's so worth it. Princess Elise does not want to forget Sonic, but they have no choice.

And that's my choices. I don't know if I posted here before, if I did this is an updated list.

Sonic After the Sequel.

Yes, seriously.

Agreed. Sonic Before the Sequel is awesome too. I also thought Sonic Megamix has solid "(classic) Sonic-fied" remixes of Sonic tracks as well as tracks from other Sega Genesis/retro games.

Regarding official games, I still think Sonic CD EU/JP is number one. I'd have to cite Sonic 3&K as second and Sonic 2 in third. Sonic Heroes, Colors, and Unleashed I think do a fine job of rounding out the next best top three.

That's a pretty hard question for me to answer. Even if a Sonic game is good or bad, it usually has a great soundtrack. (Minus Chronicles)

Probably my most recent favorite is Sonic Lost World's. Despite not enjoying the game that much, the themes were pretty lively and unique due to having a different feel compared to other Sonic soundtracks due to the themes being orchestrated and focused more on atmosphere (sort of) similar to Sonic CD's American soundtrack.

Two of my favorites are...

Tropical Coast Act 3...

And the final boss theme!

I could be here all day if I had to come up with my favorite Sonic soundtrack. Instead, I'm going to list my favorite ones:
Sonic CD Japanese

Sonic 2
Sonic Adventure
Sonic Colors
Sonic Lost World

Sonic 3 and Knuckles

That's all I got. I've been jamming out to some of Lost World's badass songs, so maybe it'll surpass Sonic Colors and be on par with Adventure. :P

That's a hard question to answer. Most of the games have awesome soundtracks. I know for certain that I love all the songs in SA1 and 2, but I don't know if I can call those my favorite. If I had to pick one, I guess I would say Sonic Generations has the best soundtrack.

Definitely Sonic Adventure 2 for me.  I have several soundtracks on my 3DS SD card, but I remove tracks that I don't like all that much.  SA2 has the most complete soundtrack there, though admittedly a bit of that might be nostalgia.  Oh, and it has my favorite song ever in it.

Pyramid Cave?  Oh, you don't hear a guitar like that every day.

Live and Learn... I think I consider this the main theme of the series.  Also is the aforementioned favorite song.

Do Fangames count as well?

Hands down the two best soundtracks of the series, in my humble opinion. Sonic of course has it's fair share of awesome soundtracks to choose from, and I love the musical pieces games like Unleashed, Colours, CD, Adventure, Rush, etc. have to offer. But this group of talented musicians from our very own fanbase have crafted something very special with so much quality, energy and variety. The two games these songs belong to may not be for everyone, but almost all agree that those soundtracks are well worth a listen. Hell, even the great Jun Senoue complimented the team for their effort.

I really do think the JP Soundtrack to CD is the best soundtrack. I know it's what everyone says, it's just the way the melody is played out in the different time zones is genius

This is a great example.

This is hard. I can't really decide between Sonic 2,Sonic R and SA1 and 2. I love Sonic 2's soundtrack. It's great and SA1 and 2 are both just fantastic. I think I like SA1's soundtrack better than SA2's though. And Sonic R wow just...wow. That soundtrack is just amazing. I particularly like "Work It Out" but "Can You Feel The Sunshine" is classic. But then again going back to Sonic 2... Emerald Hill... Chemical Plant... Metropolis... this is just too hard.

Yeah, this is a tough question to answer.  My favourites are the Genesis soundtracks, also including Sonic CD's soundtrack (particularily the JP/EU version). I also love Sonic Rush's soundtrack, as I am a big fan of Hideki Naganuma.

I like alot of the Sonic series soundtracks! But if I had to choose the one that is my favourite? I would go with Sonic Adventure 2 because I just love it's soundtrack for it's awesome rock tunes and just the genres of different music it offers! My favourite song from the soundtrack is Escape From The City! Oh boy that song is just energetic and fast-paced beyond belief! It is also very catchy! Which is awesome! So yeah that's my favourite Sonic soundtrack and my favourite song from Sonic Adventure 2. I also love everything else about the game! :D

It's between Sonic Rush and Sonic Colours. Pretty much EVERY track in these games were amazing, whereas even in the classics there were a few boring duds IMO. Such as Marble Zone, Spring Yard, Aquatic Ruin, Marble Garden, Casino Night etc. I just find them boring.

I was so disappointed in Rush Adventure's soundtrack :(

For me, it's a very hard choice between Sonic CD, Sonic 06 and Sonic Unleashed.

Sonic CD has that cool 90's Dance/Electronic beat which I miss so badly in today's game music, the Sonic 06 OST is full of pleasant, beautiful tracks (Tropical Jungle and Flame Core, anyone?) and Sonic Unleashed's levels of variety and detail are amazing. I really can't pick just one.
