  • New Sonic Frontiers Patch Makes Easy Mode Easier, Adjusts Knuckles Glide, And More

The Final Horizon has been made a little more final.

Sonic Frontiers' final update, The Final Horizon was...divisive, to say the least. Our own Dreadknux wrote a particularly scathing review about it. A new patch, released today, seems to attempt to fix some of the DLC's more egregious issues, at least on easy mode. Check out a full list of the patch's fixes below!

The following fixes are specific to easy mode:

    • The level design for the trial towers has been changed.
    • The trials of the 4 Koco masters have been made easier, and Sonic's attack power has been adjusted.
    • King Koco's trial has been made easier. You start with 600 rings instead of 400 and the titans have been made weaker. Sonic's perfect parry now lasts much longer. We've also received unconfirmed reports that perfect parry has been made more generous in the other difficulty modes. This is not mentioned in the patch notes, and I can't tell.

The following apply to all difficulties:

    • Pink panels will now respawn after a certain amount of time or distance. This will be a big help for the second trial tower.
    • When Amy, Tails and Knuckles are leveled up, the attack and defense parameters of certain techniques will be increased.
    • Amy, Tails and Knuckles perfect parry is now more generous, and much more generous in easy mode.
    • Cyberspace changes will reset your time if you die without hitting a checkpoint.
    • The patch notes mention other bug fixes. The only one specifically mentioned is a glitch that caused audio to not play during sub-events.
    • Knuckles glide now has no wind up animation and can turn much tighter. Knuckles' glide is significantly better now, and much closer to his Adventure era maneuverability.

There is currently no English patch notes, but you can find a Google translated version of the Japanese patch notes here. Morio Kishimoto said in a tweet that this patch originally began so that they could fix one bug a customer contacted them about. But they couldn't "just stop there," so he and a small team ended up, in his words, "overdoing it," making this whole patch as an early Christmas present.

As you can see, we posted some videos showcasing the changes. We're currently busy with Sonic Dream Team coverage, but if we have time we'll post some more footage of the patch to our Youtube.

Sonic Frontiers Patch 1.41 is available now on all platforms!

-Four Trials of Masters: Default difficulty, Sonic's attack power level adjusted

-Instructor King's Trial: Adjusted the maximum number of rings possessed and the physical strength of each giant god.

[Partial review of the operability of Emmy, Knuckles, and Tails]

-Adjusted the reception time for Just Parry to be more relaxed
*Even more relaxed when the difficulty level is "Enjoy"

    - Significantly increases Knuckles' turning power when gliding.

    *Excluding Cyber Space Challenge.

    ■Other bug fixes
Fixed bugs such as the phenomenon where audio was not played in sub-events.

Second, I think the phrase "Super Complete Battle" is so unbelievably awesome that it needs to be added to the English version of the game.  In fact, don't stop there; that needs to be the title of an anime, dammit!

It has been done. Thanks for telling me that. It is now in the original post in a quote.

Ah, so that's what why Final Horizon was so miserable to play. I didn't have the game set to enjoy mode.

Anyway, I guess it's good that they fixed some of the problems, but I'm sure as hell not reinstalling the game to see if it's any fun now.

Also "enjoy this world" constantly plays at full volume.

I'm both surprised and glad they chose to fix some of the issues in the final update. I figured they might just wash their hands of the whole game and leave it at that, but they didn't. I know most might jump to being cynical or bitter, but I still want to try and be positive by appreciating their dedication.

I might go back to the game to test out it's new difficulty changes. I don't mind doing that, while others will most likely feel differently, I'm sure.

YES. I was beginning to lose hope that they'd do it, but they did! Now I can actually beat the wretched Master Koko trial and finish the DLC.

Let me say that when you do it, know that I will be wishing you luck on doing all that! 😉

Just had to boot up the update tonight, and holy crap, it's like night and day.

I just beat the Master Koko trial with over 500 rings left over. It legit went from being insanely hard to laughably easy. Part of me feels kind of dissatisfied at just how ridiculously easy it became, but after the total hell it was playing it originally, I honestly don't care all that much and am just glad it's finally over.

I get to finally finish the game.

Titan fights are not mechanically inspired enough for the level of challenge the original Koko trial tried to force it to be, they’re spectacle first and foremost with gameplay mechanics a distant second. I’ll admit it’s a shame the challenge was decidedly wiped away as someone who suffered through it, but if it makes first time players have a good time and not be screaming bloody murder then good for them.

I earned my stripes pounding thru the trials on max difficulty, so I could care less about those adjustments. Makes it more accessible for other people I guess.

It is interesting to see they are continuing support on frontiers even beyond all the free DLC.

The characters are overpowered as heck now.  I fought Caterpillar and Tank as Tails of all characters, and they went down faster than you can blink.

For those who tried after the patch, is there still some challenge?

Because, ridiculously hard difficulty aside, I liked the challenge from the third update, in general, minus the towers, the Master Koco challenge and of course the guardians with other characters, it looks like they fixed those, as well as the perfect parry which was impossible on hard, but I hope the third update is still hard to be honest. It's supposed to be a DLC update so I kinda want it to be hard, not THAT hard though. I just hope the perfect parry is still a thing.

Also, I saw on Twitter that the movement for Knuckles glide is now much better. And yeah given these buggy games, updates and patches, I still think we should wait to play Sonic games...

Also, Kishimoto apologized for "overdoing it as usual", in my opinion he didn't have to because the game is flawed as fuck but the third update was extra love and work, obviously they needed to fix that so we could enjoy it, but he didn't have to apologize.

I hope someone can verify if the Easy Mode fixes were applied to the other difficulties too (to differing extents). This is a great update, I'm glad the devs put in the extra effort!

This is great news. Once I get those gold badnicks in superstars, I'll revisit Frontiers as that DLC was not enjoyable. This update may well help in this regards. Happy days.

I finished the DLC on easy...I hate myself for it, but I read SO MANY OTHERS did that as well. The easy mode actually makes the game "normal" honestly....but I'm glad they've acknowledged the problems and try to fix it.

I hope they didn't fix the infinite jump glitch with Knuckles. That was fun.

In any case, it's cool that they're still paying attention to this game, and want to put in the effort to fix what they got wrong. I finished it on easy and I'm shameless about it, and I probably won't go back to play it again, even with the patches, but I'm glad that other people get to enjoy it now if they couldn't before.

I'm glad they ended up fixing some of this stuff but I'm past ever playing this again at this point. They were a little too late on the draw here.

These are good changes for the kids that'll get this for Christmas I guess

So, it’s already wild that they did this. Bummer the deceleration rate for the trio is still busted, at least on switch, but it is what it is. I’ll survive and adapt. Knuckles’s glide feels really good now

but man, idk what they changed to the attack stuff for them, but I obliterated a hard mode Master Ninja+ as Knuckles at only lvl 17 attack 😳 that. Was. Awesome!

By the way, the Perfect Parry on Easy?  It lasts for a whole 10 seconds.  At least.  Yeah, and combine that with Easy giving you 600 rings instead of 400 along with having some strength upgrades to increase your damage output and the Master King trial is no issue anymore.  Wyvern still sucks on Hard though from my experience.
