  • Sonic Dash Introducing New Character Card Unlock System

    Sayonara, Character Tokens!

    Love playing Sonic Dash but absolutely hated having to collect (and lose) all of those tokens in order to feel like you were progressing through the character roster? Well hate no more, because SEGA HARDlight has announced it will be revamping its character reward system by introducing new 'character cards'.

    The idea is this: players grab Character Cards that appear on the track (in much the same way as Character Tokens before), but these items will then go into a special collection where you will get to keep them forever. Meaning that it will only be a matter of time before you earn enough cards to unlock and upgrade your characters.

    According to the announcement from HARDlight, there will be four rarities of card available - Common, Rare, Epic and Legendary, with Legendary cards only being available during special events.

    It sounds an awful lot like the system in place for the mobile developer's other game, Sonic Forces Speed Battle - which is a system that makes sense, so it's good that HARDlight is integrating it into its older Dash title to keep things up to date.

    The Character Card update will be released on Thursday July 13th.

    I'm a little bit confused by this, does this mean characters from past events can be unlocked when playing casually or does this just apply to the ogs?

    Aside from "legendary cards" like Super Sonic that are exclusive to events, all cards can be found randomly by playing the game anytime, and they are divided in classes just like in Forces, which makes them more or less rare. I actually love this because characters were often locked behind events or paywalls before, this is much better at least, it will still take time to unlock them though, but I can play when I want instead of urging during an event.

    Am I the only one who doesn't like this? I always vastly preferred the way Dash did things as opposed to Speed Battle's money-hungry RNG lootbox style system, so I desperately hope it will be differently implemented here. Can't wait for "Tails' Vault" to make an appearance soon and be the only feasible way to unlock characters within each event's time limits. Ugh.

    Of course, I probably only found the token system easy because I have almost every character fully upgraded and I'm absolutely cracked at the game (20mil+ high score lmao)... but still.

    I hope they keep adding to the game, I'd love to have a sonic game to play idly but its never been able to keep my interest for longer than a month.

    Update is out now. It's similar to the old token system before, with one very clear upside and one very clear downside respectively - You can unlock characters at any time without having to wait for their event to start, and it's only 200 cards to unlock characters (they spawn at an identical rate to tokens from before)... but no events also means there's also no way to focus on one character to unlock. You'll see cards from characters you have already unlocked or fully upgraded on the track.

    Genuinely, not a fan of this update. With tokens you just keep playing til you get the character unlocked. With random cards showing up and legendaries being rarer, you're at the whim of RNG. I much preferred my time and effort be rewarded over "lol get lucky"

    I jumped off the Dash train around 6/ 7 years ago, and dont miss it tbh. There was only so much you could do and constant Zazz battles did my nut in. I remember even then, the tokens for Hello Kitty Sonic and the angry birds characters were absurd to get.

     

    Now, Runners, i do miss. Bar the gamble wheel of doom. Great game.
