  • RUMOR: Sonic Generations-Related Announcement Coming Soon (UPDATE: State of Play Confirmed)

Sonic's 20th anniversary classic might be making a return.

UPDATE 1/29/2024: A State of Play has been announced, which lends much more credibility to this rumor.

In the latest of what has been a surprisingly fruitful month for reportable rumors, it appears Sonic Generations may be getting some kind of announcement in the coming days at a currently-unconfirmed Playstation State of Play digital event. This rumor comes courtesy of of XboxEra co-founder/podcast co-host Nick Baker, who posted a cryptic tweet on his Twitter account:

    IMG_2137.thumb.jpeg.183656b84a8ba0370042ceca63162d5d.jpeg

"Sonic will live in the shadow of his generation" could mean a few things, but "Sonic Generations port" seems to be the most obvious takeaway. Alternatively, it could be something that involves Shadow in some way. We do know a Shadow skin is coming to Superstars, though that would be a rather modest thing to include in a list of games. If I personally had to guess, it's a Sonic Generations remaster for modern platforms that adds Shadow as a playable character.

Now, you're probably asking "Nuckles, why are you giving this guy the time of day," at least if your treating this as skeptically as you should any rumor. Well, it's because Baker has done this before. Last September, he posted cryptic hints of an upcoming State of Play, and was one-hundred-percent accurate. As he mentions in the Twitter exchange posted above, he seems to get lists on some of the featured games ahead of time. This is what he posted last year:

As always, this is a rumor, so don't take it as news. Nothing has been confirmed. But as far as rumors go, this is one I feel more inclined to believe. So, we may be getting some sort of Sonic game announcement in the coming days, from an upcoming State of Play. If a State of Play is announced in the next couple days, we'll be sure to update this post. If this rumor ends up being true, be sure to stay tuned to Sonic Stadium for future updates.

Do you think Project Unleashed will be ported over to the Generations remaster if it's going to be made in Hedgehog Engine 2?

Not gonna lie, if we're truly getting a Generations remaster... Well, I'll still look forward to it. But why Generations instead of the Adventure games and/or Unleashed?

Fans have been requesting remakes for those games for years, much more so than Generations from what I've seen. And those three games could seriously use the remaster treatment: Adventure 1 and Adventure 2's respective graphics haven't aged the best and they could use some gameplay tune-ups (among other things), while Unleashed isn't readily accessible outside of Xbox Series S and could also use some QoL improvements. Generations only really needs to be ported to modern consoles, but at least it's on PC whereas Unleashed isn't.

Colors Ultimate I could understand being necessary since Colors was a Wii exclusive, so the game had to be remade to work on PC and modern consoles. But Generations...? I'm sorry, it just feels like remastering a game that doesn't really need it over the games that do need remastering, and are highly requested (if not the top requests) by fans.

Again, I'll still look forward to a Generation remaster and certainly play it if it proves good. This is just my thoughts on this news.

Because "Fans" are not who these remasters are for. They're to put another $60 box on the shelves for younger players who haven't experienced them yet. They're perfect for dry periods because to the fans that got into Sonic with the movies it's basically like getting a new game. No obvious mechanical fuckups either unlike SA1/2/Unleashed so it'll get decent reviews with minimal effort short of some catastrophic fuck up ala Colors Ultimate.

You just about answered your own question here. The Adventure games and Unleashed are three quarters crap and would need major changes to be palatable to a mainstream audience. Generations by comparison likely needs far less work done for a rerelease/remaster, and is therefore cheaper for Sega to produce.

Y'know, I wonder why they'd choose the State of Play to announce it and not the next Nintendo Direct. If I were them, I'd let the Nintendo audience know firsthand they're finally getting the chance to play console Generations after 13 years. But I guess choosing Sony gives them a better headstart, even when it's clear the Direct isn't that far off.

Besides, they might be saving their Sonic spotlight for the Paris Olympics reveal, who knows.

Another thought: Generations was originally made for Sonic's 20th Anniversary, and in about four days, Sonic 3 will be turning 30. So do you think that maybe... they'll do something special for Knuckles this time?

    ...Heh, of course not

I think if there was an Olympics tie-in, it would've been revealed by now.

The Olympics series is pretty much dead at this point.

People are either panic buying in worry that Sega is going to delisted it or it's actually about to be delisted.

Because Generations is already on Windows so most of the work of getting it on modern consoles is already done. In comparison to the Adventure games, which would actually need to be remade to get them up to some standard of quality, "remastering" Sonic Generations could basically amount to "run at 4K @ 60FPS" and the game would be perfectly acceptable by 2024 standards. Unleashed would be more desirable since it's never had a PC port and it's trapped on PS3 for people who don't want an Xbox, but Unleashed also has a much worse reputation so it is what it is.

I would like them to remaster Sonic Generations, It's one of my favorite games and seeing it on next-gen consoles would be great, but I would also like to see other games remastered like Sonic adventures 1 and 2, it sound incredible.

By next-gen, do you mean PS5 or PS6? Since it has backwards compatibility (and 60FPS with FPS boost), it seems like Xbox doesn't need it. The graphics are already impressive and hold up a decade later.

So, if this turns out true, let's just hope Sega learned from their mistakes with Sonic Colors Ultimate and made sure this was a better made game. Now, why would this be like gaining weight? (No offense to anyone in advance) It would be because it's a fat chance.

Just fix the bugs in the Steam version and port that, Sega. Thanks. None of that additional crap you dumped on top of with Colours, which Generations doesn't need in the first place. This is a game from deep into the PS360 generation where already so long as a game had a good art style it looks basically the same as a game as today (just at a lower resolution and a shittier framerate).

It's a shame too, because I think there are a couple of things that could had been added to the Colors' remasters that would had made it a meaningful update or remaster. But it's so obvious that whoever was in charge did not want to spend any resources to make any meaningful additions or changes. I'm not as big on Colors as I was when it came out I would still say it got done dirty by how basic it was, even before you get into the technical incompetence of that port.

So with that in mind (as well as also seeing how Origins was also mismanaged) I don't blame people making memes about a "remastered" Generations re-release having stuff like completely FUBAR'd lighting among other things. Sega themselves has set the bar that low.

I think if the weird-ass and challenging level design of the Frontiers DLC is anything to go by, there's no reason to assume added levels would be naff, it just entirely depends on who is handling them.  We've never really had a 3D Sonic port/remaster with added levels in anything close to recency to really give any inkling.

I myself haven't played Frontiers, so I can't claim authority on comprehensive comparisons on Frontiers' level design to that of Generations. But I get the impression that regardless, Kishimoto and company's attitudes to design would prevail on the topic of making new levels for Generations. Which to me evokes the usual stuff that we've seen from their past gameography (Frontiers, Forces, Lost World, Colors) instead of anything resembling the level design philosophy of Generations or Unleashed.

I’ll take who asked for this for $500 alex

Sega have some weird love boner for their early 2010s games so they will never touch unleashed, and heroes/adventure would need a ground up rebuild so its placed in the “too much money and effort” basket.

Generations on the other hand is easy - the game runs at 4K at 60fps on pc with minimal effort so the work is already cut out for whoever they outsource to do this remaster. I’m not surprised why they picked it even if I think half the games boring.

¿Por próxima generación te refieres a PS5 o PS6? Dado que tiene compatibilidad con versiones anteriores (y 60 FPS con aumento de FPS), parece que Xbox no lo necesita. Los gráficos ya son impresionantes y se mantienen una década después.

I am referring to the current consoles, Xbox one series X and S, PS5 and Nintendo Switch

The 3DS version wasn't great, but it did have a few nice things.

-Water Palace was solid, it had some interesting gimmicks such as the balancing platforms floating on water, and the bubble machine thing... the big badnik at the end of the classic level was interesting.

-The Big Arm bossfight was great, Biolizard was ok maybe?

-The "Got Ring?" airship working as a bumper in Radical Highway was neat too, but the level wasn't much fun sadly.

-The Time Eater bossfight was slightly better done compared to the HD version.

I don't think there was enough worthy content to justify a port of the entire 3DS game inside of this rumored remaster; I think it would be better to just "port" (or remake completely) the good stuff from it instead (basically just Big Arm and Water Palace).

Regardless, I'm not expecting the 3DS version to be considered at all, they will probably just ignore it.

The 3DS version reviewed pretty poorly, and as I recall was rumoured to have been a bit of a rush job; I don't recall enjoying it particularly and noticed a lot of sloppy cut corners.  I think the only way we're seeing that again is in some kind of wider collection of the handheld games, and that's unlikely to be on the horizon anytime soon.

I’m so confused, is this still a Sonic Generations remaster or something else entirely?

Shadow was such a minuscule part of Generations that I just find it weird he’d be elevated to headliner in that game of all things

If I have to guess, it's probably gonna be a Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury thing? It's hard to say
