  • Whitehead and Headcannon Not Involved with Sonic Superstars, But Were Once in Talks for Next 2D Sonic

Whenever Sonic Mania 2 isn't in development, all the other characters should be asking "Where's Sonic Mania 2?"

Though Takashi Iizuka focused on who IS making Sonic Superstars in a recent interview with VGC, he also discussed two notable groups who aren't involved: Christian Whitehead and Headcannon, the developers behind 2017's Sonic Mania... though not for a lack of trying.

    Quote

When we were making Sonic Mania and the game was finished and Chris was done, we had a conversation with Chris and the team about what the next 2D game we make should be [...] We had some concepts and ideas laid out between the teams, but we couldn't kick off the project. And so it disappeared for a while with Chris and the team.

Iizuka doesn't specify what challenges halted the conceptual next 2D entry from Whitehead and Headcannon; however, Sonic Team would continue to work with Headcannon on a Retro Engine remake of Sonic 3 & Knuckles for Sonic Origins and further content for the upcoming Plus expansion.

Just spitballing, but it could have ended up something as simple as a timing issue.

If Big Brass saw their involvement in Origins and Origins+ as priority 1, then there simply might not have been enough time left over to deliver a game in the window SEGA was comfortable with. Mania dropped in what, 2017? We already know those guys will get vocal if they feel that the product is being rushed, so no need to stress that time-frame with a game in 2023.

At the very least, it shows Sonic Team hasn't closed the door to another project in the future. He's hoping they get to something else with Sonic down the line.

not gonna lie, I'm a bit worried that jun screws up the soundtrack. I just don't trust him with the classic stuff anymore, see sonic 4 and the horrible new sonic 3 tracks where even the beta versions from '94 sounded way better than what we got in origins.

But we haven't really heard anything official from the OST yet, so I hope for the best.

Ech...I dunno. Knowing Sega I feel like something weird got in the way of further collaboration, especially since they were already working with Headcannon to produce Sonic 3 & Knuckles so they had a steady working relationship as it was.

I think there are other composers involved in creating music for the game but Senoue has the authority on what gets into the game.

Don't know how to quote FReaK on here, but the Sonic 3 tracks in Origins aren't actually new versions done by Jun Senoue (except for the the Super theme), they're even earlier prototype renditions from the 90's and there's a lot of evidence to support this, mainly that they don't sound like Sonic 4 like the actual new track does.

I don't have a source for this at the moment, but I thought at one point Ian Flynn said that the Seasons of Chaos IDW comic special was made up of plans for a possible sequel to Sonic Mania that didn't go forward. Does that sound familiar to anyone else?

I'd love to see more from these specific developers! They brought so much to the table with Mania, and I am surprised I haven't played any of their original games yet! Honestly can't wait to see what happens with them.

If I recall correctly, Ian said that the the comic was just structured in a way that was essentially a shadow pitch for a classic Sonic game. He never said anything about it being an actual thing that was planned to exist, nor about it being inspired by plans made for Mania 2. It was just a fun little thing.
