Best first level ever?

The best first level from every Sonic game out now for me I'd say its Emerald Coast from Sonic Adventure. That beach-ish rock music is just too good, its a great entrance to show off how awesome the whole game's gonna be.

I absolutely LOVE Emerald coast, and SA1 has one of the best soundtracks in the whole series. However, if you asked me, I would have to give the title of best opening level to the og green hill zone. This level perfectly nailed what Sonic was supposed to be with his first installment. And the level design forms many branching paths, the lower areas having spike traps that slow down newer players, and the higher areas having falling platforms that you can outrun. It perfectly meshes with the momentum based physics engine. And the aesthetic of ghz is so unique compared to the other platforms of it’s time. I just wish they’d quit ramrodding ghz into every Sonic game. Forces didn’t need it, Frontiers didn’t need it. Superstars didn’t need it (even if it’s just for the battle mode)

Not to knock emerald coast. It was a beautiful first zone to kick off a new era of Sonic.

City Escape

It has awesome music, it has cool set pieces, it's the perfect level to teach you about some of the game's mechanics, especially regarding Trick Ramps and Rail Grinding, and the ending chase sequence is hectic but fun.
