Check Out This Concept Artwork for Sonic Superstars' Lagoon City

SEGA has shared a new piece of concept artwork for Sonic Superstars, focusing on a new stage titled "Lagoon City".

2023-lagoon-superstars.jpeg

According to the social media post, players will be able to "swim, splash and spin [their] way through different paths." It certainly looks incredibly complex, and a real throwback to the classic 16-bit days where Sonic could take a number of routes to reach the goal.

We also really like the art style here - although we're not sure if the concept art will completely reflect the final product, we do like the kind of Seaside Hill / Sky Sanctuary vibes that the landscape is giving off.

What do you think of this new artwork? Let us know in the comments section below.

  • The title was changed to Artwork for Lagoon City from Sonic Superstars released

Well, while I like how this level looks in the concept art, I honestly wish they'd do an actual under-the-sea stage with coral and all instead of another watery ruins level.

Oh cool idea! But Sonic won't agree to play those levels:chuckle:

I mean they kinda sorta did that with Aquarium Park in some sections. I do think the concept would be really cool as a full level tho. Maybe if it took inspiration from Adabat/the Caribbean or something.

I think game informer Said in one interview that act 2 was completely underwater. I may be wrong though.

Yeah, though I can SEA the possibilities with such a level. It would be an O-Sin to not do a full on under-the-sea level.

...Yeah, I see the door to my left.

Coral Cave hit that undersea vibe pretty well too. I think aquarium park was the goat tho.

Lagoon City kinda strikes me as an abandoned, overgrown Water Palace. Need more fast paced water stages so this looks great to me.

For Water zones...you will not top Hydrocity from sonic 3 / Mania. Enough water to be intetesting, enough speed to keep it "Sonic".

Saying that, this does look interesting with the chemical plant type tubes

You know, considering what I said about wanting an under-the-sea level in Sonic games...

I would love to see Sonic try to outrun a giant, non-robotic shark while underwater.

It's concept art of a segment of the level that may only last a few seconds. Heck we don't even know if this section is in the game.

This looks cute to me. Anyway, as other people have already said, it would be interesting to see an actual under-water level for once. Maybe shields could come in help to make that work properly. Of course, without the boost (like in Sonic Rush / Rush Adventure or Sonic Colours), they should find a way to guarantee speed even under-water, but I think good game designers could solve that in an appropriate manner.

by that logic, Chemical Plant is also automation (it isn't). most of the gimmicks on display here don't seem very automated to me aside from maybe the big tubes. it also doesn't hurt to mention that this is concept art and is in no way reflective of what the final product will look like.

No lmao. Clearly not even close to what this appears to be, which is 100% automated level design. But you all can keep on that hopium copium 💀 happens with every game. The Sonic Cycle

The only things that look "automated" (as in, require little to no input to traverse) are the clear tubes and maybe the water slides. And believe it or not, BOTH of those things are present in the OG Genesis games (and are both automated in the classics too! imagine that)!

Your entire argument here falls flat solely because this is literally CONCEPT ART. Concept art SPECIFICALLY for some of the gimmicks in Lagoon City.

You know just as much as everybody else about the actual in-game level design, which is to say, nothing at all. Seems to me you're only here to shit on things you have no awareness of. Get over yourself, dude.

Only going to give one warning here to axe these pointless posts before I just start taking actions. You're not adding anything to the discussion other than some weak taunting.

It's gd concept art y'all. It's never the end all be all for what a level will play like; whether it'll be automated or not. Shit has always been mainly for getting a visual standing for the level. Trying to claim otherwise is some next level jumping the gun
