SEGA announced today that Gamecube classics Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle will be heading to the Japanese Steam store in 2024.

2023-japansa12steam.jpeg

The announcement was made online this morning as part of SEGA Japan's official pan-Asian Sonic fan meeting series, and was revealed to long-suffering Japanese Steam players during the Osaka leg of the tour.

Fans outside Japan might be surprised to hear about this news, because Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 (and their DX/Battle DLC expansions) have both been available on Western Steam platforms for over a decade at this point. It's a little mind-blowing that neither game had hit the store in Japan since then.

But it's worth remembering that, historically, PC gaming has been an incredibly niche market in Japan - certainly much, much smaller than in the West. Over the last few years, there has been a growing effort from Japanese publishers to explore the PC market and many have released titles on Steam in the country alongside consoles. This announcement would seem to be SEGA Japan's way of catching up to the offering that Western fans already enjoy.

In any case, it's great news for Sonic fans in Japan and Asia. Seems a little strange to wait until 2024 for them but hey, they've been waiting some 11 years already, what's another couple of months?

Ah, I didn't actually know this. It explains something I've been confused about for a while now. I hope more Japanese studios move to PC gaming.

Really surprising to hear PC gaming was more of a niche thing in Japan, makes me wonder what versions of these games tend to be played over there.

Sonic Adventure DX is actually quite malleable, you just need to familiarize yourself with the tools.

Sonic Adventure 2 less so because no one ever fully figured out the character model format, I believe. It also uses different models for the cutscenes, which interferes in consistent modding.

Adventure 2 has had ingame model swaps figured out for years. Cutscene modding is progressing, if I recall.

Hell, phones today are more powerful than the consoles back then. The Dreamcast is basically a toaster compared to an Android or an IPhone.

Nah bro vanilla DX and SA2 are nice. I never played using mods...

...which's probably why my opinion is invalid, as in "well if you used them just once you'd never go back to vanilla"

Some phones so powerful can even play Sonic Unleashed, if PS3/360 emulation on android becomes real

Scratch that you can play Sonic Unleashed RIGHT NOW on your phone... the PS2/Wii version that is lol
