  • Sonic X Shadow Generations Won't Have Chao Gardens, But Sonic Team Considering Their Return

    "Everybody wants it!"

    Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka is keen to let everyone know that Chao Gardens will not be included as a new feature in Sonic X Shadow Generations. He made the point very clear in a new interview at Summer Game Fest. However, he's hinted that "at some time" in the future the studio may revisit the concept.

    Speaking with VGC over the weekend, the SEGA exec was asked about the above screenshot released by their PR team, illustrating an updated cinematic that features Chao in the background. It's led a lot of people in the community to believe that Chao raising is coming back in a big way. But if it is, it won't be in the upcoming Sonic Generations remaster.

    "Thank you for bringing this up, because it is something we want properly communicated so that there’s no confusion! There is no Chao Garden in Sonic X Shadow Generations," Iizuka replied.

    "There are Chao that appear on the key visual and art work, and the reason is because there’s a Chao Rescue gameplay feature. For those who played Sonic Generations already, there is additional gameplay through this feature. But just to be clear, there’s no Chao Garden in this game."

    Before your dreams get totally crushed, Iizuka was asked a follow-up question on this, asking whether he would consider bringing the feature back in the future. To which he added;

    "At some time, yes, because we hear the same thing. Everybody wants it!"

    Sonic X Shadow Generations (and Sonic Generations before it) is billed as a celebration of Sonic (and now Shadow's) past, focusing on core platforming gameplay. As a result, it's difficult to see Chao Gardens become an added feature of the game. But it's nice to know that Iizuka-san is thinking about it (or at least, is hearing about it!).

    Chao Gardens in Sonic Generations doesn't make sense, but you can tell that they understand what the fans want with their conspicuous inclusion in the key art. Definitely a sign of good things to come. Add to that the rumor of a mobile Chao Garden game (it's ten years too late, but whatever) I'm thinking that, after milking the Classic era for all they could, they'll be locking into the entire Adventure era now. And that includes Chao.

    He's not lying....I'm they will be back in the future...in the inevitable Sonic Adventure Remaster 😉

    It’s also odd they added those chao but not Big, Jet, or Omega, who were also planned for the original draft of the game.

    At this point I fear my desires for a modern Chao Garden are completely unrealistic and cannot be sated no matter how good a new iteration of it is. It's just been too long.

    Chao Gardens were good side games to play in parallel with the main game. They increased the replay value, because you could always replay a level to grind resources for the Chao Garden, even if you finished the story mode.

    There need to be a right balance between the main adventure and the Chao Gardens, because it's easy to mess it up and turn them into frustration. Some players already consider annoying that you have to complete the Chao Garden challenges in order to get all the emblemsin the Adventure games (not my case, I love them, but still).

    I don't think the modern Sonic Team would be able to make a good experience and balance it with the main game, so I'm not really that desperate about wanting them back because I know that they will likely disappoint me... but still, I wish they were back.

    Besides, Chao Gardens in Sonic x Shadow Generations would have worked well because of Sonic and Shadow: play as Sonic, grow an Hero Chao, play as Shadow, grow a Dark Chao. The game has a pinball minigame, could have had Chao Gardens as well.

    I was just thinking that modern ST would probably mess Chao Garden up, or at least it would come with issues to be fixed gradually with time. I am actually okay with them being in side games if they are back at all, before adding them in a main game, or at least test them out first.

    They added the Chao because there's new chao collection missions to the existing levels of Generations. This is adding something new to existing content.

    Adding in Big, Jet and Omega would probably mean making new levels which they aren't doing, since the newer creations is based on the Shadow content.
