  • SEGA Reveals Focus on "Multiple" Remasters and Remakes for the Year Ahead As Sonic Series Sells 5.8m

Company wants to strengthen the brand awareness of Sonic through movies and other media.

SEGA Sammy has reported that the Sonic the Hedgehog game series has sold a total of 5.8 million units worldwide in the past fiscal year (ending March 2022), an increase of 30% over 2021 on the back of new release Sonic Colors: Ultimate.

During the Japanese corporation's annual business and shareholder meeting, SEGA CEO Haruki Satomi shared details of the Sonic series' sales performance over the last two years. In the fiscal year 2021 (from April 2020-March 2021), the franchise had sold 4.4m units by comparison.

SEGA also revealed in its report that it aims to spend the next fiscal year (April 2022 through March 2023) "strengthening user engagement" in its core franchises, with the Sonic series specifically mentioned as an area of focus. Noting the release of the Hollywood Sonic movies, the upcoming Sonic Prime on Netflix and SEGA's own Sonic Frontiers, the company will use these projects as a means to further expand Sonic's brand awareness globally.

Beyond Sonic, SEGA Sammy also announced a focus over the next year on "multiple" remakes and remasters on top of its planned schedule of new titles in already-established franchises. Sonic was not specifically mentioned as a future focus for this new endeavour, but it did state that an example of this strategy would be the upcoming Sonic Origins - a compilation of classic 16-Bit Sonic titles to be released on modern platforms.

It is likely that SEGA will be looking more broadly at its back catalogue with regards to remakes, but with Sonic fans clamouring for a modern platform release of Sonic Unleashed (outside of Xbox's Backward Compatibility program) amongst other things, it feels like this is an area in which SEGA's stated goal of expanding Sonic's brand could fit quite well.

Fingers crossed for them re-releasing Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Sonic Heroes and Sonic Generations on Switch and other consoles. And I know there aren’t a lot of people who think positively of them, but I’d also like to see Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 4 re-released.

I’d love to see them dust off something like Sonic 06 and show what it’d be like if it were actually finished. I’m certain there’s a decent game in there and it still looks pretty good over 15 years later

Wow SEGA, it turns out that if you re-release older sonic games, fans would actually put in support and buy the games. Its almost as if you sitting on a goldmine that you refused to take advantage of for years, and only now discovered  how beneficial it can be.

Also, I understand if people weren't happy with Colours Ultimate and confused about Origins prices, but the point is that if we show that we want to buy older sonic games, they would be more likely to work on re-releases. this is the best way to convince them to give you the PC unleashed port that no one will shut up about.

Probably won’t happen but I would like a remaster of Burning Rangers.

With all due respect, honestly screw Sonic if that’s the plan. Give me a Jet Set Radio Future remake. Give me Persona 3 and Trauma Center. Give me Skies of Arcadia and Billy Hatcher and Burning Rangers. It’s very good that we’ve gotten remakes/revivals of some of their back catalog already like Panzer Dragoon and Super Monkey Ball, but there’s still a lot of work to do to bring the rest of it into the modern era. And I’d prefer any of those to another buggy release where I have to spend most of the game as the Werehog anyways.

Really hoping for a Sonic Unleashed port to PC on Steam. That in my opinion is a much better game to mod than Sonic Generations.

The upgrades we give Sonic in Unleashed are permanent and the platforming is smooth and not slippery at all, unlike in Generations where we need to switch around several skills that improve the gameplay, and Sonic controls horribly if he lacks simple things such as stopping quicker or getting up right after getting hit… Those are the examples on top of my head right now. And in Unleashed the light dash works in every row of rings, not just the ones the game lets you use it in.

This could be an opportunity to bring more games to PC that only exist on console, such as Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity.

And Sonic Heroes and Riders, though already in PC, don’t have a Steam release yet, and if they did, they’d become more available for everyone, and probably be easier to mod.

For sure. Adventure through to Heroes and later Generations were pretty well received games to my knowledge, alright Heroes was more mixed overall. I unironicially enjoy Shadow a lot and while I don’t return to Sonic 4 very often, I did get some joy out of it when I first played it. My pipe dream would be 06 but I know that its history alone puts it off the table.

In all honesty, it’s mainly the side and handheld games of the 2000s that I’d like to see made more accessible. The Riders, Rush, Rivals and Storybook games are some of my favourite offerings in the series but limited to the consoles they came out on. Would be great to have a chance to experience then again on modern systems and in the case of Rivals, to be able to play then for the first time.

I'd love more Saturn games, the rpgs
    I'm a mark for 2d and sprites.
If they could do it for cotton.....
Except they don't have source code.for.some.stuff like panzer dragoon saga,
Need a proper 32bit modern game engine for 2d sprites
The attempts at.that style just comes off.poorly in modern times
But thier backlog IPs is huge, also rip physical
Also rip "finished.and polished on release
Even nintendo flagship Mario with Mario oddesy had a day 1 patch

Believe me, if they hadn’t rushed it for the 15th anniversary, I bet Sonic ’06 would’ve been a good game. In fact, if they ever decide to take another crack at it, I bet the subtitle would be “Unrushed”.
