Did you know that Sonic the Hedgehog started life as a video game? Oh, you did. Well look, right, it's easy to mistake him for a movie star, comics superhero, merchandise fashionista and all the rest of it - but it's just as well that the video games are great too. Sonic Superstars

Sonic's latest outing is an absolute banger. Your blue hero goes back to classic 2D, in a new adventure that lets you run through the colourful landscapes of the North Star Islands as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy - either solo or all at once in casual co-op multiplayer! We raved about the franchise's return to thoughtful platforming action, addictive gameplay loop and significant-but-rewarding challenge in our review - and we know what we're talking about, so let that be a reason to pick up a copy.

COLLECTOR'S CHOICE: Sonic Superstars Special Edition (Korea)

A special release of the game only made available at Korean retailers, but the PS5 version can be imported via the Amazon JP link below. Includes the game, a 3.1" figurine, a 5.9"x4.1" acrylic stand and a 6.7"x8.3" reproduction print featuring Takashi Iizuka and Naoto Ohshima's signatures.

Sonic Origins Plus

Run through the blue blur's original 16-bit adventures in this adorable package that aims to honour the series' platforming roots. You've played Sonic 1, 2 and CD countless times before, but not like this - Origins Plus does the service of bringing console players Christian Whitehead's remastered versions of these titles for the first time. And there's a newly-remastered version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles to boot, courtesy of Sonic Mania developer Headcannon. Chuck in a playable Amy Rose in all games, Knuckles in Sonic CD, mission modes, an unlockable gallery and the entire library of 8-bit Game Gear Sonic games, and you have yourself a rather exhaustive compilation of Sonic's early years. We loved it (read our review here), but after a number of patches and updates, it's even better today!

Sonic Frontiers

Sonic Team's big comeback project was 2022's Sonic Frontiers, and after five years of development the studio succeeded in providing a truly fresh new take on 3D Sonic action. Lost and without much direction, Sonic is tasked with exploring the vast lands of the Starfall Islands in a desperate attempt to rescue his friends who are trapped in a cyberspace limbo. It's a game that lets the player choose where and how they tackle the story, with "open zone" challenges, new combat scenarios and traditional linear platforming stages all offering a means to progress. It's a beloved title by many Sonic fans for its story and characterisation, and we thought it was pretty good upon release, but a wave of free DLC expansions over the last year have only enhanced the game. If you've not jumped in yet, now is the perfect time.

While we were all waiting for Sonic Frontiers to come out, SEGA and Paramount Pictures had entertained the world twice over with two magnificent theatrical adventures of everyone's favourite blue hedgehog! Starring James Marsden and Jim Carrey, and featuring the voice of Ben Schwartz as Sonic, these movies take the blue blur across the world - and across dimensions - to save Earth from the ever-increasing threat of Dr. Robotnik. The first movie is great to watch with the family, but it's the second that fans will admire for the added character cast and fun references to past Sonic games.

It's almost criminal that the physical CD releases of Sonic the Hedgehog soundtracks are limited to Japan, but you don't have to miss out! IDW Sonic Comics

One of the great ways to enjoy Sonic the Hedgehog content is with the fantastic comic book adaptation from IDW Publishing. The series has been running since 2018 and has taken the blue blur and friends on a huge number of cool and interesting adventures. From battling metal viruses, to dealing with the mysterious Doctor Starline and more, the book has also introduced a slew of awesome new characters such as Surge the Tenrec, Tangle and Whisper. We've included the first three mega-compilations as a gift recommendation, alongside one of our favourite arcs: Scrapnik Island. Finally, if you just want to look at the incredible comic art the Sonic book has produced, we've included a recommendation of the official art book too.

If a little bit of face-to-face family time is what you're after, you can put down the video game controller and pick up a board game piece as you can also enjoy Sonic the Hedgehog in tabletop form! We recommend this recently-released game from KHADOU, in which players have to navigate the board in search for the elusive Chaos Emeralds. In this race against time, you also have to be careful of Dr. Eggman's nasty traps and robots, which can put you out of commission! Fun for 2-4 players, ages 8+.

Gaming can be a messy business. We get it. You should look at our desks every so often (actually, please don't do that). Power Idolz Sonic the Hedgehog Wireless Charging Dock

OK, this thing might be super useful and handy, but we also think it just looks too silly to NOT include in our roundup. Whatever genius thought of taking a model of Sonic, ripping out his upper torso and replacing it with a game cartridge - all in the name of having a charging portal on which to stand your phone - should really get a raise. The back of the figure also has an accurate reprinting of the original Sonic 1 Mega Drive box blurb too. You're probably not a REAL Sonic fan unless you have one of these. Probably. It's on sale as well for the holidays, so no reason not to get one.

Sonic Adventure Official PVC Statue

This brand new statue from First4Figures is sure to hit all the right nostalgia nerves - a model of the iconic pose and logo from Dreamcast classic, Sonic Adventure. Those of us who grew up with Sega's last home console will fondly remember Christmas days playing through Sonic's first mainline 3D outing, and absorbing all of the vibrant colours, wonderful level design and engaging storyline. Take yourself back to 1999 with one of two versions of this PVC statue; either the Standard Edition or a Collector's version that comes with a light-up base.
