We're still gradually seeing more details come out about Sonic X Shadow Generations. The recent trailer was only the beginning, with gameplay and interviews now appearing. A new interview from Video Games Chronicle has just revealed a bunch more details to unpack, including the news that Sonic Team themselves are the ones developing the remaster!
There isn't any other studios handling this remaster. Iizuka himself confirms that Sonic Team has developed it in Japan. The game's director is Katsuyuki Shigihara, who was a designer on the original Sonic Generations. However, Iizuka does say that there are other Generations veterans on the team for this game. So, if you've been worried that the spirit of Sonic Generations wouldn't remain in this title, then that news may help ease your worries a little!
That was only one of a bunch of interesting details we learned in this interview about Sonic X Shadow Generations. We now know that there are no Chao Gardens, though Iizuka expressed a desire to bring them back someday. We now know that gameplay from the 3DS version of the original Generations isn't in this either, which makes it highly unlikely that 3DS levels aren't either. The development team "looked at what games were popular and which stages were popular within those" to decide which levels Shadow would be going through in this.
Even the future is looking interesting, and not just because Sonic Team may bring Chao Gardens back someday. Iizuka wants the team to make more open-zone games. He re-confirmed an openness to do more Sonic remasters. They even seem to have expressed an interest in giving characters their own dedicated year of content, just like Shadow is getting this year. Needless to say, at the same time Iizuka closed some doors in regards to Sonic X Shadow Generations, he's opened up a lot more for Sonic games as a whole in the future.
