  • Sonic Frontiers: Sonic's Birthday Bash Is Out Now, Here's Everything In It

This birthday bash bears a bit bigger bounty than believed before.

If you've been anxiously waiting for the latest Sonic Frontiers update... well, chances are you've already downloaded and started playing "Sonic's Birthday Bash," but for everyone else, hey, it's out now across all platforms. A few features were highlighted in this morning's Sonic Central presentation, but a full update list has been detailed in a news post on Steam. Here's what you can expect when you jump in:

    • The islands have been decorated for Sonic's birthday, and Sonic has a new costume to go with it.
    • You'll also find another new costume, "Frontier Elite."
    • The Koco will now appear in different costumes across the island.
    • There are now 24 new Jukebox songs hidden in the game.
    • You can now play in New Game+, restarting the game with all your stats and skill tree unlocks.
    • You can unlock and use Sonic's Spin Dash.
    • The Open Zone areas have new challenges.
    • Island completion percent is now available on multiple screens.
    • Cyber Space level results will show colored marks based on which special abilities you've used, including the Homing Dash, the Spin Dash, changing jump deceleration, and Cyber Space Power Boost.
    • There are additional settings for...
      • Rate of jumping deceleration,
      • Dramatic camera angles during special attacks,
      • Decelerate when stopping,
      • Maintain boost when jumping,
      • "BGM Change" in Cyber Space stages,
      • And clearing your times in timed challenge modes (such as Cyber Space levels).
    • Rhea Island's towers have been rebalanced for Easy difficulty.
    • Other bug fixes.

Though we were expecting a few of these, like the birthday events and new Koco, the inclusion of a New Game+, deceleration, and the Spin Dash are welcome additions. For those who are looking for an excuse to dip back into the game, this update's new configurations compliment the previous update's challenges and sets a pretty high bar for this year's Third Update featuring new character and story content.

What songs have been added to the Juke Box?

Unlocks for all the Island Movements as far as I can tell (basically, whenever you progress the Island’s story, the theme music evolves slightly in game - whether this was noticed or not is down to the player).

Might seem lame at first glance - but there’s quite a few here that I missed listening to once I surpassed a certain storypoint, and the ability to play some of Chaos Islands tracks anywhere (some of the best music in the game) is a very welcome addition to the juke box for me personally.

Mild spoilers on how to unlock content in the update:

    Spoiler

Frontier Elite costume is unlocked by getting 100% across all islands (not just mapping them out, but doing everything. Similarly, to unlock the spindash, you have to S Rank all the action chain challenges on each island. New Game+ becomes available by fighting the final boss (the regular one).

That’s good - at least there’s now a reward for doing EVERYTHING on each island (I presume now we can visually see all the collectible information on the map screen hubs (as a checklist finally) that it this will greatly help completionists.

I’m not sure locking the Spindash behind all the S-Grade action chain challenges was such a smart idea though (unless this is super easy).

Sure, Spindash is not a move set that’s really required or designed for this game - but I did think it would be a toggle like the rest of the new updates.

On the subject of toggles - there is more than one toggle in the options now that influences Sonic’s movement in cyberspace stages that Sonic Team would weirdly have you believe (was playing around with this last night) - very good.

I think my personal addendum/critique to this QOL feature would be that they have multiple presets added in next time rather than just “default” for each slider and whatever the player wants. Although I appreciate the accessibility, I also just want to get on with it and play than spend hours experimenting.

It couldn’t hurt to have something along the lines of “classic / modern / loose / tight” presets available in menu. Then I’d also get a better understanding of where I want to take the slider. The 0-100 setting and it’s influence on Sonic actually doesn’t translate to me as how this affects sonic in either direction until you mess around with it, and because bringing up the options menu isn’t something that is “snappy” to access quickly (like say, the jukebox) then I feel less inclined to want to go in and through the options to change stuff EVERY time, when actually it could be a fun feature if integrated smartly. Hopefully something they’ll think about for Frontiers 2.

The point is though, Sonic Team are learning and adapting and listening for feedback. Whilst It’s weird seeing this play out in real time via updates in this game and Twitter - and equally I can see how how the “global play test”comment has pissed some off - I think the comment was pretty bang on. The game is out and the game is great anyway, so what does it matter? Now that we have the ability to mess around with stuff and engage with the devs somewhat this is beneficial to all.

going through the beginning of the game with all the birthday stuff turned on completely and utterly destroys the emotional impact it originally had and it's fantastic.

i haven't unlocked the spin dash yet, but all the new settings are pretty cool. i instantly turned off jumping deceleration, lmao. luckily for me, i already obsessively collected every memory token on every island, so 100%'ing each island should be at least slightly easier lollll
