Anyone out there with shameful Sonic-related secrets?

My shameful secrets:

  • admitting to myself I still like the Sonic games, despite the absolute horrors people say about them (and the fanbase itself). I basically don't tell people I like Sonic games because of the reputation they haev.
  • Eggman's post-Adventure design (that is, not dressed in a clown suit w/a cape) makes my !!! tremble. The confidence with which he speaks (the voice), the determination, and of course the engineering genius. His canonically (?) being much taller than me at six foot one makes matters worse. He's a fashionable mofo. He's got dat stache. According to Heroes, he's a romantic and a feminist (though this seems contradicted in a later game?). Dear lord, I am smitten by Eggman.

I hate when people have to hide the fact they are sonic fans like this. Yet, it seems to be true sometimes. It depends on the kind of person you are around. There are so many of these FPS nuts that if you say you like sonic, they just look at you like something is wrong with you. It really is a shame there are people out there that have given fans a bad reputation to where we need to hide like this. I'm honestly not ashamed of it at all. Most of my shirts are all the sonic tshirts and I wear them most of the time when I go out. I've gotten many complements over the years from them that they look nice, both a few kids but also many adults as well.

Ha ha, it actually comes from the place you'd least expect it.

I've been an active member in the following fandoms: Pokemon (my first fandom, though I stick to very few websites), Paper Mario (the lack of any big Paper Mario websites made the "community" aspect difficult though), EarthBound (there's basically only Starmen.net), Pikmin (no idea what's going on with this nowadays), and Smash Bros. (smashboards, though my posting there was minimal). When it comes to video games, I've only ever been involved in Nintendo fandoms (all games that, as far as I know, have always been first-party Nintendo games, too). At pretty much all of these fandoms, I've seen the Sonic series be derided as past its prime and basically just trying too hard to catch up. The fandom is viewed as a bunch of sexually immature furries (the kind to strap dildos to their Sonic plushies and post their underage porn on the internet), or as old people who are never satisfied by anything and just want Sonic to "be how it used to be."

Oh, and of course the general shame of admitting to people you like a series aimed at children. This applies to all of my previous fandoms (nowadays if my parents see me playing any video game, they say "oh, I thought you were over that." They don't know the difference between a Koopa, Giegue, and Tails). The only people I know who exclusively play FPS games are around 8 years old so their opinions aren't really relevant to my life. Not that the opinions of people should generally be relevant to my life, but theirs are even less relevant.

It's funny because it's not like the Sonic series is the only one to have rabid fans making up their own palette-swap characters that go on Mary-Sue adventures and seduce the protagonist. Pokephilia is a real thing is all I have to say on this issue. But the Sonic fandom has just made such a bad name for itself, and has probably done more to harm the name of the series than the series itself. People don't look down on me for playing "kiddy" games or poorly designed games; they look down on me because they think I'm associated with the aforementioned Sonic-dildo-girl (this was a real thing, by the way).

Thankfully I think this attitude has been dying down, although I believe its specter will always hang over the Sonic fan community like dirty laundry.

So I have a tendency to come up with really silly names and/or phrases for various things in the land of Sonidom. I've mentioned some here and there before, but here's a list consisting of a good number of them:

SEGA Sonic Arcade - "Saw-nic".

Sonic & Tails/Sonic Chaos Title Screen - "Bathroom's That Way, Mate." Due to the way Sonic happens to be pointing.

Veg-O-Fortress - "Check Out the Death Counts".

Knuckles' Chaotix - "Proto-Colours". Amusement parks, geddit?

Sonic Labyrinth - "Sonic: Trapped in Tesco Land".

Can You Feel the Sunshine - "Wrong One". It should actually be Living in the City you should be using to associate your silly Tails Doll stories with. *nerdy laugh*

Sonic 3D Blast - "Checkers".

Perfect Chaos - "The Hand Puppet of Destruction".

Void - "Mr. Maybelline". But he's a seperated half of Illumina, so he wasn't born with it.

Final-Hazard - "A Children's Guide to Sex Education".

Egg Saucer - "The Spiral of Bastard's Yet to Come". Not over the top in any way.

Season 1 of Sonic X - "Ah Need a Mecha Ta Clobba Dat Dere Sawnik".

Neo Metal Sonic - "Anime Metal Sonic."

Sonic Battle's Guard Robos - "E-621 Poundland".

G-Merl - "Quick Gizoid". Chaos Control is his weakness.

Black Doom - "Ten Packs a Day Vagina Face Man". Too much?

Babylon Guardian - "Don King". It's the hairstyle.

Wave Ocean - "Diet Coast".

Flame Core - "Red Mountain 0.5".

'06 Robotnik - "Young Ivo Cosplaying Gerald". But you knew this one.

'06 Mathematician NPC (I actually do know his name, but let's pretend I don't) - "Pacha".

Iblis Phase 3 - "Popeye the Sailor of Disaster".

End of the World - "Don't Let the Strobe Lights Go Down On Me".

Erazor Djinn - "Majin Gaston". I also refer to him with such names as Tonic Djinn and Qui-Gon Djinn and other low hanging fruits.

Ifrit - "Fire Flower Scorch". *coughit'saSpyroreferencecough*

MeteorTech Robots - "Xenorillos".

Chronicles' Soundtrack - "A Bit MIDI Today".

Dark Gaia - "Manos". Does he use his hands to make ice sculptures too?

Sonic Free Riders - "The One That Begins At Sea World".

Frigate Orcan - "Neon Cortex Blimp". Because it's like that one from Crash 1, innit. (No, it's not. I'm just being blimp-ist.)

Kirk Thornton's Shadow - "Senorita-Searching Shadow". "Rouge is busy bathing in Majorca, Ssssanic."

I've also dubbed certaing aspects of the Sonic series.

Sonic

Smug Bastard - Term of approval

Mr McAwesome-  Taken at face value has varying degrees of sincerity, but also means 'How Sonic sees himself."(or wants to be)

Eggman

Glorious Bastard - Approval

Sonic 06

The alleged game

That game

Jason's Sonic

The Griffith Inflection

or if I'm describing Jason's very early attempts "The GRIFfith inFLECtion"

Sonic's car (all stars racing)

The mid-life crisis

Hopefully it continues to die down. I get tired of that mentality that all sonic fans are just weirdo's or immature people that have nothing in their lives at all but to be strange and a bunch of idiots. I haven't heard as much lately as I used to, but usually its around the time a new game is released that all these people that want to bash sonic fans all reappear. Anytime there is Sega or Sonic news on major websites, all that does is stir the haters up again.

Sonic is one of the very few things that I have constantly followed ever since the first game was released. Yet, even back then I never felt well talking about anything Sonic that went beyond the games. It seemed too silly... other games or tv shows didn't have that effect on me and I have no idea why that is.

Nowadays I rather carefully pick the people to talk about me being a Sonic fan with. Firstly, because there are a lot of Sonic related products that I don't immediately want to be associated with (because they're not what I support or am specifically interested in), and secondly, because there are actually some very peculiar people among the fanbase that I don't want to be related to.

Actually, I consider myself to be a very relaxed fan of Sonic things. I don't mind the changes they make to the games, as long the result is a product that is fun and can compete. I don't mind spin-offs like comics, tv shows, fan fiction and fanart of all kinds and like that it exists. And I couldn't care less about people being furries and/or the Sonic-related things they do in private...

But some of the bad examples just stick out so much, get so much attention; the thought of being associated with any of that before everything else is something I prefer to avoid.

When I first got Sonic Rush, at Christmas in about 07/08, I cleared Leaf Storm with ease but when it came to the boss, I managed to avoid all Eggman's attacks, but I didn't know I had to hit the mech on the flashing glass. I only found out after my big sister, who does not play videogames at all. Teh shame...

I must be the only one whose never had any direct verbal assaults afflicted upon them for being a Sonic fan.  Most people I've talked to simply don't care one way or the other.  With that said, I feel no need to hide my interest in the fandom, since anyone who would belittle me for such a silly thing is ultimately just a troll or a lonely, miserable twit anyway.

Oh, forgot to mention a few other ones. Other names/phrases that I use include The Duke of Soleanna - "King Harkinian", End of the World Spheres - "Death Testicles", Imperator Ix - "Mr. Mouthbeard", and '06 Knuckles - "Nuhculls!" (Because of the slightly odd way Sonic says his name in Flame Core.)

There's also Mephiles the Dark - "Fucking Imbecile", but you knew that already. Oh, and Mephileslie I guess.

Believe me, you aren't the only one that has ever had bad things said about them about being a fan. However, I don't think its been anyone in person, it was of course people on the internet that don't know me or see me for themselves. People can hide online, so they feel more brave about confronting people with hate comments. In person, most people don't even seem to care, or they end up complimenting my sonic tshirts that they think look nice.

Oh right, I did, sorry. My bad XD Believe me, I don't hide it either if I can, since most of my wardrobe are all sonic tshirts for when I'm out and about.

I've had the exact opposite at my boarding school. I was called the Sonic spastic for some time by the "cool kids", which is really annoying because they're almost all douchebags who aren't in any way "cool", but they gain popularity by being good at sports and being assholes. Being funny is good, but it really gets me how people---Never mind, this isn't a thread for me to vent my bullying related frustration. Anyway, I would talk about the barrel, but that's not really shameful.

This is a topic over in the personal section if you wish to tell people about this even further. The whole deal with the cool kids in jr high and high school really is a bunch of crap usually. Their defintion of cool is their own, and they are simply using intemidation and fear of embarrasement for others to keep themselves in power. I'm glad most of this all goes away in college, since often times the things that were uncool in jr high and high school are now all cool again because the people have matured.

This is often why people feel some of the things related to Sonic are shameful, because these bullies try and make us feel that its a shameful thing when it isn't. As I said in another topic, everyone's definition of normal is different. To us, being a sonic fan is normal and to others it isn't. Its the same with really any interest there is out there. What one person sees as normal is not what another sees as normal, but neither is right or wrong.

Noted.

Yeah...I used to call rings "coins". Like I used to call Wumpa Fruit "Apples".

still call rings coins. I know they're not, but I'm just so used to saying coins. They serve nearly the same purpose, anyway.

Well I think alot of people call collectables both coins and gold for the most part when the are young, since they are often the main two types of collectables in many games. Rings are definately different and in alot of cases in the more modern games, where the rings are actually being used as a currency in game.

I've made many OCs in my time... Some of them stupid but forgivable due to my age (A hyperactive classic Sonic in a bowtie named Max,) Some of them just blatant self inserts, Some of them parodies of fan characters...

Then there's Darkness the Hedgehog, a green colored villain-sue hedgehog with a robot arm, a cape and a scar across his eye.

...

When I rediscovered this, I began kicking myself for conceiving such a monstrosity.

Also, there was once a time where I was actually on the hype train for Sonic 06. However, we all know the trainwreck that ensued once the game was released... And there I was, riding the wreckage of what was left of the hype train, assuring myself that it was alright and everyone was just being overdramatic... Hell, I had a character in one of my comics who would not shut up about how Sonic 06 was a good game...

All this coming from someone who didn't (and still hasn't) played the game yet. ph34r.png

And from what I've seen, I don't really plan on doing so anytime in the future.

Don't worry, I think we all go through that OC phase right when we start. Our OC's improve with time and we often fix them to be more original than they are at first. I know mine were alot more unoriginal than they are now. I know they may not be perfect, but I believe at least that they are better than they used to be. Most people I knew had OC's like this right when they started in the fandom.

Come now, liking a popular franchise is nothing to be ashamed of. People of all ages like Sonic, notice how there's a ton of adults running and contributing to this site that are huge fans of Sonic. Trust me, keeping secrets won't help anything. If people make fun of you for liking Sonic if you eventually tell the truth, then whatever. It's their loss if they can't truly comprehend what Sonic really is and why it's so awesome.

I think keeping something as silly as liking Sonic a secret should is a bit shameful in and of itself.

Well, I've mentioned this in relation to a few other things here and there, but I suppose it should count as it's own entry... I've never been that bothered about stories in Sonic games all that much.

Wait. Let me finish.

I'm not saying I outright demand that every single game is just a repeat of Sonic 1 or anything, I only said I'm not that bothered about it. In other words, I'm indifferent. If there is a big story, and it's good (and if it's something I can get interested in, obviously laugh.png), then great, fantastic, all the better, I'm not going to argue with that. But if it's more "minimal", that's fine with me too, you know? As long as there's a product I'm having fun with either way (and the characters are at least reasonably in-character), it's all good with me.

Now I know this might seem like the king of "Why is this something that you consider shameful?" posts, and... well, as par for the course with oneself, I can't help but feel a little guilty for my opinion. Because many folk here do like their Sonic games to have plenty of story. That might not be the case with other forums... but I don't go to other forums (anymore). I only go here. And here, that seems to be the general viewpoint. So you'll be seeing plenty of comments like "I hope *such and such* has grand storytelling" and "*such and such* better have rich characterisation" and so on... and then there's me in the corner, going "Eh, I'm alright."

So as a result, I feel like I'm letting everyone else down because of my more indifferent tastes. It's another reason why I keep getting paranoid about others thinking of me as "easily pleased" or "having low standards", or worst of all... "a sheeple". sad.png

I'm sort of the same way.  The only stories I've ever had a serious problem with were ShTH and Sonic '06.  The others have a great deal of narrative flaws and leave a lot to be desired, but I never turn the game off, feeling like I wasted my time.  I enjoy them for what they are, but I'm more than open to discussing what they could be as well. ^^;

No I agree; I'm much more relaxed about the subject too. I just don't know how to express it because of the reasons you stated at the end of your post. That's why I rarely ever comment about it here or elsewhere (unless I really have to) because I'm just indifferent to it and I can't really come up with well-opinionated posts about it. Except for 2006's of course.

Well you couldn't skip cutscenes in Shadow so you were forced to watch the shitty story unfold. Sonic 06 is being too pretentious and takes it's self way to seriously.

When the Egg Carrier crashed, Sonic should have left it as is. He created a good future with no Eggman or Elise.
