  • New Sonic Frontiers Footage and Details in Nintendo Partner Showcase

Some more plot and character details too, including new antagonist 'Sage'.

Somewhere among the many farming games, the 3000 hours of Persona games, and revisionist history PAC-MAN, we got a few more details on Sonic Frontiers during today's Nintendo Direct showcase.

The Nintendo Partner Showcase featured about 20 seconds of new Sonic Frontiers footage, and our first look at the game's linear Cyber Space stages, a new character, and its general Switch performance.

While all of Sonic's combat tricks here had been revealed in previous videos, the absolute highlight was two of the game's Cyber Space stages, including a wild spaghetti-tangle of highways with glitched-out road signs, and the familiar Green Hill landscape (yes, internet, we all know you have strong opinions about where Green Hill is and isn't used, you don't need to remind us).

    Sonic-Frontiers-Cyber-Space-Green-Hill-2.jpg

    Image from Official Press Release

Sonic enters the stages via stone portals, and as the Summer Game Fest impressions state, they're in the format of forward-running boost-style platforming. In the Green Hill section, Sonic isn't beholden to his open world combat mechanics. One hit is enough to dispatch each of the Motobugs. The stages shown take place on an abstract geometric backdrop while wavy and twisted trails decorate the sky. The foreground is stylized with chromatic aberration in Green Hill and vertical scanlines in the highway environment. Upon leaving the level, Sonic is awarded a key.

We've also got our first... vaguely-story-related cutscene, introducing "Sage," a strange girl associated with Starfall Islands' overarching mystery. At the end of the footage, she's seen emanating a red "cyber" glow and hovering just above a geometric metal Palkia.

"Kronos Island," according to the official press release, is the first island of the game, and likely the one we've seen exclusively in the promotional footage thus far. Sonic arrives there upon escaping a cyberspace portal that engulfed him and his friends.

For those looking to get a glimpse of the game actually running on Switch (or within general Switch parameters), the compromises are in line with other open world games on the platform. Landscape fidelity drops at a bit closer distance, the visual effects are a little less flashy, and textures can be blurry up close. If Switch is your primary platform, these are the sacrifices that you've come to expect.

The footage shown ran at 30fps in spite of the 60fps feed, but for better or worse, the same could be said about the majority of other titles in the Showcase. I'm hesitant to judge certain aspects of the visuals too harshly, since YouTube compression tends to add artifacting and blur, but if graphics are your priority over portability, just expect to go for the PS5, Series X, or PC versions regardless.

We have a number of screenshots throughout the article, differentiated between official press release shots, and those taken from the YouTube video. The press release shots were provided in 4K, so it's safe to assume they're not from the Switch version.

Recent hands-on impressions vary wildly, from the absolutely positive to the utterly dire, and everything in between. Suffice to say this new footage will be controversial (as was the previous footage, and the footage before that), but we'll all be able to check the game out for ourselves when it launches this Winter.

It looks like we're getting original stages after all, although I couldn't tell if that city level was meant to be Skyscraper Scamper, a remade Route 99, or a brand new stage.

That is definitely not City Escape or Speed Highway even, if it is Skycraper Scamper (it might use those assets) I will take it over the whole Generations roster of zones.

Was definitely getting Route 99 vibes from the footage we saw!

Honestly wouldn't mind seeing GBA advance level themes brought to the 3D space if not any new zones/level themes

Well hey look at that, cyberspace isn't entirely remade zones.

Would be cooler if they bothered to design some actual Sonic levels for them, though, instead of dropping a bunch of rectangles into the void.

Looks nothing like Speed Highway. More like Skyscaper Scamper.

You know, for Switch footage that was pretty ok. By Switch standards of course.

I actually really like the highway level. I enjoy abstract stuff like that.

    Jotting down some quick thoughts:

    - Glad they showed what has to be Switch footage, and didn't just showcase the more powerful version with some disclaimer at the bottom. It's definitely taken some hits graphically, but the performance seems to be a consistent(?) 30fps, which is promising at least. The real question now will be the differences between docked and handheld mode.

    - Green Hill is 100% back. (Pretend to be shocked)

    - That city level... I initially thought it'd be Skyscraper Scamper, but - though it may be using some assets from it and other past city stages here and there - I can't honestly say it is Skyscraper Scamper, on accounts of the cyberspace-y background, lack of buildings and crazy-looking roads (even by Sonic standards). I would settle on just calling it "City" for now, but Forces already took that, so let's go with... I dunno, "Cyber City" or something?

    - MUSIC! Actual, non-ambient music! Not that I hate soft piano pieces, but a Sonic soundtrack just isn't right without those energetic bops to go with it, so this put a big smile on my face. It kinda gave me some major shonen anime vibes too, but that might just be me.

    - Oh yeah, there appears to be some kid...AI...thing in the CG clip at the end, so I suspect that might be SAGE (the AI that Eggman is... releasing? Testing? I don't quite remember).

I see now what they're going for with Cyberspace. Making levels that seem both cost-effective to make yet seemingly lengthy (according to impressions) and full of pathways, yet making the story work so that it still fits the context perfectly is super cool. Just based on the footage for the new city level, they seem to be leaning into the abstract with this. I'm all for this, really wanna see more.

One thing I notice is that the tubes aren't exclusive to this stage, you can see them in the background of green hill too, so maybe they're a part of the cyberspace aesthetic like the glitching sky?

I wonder if this might be on a similar wavelength to some of the random grind rails that show up, floating in the sky in the overworld.

    Interesting notice there.

Also, this may look like Green Hill from Generations and Forces, but with the background and floating islands, this seems to be a different kind of Green Hill. Just saying.

So, third image down, I wonder who that human is? I know we saw them in the trailer, but I wonder? With that red light in their hair, they may not be a natural, organic being.

    That is Sage:

She might very well be the main villain or an antagonist of sorts, given how we saw what might very well be her, controlling the beings that attack Sonic.

That could work too. Though I do miss the alliteration.

Yeah, it could be. IIRC (spoilering due to it being a leak still, and not officially revealed yet)

    Spoiler

I think Sky Sanctuary had these floating in the sky too? Even with the Death Egg in the background there, it's still possible the sky around it is also "glitchy" like with the aesthetic in the Green Hill and city stages.

So this could be a recurring theme for all cyberspace levels. (Though ngl, any time I hear about tubes in Sonic, my mind immediately thinks about the 8-bit Master System and Game Gear games, for some reason...)
