  • Iizuka Confirms Name of Sonic Superstars' New Character

    Trippin' on good vibes.

When Sonic Superstars was announced, SEGA was quick to reveal that the game would feature a new character designed by Sonic co-creator Naoto Ohshima. We got our first look at the character yesterday, and today we now have a name: Trip.

The name seems to be based on the fact that the character trips…a lot. Both in the game’s opening animation, and even in the one cutscene we have from the game:

Iizuka confirmed this in an interview IGN released today, which you can check out here. There’s still much we don’t know about this character, including their name (though their tail looks like a raccoon….or a Zigzagoon). Be sure to stay tuned for further details on Trip and Sonic Superstars!

Yeesh, Someone got the short end of the evolutionary stick.

Sonic characters are more or less named after their abilities. This dudes defining characteristic is that he is a klutz. Even Big gets to use his girth to throw his weight around.  This guy probably doesn't even roll so much as he falls and tumbles down a hill.

More importantly tho, with a shtick like that, I feel pretty confident that he's not a 1 for 1 replacement for Bean or Bark. So even if that duo doesn't show in SuperStars, there is still hope down the line if Nack has some staying power.

Funny how much things have changed in a decade.

SEGA going out of their way to market new characters and the absence of Green Hill Zone. A complete 180 from where we were in 2010.

I've always thought of the name "Trip" as exuding some level of suave coolness, or at a push something to do with electricity. I've never before thought about it in the sense of literally tripping over. It's cute. I like it. Can't wait to get a good look at him. And here's hoping that he takes off that ugly helmet at some point

I've got to wonder if, based on that interview, Trip is even truly a bad guy? He could well end up crossing both Eggman and Fang.

    What IS Trip?

I initially thought a robot, a bit like D-Fekt from Fire and Ice but I cant make out if its some form of animal / animal in a helmet like Infinite?

Would not be suprised if it is a robot, if its an eggman castoff...a prototype for Orbit/ Cubot maybe.

    Either way, cool!

Part of me is honestly wondering if Trip might be a familiar character in disguise. They've gone to notable lengths to hide his face.

Looking at his tail, I doubt it. His identity under the helmet will no doubt be revealed at some point though.

Okay my theory on Trip. First the name: Triple, a reference to him being the third antagonist, and a reference maybe to Triple Trouble.

Due to the cutscene with Fang, where he has a device and accidentally lets it slip away and causes Fang to get caught in the trap, I think Trip is clumsy, and ashamed of his own face hence the mask, so he hides himself, maybe Eggman will fire him and Sonic will help him, so eventually he takes off the mask and, judging by the tail he seems a tanooki or raccoon, he may become playable as the fifth character in the missing spot in the title card.

I would love being right, it's a simple plot but it would be great.

I'd be prone to losing my balance alot too if I spent the majority of the day wearing such heavy armor. This fella looks like the kinda kid who hides behind a mask cause they were bullied and never accepted in his original society (A little Infinite in them). And this lead to them being taken in by either Robotnik or Nack.

When comes the time comes to rip that helmet off, mostly likely they'll pull a Knuckles and be a redeemed hero. Or for more of a twist, make the cutesy little dweeb pull a Marx/Magalor and upsurp Eggman as a Tragic Villian final boss, though they'll likely survive and still redeem themselves after defeat.

Of course I wouldn't count on the later thing happening over the former.

Interesting 🤔 new character name called Trip I quite liked that name that Fang met and teaming up with. The more I hear more about Sonic Superstars the more I get excited for this game because I get vibes nostalgia and memories from other classic Sonic games which this Is based upon but In a 3D game environment.

I also think they will be redeemed by the end, they don't seem like the overly villain type from what little we have seen already. Perhaps Eggman or Fang have tricked them much like Knuckles originally.

I've seen a lot of people say they think Trip is a Thorny Devil lizard, it does match the tail pattern and colors. But I'm still sticking with my Pangolin idea, they are from the Northstar Islands, which has giant animals, and there's a species of Pangolin called the Giant Pangolin. The tail stripes could be the segmented armour plates, they do lack the horns on the helmet tho. I'm also leaning towards a female on this one, not sure why but both the classic heroes and the villains could use more female rep.

I'm just happy they are building on the classic cast after all these years, hoping it's a good sign they plan to keep doing classic content moving forward.

Trip: Not much is known yet about Trip, the mysterious girl first encountered by Fang on the Northstar Islands. While a bit clumsy, Trip is heavily armored and has been enlisted by Fang and Dr. Eggman to protect and guide them around the wonders of this uncharted region.
