  • Yuji Naka: Sonic Titles to Appeal to Younger Audience

SEGA recently held a Consumer Conference in Japan, which featured a number of high-level developers and executives speaking about the future of the publisher's franchises. Yuji Naka was among the speakers, and presented an overview of the upcoming Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and Sonic Advance, concluding that future titles will look to appeal to younger audiences.

After speaking of the link-up communication between the Gamecube and Game Boy Advance Sonic titles, Naka showed a chart to the audience that featured detailed market research on the age of consumers most likely to be interested in a Sonic game. He revealed that the age group most interested in Sonic was much younger than the typical SEGA player.

Based on this information, Naka said that he wanted to make Sonic games to appeal to the younger generation of gamers, so that future titles will become successful. Sonic Adventure 2, in contrast, is largely seen as a more 'mature' Sonic story, so the impact this may have will be more simplistic stories. Time will tell how this will pan out.
